Stimulation Of Electro-Olfactogram Responses In The Main Olfactory Epithelia By Airflow Depends On The Type 3 Adenylyl Cyclase, Xuanmao Chen, Zhengui Xia, Daniel R. Storm Nov 2012

Stimulation Of Electro-Olfactogram Responses In The Main Olfactory Epithelia By Airflow Depends On The Type 3 Adenylyl Cyclase, Xuanmao Chen, Zhengui Xia, Daniel R. Storm

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

Cilia of olfactory sensory neurons are the primary sensory organelles for olfaction. The detection of odorants by the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) depends on coupling of odorant receptors to the type 3 adenylyl cyclase (AC3) in olfactory cilia. We monitored the effect of airflow on electro-olfactogram (EOG) responses and found that the MOE of mice can sense mechanical forces generated by airflow. The airflow-sensitive EOG response in the MOE was attenuated when cAMP was increased by odorants or by forskolin suggesting a common mechanism for airflow and odorant detection. In addition, the sensitivity to airflow was significantly impaired in the …

Breast cancers expressing human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-associated genes are more likely to progress than well-differentiated cancers and are thus associated with poor patient prognosis. Elevated proliferation and evasion of growth control are similarly associated with disease progression, and are classical hallmarks of cancer. In the current study we demonstrate that the hESC-associated factor Nodal promotes breast cancer growth. Specifically, we show that Nodal is elevated in aggressive MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-468 and Hs578t human breast cancer cell lines, compared to poorly aggressive MCF-7 and T47D breast cancer cell lines. Nodal knockdown in aggressive breast cancer cells via shRNA reduces tumour incidence …

Characterization Of Microflora In Latin-Style Cheeses By Next-Generation Sequencing Technology, Tina S. Lusk, Andrea R. Ottesen, James R. White, Marc W. Allard, Eric W. Brown, Julie A. Kase Nov 2012

Characterization Of Microflora In Latin-Style Cheeses By Next-Generation Sequencing Technology, Tina S. Lusk, Andrea R. Ottesen, James R. White, Marc W. Allard, Eric W. Brown, Julie A. Kase

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Background

Cheese contamination can occur at numerous stages in the manufacturing process including the use of improperly pasteurized or raw milk. Of concern is the potential contamination by Listeria monocytogenes and other pathogenic bacteria that find the high moisture levels and moderate pH of popular Latin-style cheeses like queso fresco a hospitable environment. In the investigation of a foodborne outbreak, samples typically undergo enrichment in broth for 24 hours followed by selective agar plating to isolate bacterial colonies for confirmatory testing. The broth enrichment step may also enable background microflora to proliferate, which can confound subsequent analysis if not inhibited …

Rivers Of Truth, Shores Of Myth And The Land Between: The Dawning Of Silvia Sunshine Upon Florida’S Frontier, An Annotated Diary, Dara R. Vance

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

Traveling independently as a published author and a lady of stature, Abbie M. Brooks exceeded the boundaries placed around women in America’s Gilded Age. From 1872 through 1876, Brooks faithfully recorded her adventures as she traveled throughout Florida, Georgia and Cuba. The four years of nearly daily entries she wrote enable the reader to witness the emergence of Brooks nom d’ plume Silvia Sunshine as an opinionated and authoritative guide. The diary entries and travel notations were compiled into the Florida guidebook Petals Plucked from Sunny Climes, published in 1880. During the course of the diary Brooks attributed her own …

Risk Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Arc Therapy For Prostate Cancer, Laura A. Rechner, Rebecca M. Howell, Rui Zhang, Carol Etzel, Andrew K. Lee, Wayne D. Newhauser Nov 2012

Risk Of Radiogenic Second Cancers Following Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Arc Therapy For Prostate Cancer, Laura A. Rechner, Rebecca M. Howell, Rui Zhang, Carol Etzel, Andrew K. Lee, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

Prostate cancer patients who undergo radiotherapy are at an increased risk to develop a radiogenic second cancer. Proton therapy has been shown to reduce the predicted risk of second cancer when compared to intensity modulated radiotherapy. However, it is unknown if this is also true for the rotational therapies proton arc therapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). The objective of this study was to compare the predicted risk of cancer following proton arc therapy and VMAT for prostate cancer. Proton arc therapy and VMAT plans were created for three patients. Various risk models were combined with the dosimetric data …

Association Of Intimate Partner Violence And Childhood Sexual Abuse With Cancer-Related Well-Being In Women, Ann L. Coker, Diane R. Follingstad, Lisandra S. Garcia, Corrine M. Williams, Timothy N. Crawford, Heather M. Bush Nov 2012

Association Of Intimate Partner Violence And Childhood Sexual Abuse With Cancer-Related Well-Being In Women, Ann L. Coker, Diane R. Follingstad, Lisandra S. Garcia, Corrine M. Williams, Timothy N. Crawford, Heather M. Bush

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence suggests that intimate partner violence (IPV) may be associated with poorer cancer outcomes. We hypothesized that timing and type of IPV as well as childhood sexual abuse (CSA) may negatively affect depression, perceived stress, and cancer-related well-being.

METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of women diagnosed with either breast, cervical, or colorectal cancer in the prior 12 months included in the Kentucky Cancer Registry. Consenting women were interviewed by phone (n=553). Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to determine the association between IPV (37% lifetime prevalence) and type, timing, and the range of correlated cancer-related well-being …
