Civil Society Organizations And Policy Process In Tajikistan, Andrew I.E. Ewoh, Favziya Nazarova, Rhonda N. Hill

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This analysis examines the role of civil society organizations in the public policy process in Tajikistan. It begins with an examination of the emergence of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Tajikistan as a consequence of the government’s failure to address citizens’ needs, and its impact in resolving the socially significant problems in the post-conflict Tajikistan. This is followed by an exploration of the current political situation and the contextual policy environment in which CSOs must operate in order to exist. The article concludes that despite restrictions in their operations, CSOs not only advocate for new policies, they actively participate in …

The Land Acquisition, Resettlement And Rehabilitation (Larr) Bill 2011: Providing Solutions Or Raising Questions?, Amitendu Palit

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

The Land Acquisition Act (LAA) of 1894 empowers the Indian state to exercise eminent domain for acquiring private land in ‘public purpose’. During the last few years, India has witnessed raging debates on whether the state is justified in acquiring land for use and development by industry. The Government has sought to address various concerns raised in this regard through the Land Acquisition, Resettlement & Rehabilitation (LARR) Bill of 2011, which seeks to replace the LAA. Several provisions in the Bill are influenced by the recommendations of the National Advisory Council (NAC). This paper examines the LARR Bill for identifying …

Developing Business Acumen In Chinese Business School Graduates, Rajaram Veliyath, Bonnie Stivers, Joe Hair, Teresa Joyce, Marko Sarstedt

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This study assessed the importance of knowledge, skills, abilities (i.e., KSAs) and competencies for managerial success in China’s market economy. Business students at a major Chinese university were surveyed over a five year period, initially in 2001 and later in 2006, five years after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the explained variances in business acumen and social motivation skills were higher after China’s WTO entry. The results were reversed for communication skills. The results confirmed the predictive relevance of entrepreneurial behavior and adaptability in the model. Overall, the results suggest an enhanced …

A Case Study: Impact Of International Liberalization On The Indian Economy, Kishore G. Kulkarni, Shreesh Bhattarai

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This paper, using the Solow growth model looks at the impact of liberalization on India’s economic growth. Additionally, using empirical data, it analyzes the patterns, processes, and characteristics of India’s economic growth. The Solow model explains the long run economic growth via the change in the Solow residuals. This paper defines the Solow residual as International trade. This paper will show that International trade and fewer regulations on exports and imports have ignited high economic growth in India. After the late 1980s, India saw an immense increase in international trade. Led by low tariff rates, India saw a hike in …

P21-Activated Kinase-1 Signaling Regulates Transcription Of Tissue Factor And Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor., Beatriz Sanchez-Solana, Mona Motwani, Da-Qiang Li, Jeyanthy Eswaran, Rakesh Kumar

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Tissue factor (TF) is a cell-surface glycoprotein responsible for initiating the coagulation cascade. Besides its role in homeostasis, studies have shown the implication of TF in embryonic development, cancer related events, and inflammation via coagulation-dependent and -independent (signaling) mechanisms. Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) plays an important role in regulating TF-initiated blood coagulation. Therefore, transcriptional regulation of TF expression and its physiologic inhibitor TFPI, would allow us to understand the critical step that control many different processes. From a gene profiling study aimed to identify differentially regulated genes between wild type (WT) and p21-activated kinase 1-null (PAK1-KO) mouse embryonic fibroblasts …

Economic Impact Of The Ability Of Nebraska Agriculture To Irrigate: The Case Of 2012, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Decision Innovation Solutions

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

With the harsh 2012 growing season behind for Nebraska crop producers, sights are now on the prospects for 2013. An exceptional drought gripped much of the United States from mid-June to the end of the growing season. In many regards, the drought persists in many parts of the country. Without significant moisture accumulations prior to spring planting 2013, drought conditions may continue into next year’s growing season. Since the drought of 2012 became a cause of concern in mid-2012, there have been discussions regarding ways to limit the use of water for agricultural purposes. Many of these discussions will result …

Novel Strategies To Improve Metabolic Parameters And Precondition Diabetic Hearts Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury, Amit Varma Nov 2012

Novel Strategies To Improve Metabolic Parameters And Precondition Diabetic Hearts Against Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury, Amit Varma

Theses and Dissertations

Insulin resistance and chronic hyperglycemia promote vascular damage, increase circulating levels of inflammatory cytokines and lead to increased morbidity and mortality. MicroRNAs (miRs) -103/107 have been shown to negatively regulate insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis. Based on complimentary binding profiles, the downstream target gene of miR-103/107 is caveolin-1 (Cav-1). We hypothesized that daily administration of the phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor tadalafil (TAD) ± the curcumin analogue (HO-3867) will attenuate inflammation, improve metabolic parameters and reduce infarct size after ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Furthermore, we propose that TAD therapy will reduce myocardial expression of miR-103/107 and increase mRNA and protein levels of its target …

Mindfulness-Based Stretching And Deep Breathing Exercises Normalize Serum Cortisol Levels And Reverse Symptoms Of Ptsd: A Prospective Randomized-Controlled Trial, Sang Hwan Kim Nov 2012

Mindfulness-Based Stretching And Deep Breathing Exercises Normalize Serum Cortisol Levels And Reverse Symptoms Of Ptsd: A Prospective Randomized-Controlled Trial, Sang Hwan Kim

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Context: Cortisol, the human glucocorticoid, plays a key role in the pathophysiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is known that individuals with chronic PTSD suffer from low basal cortisol levels. Endogenic normalization of basal cortisol concentration through exercise may have a therapeutic effect on treating PTSD symptoms, yet little is known about the association between exercise-induced endogenic increase of cortisol and PTSD symptom reduction. Objective: To identify whether mindfulness-based stretching and deep breathing exercise (MBX) increases basal cortisol levels, examine if MBX reduces PTSD symptom severity, and evaluate MBX as a complementary intervention for PTSD. Design: Prospective, randomized, controlled. …

Family Environment And School Environment As Predictors For Physical Aggression In Low-Income Children, Xiaoyu Li Nov 2012

Family Environment And School Environment As Predictors For Physical Aggression In Low-Income Children, Xiaoyu Li

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of the current study was to examine the unique and collective contributions of child’s own characteristics, their family environment and school environment to the development of child physical aggression at Grade 5. This study was based on Bronfenbrenner’s Process-Person-Context-Time model (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2006). Children’s gender and their aggression at age 3 were included as person characteristics. Family environment (primary caregiver’s ethnicity, maternal education, home warmth, physical punishment, exposure to violence, family conflict, and parent-child dysfunctional interaction) and early child care experience measured by whether the child was in child care at both age 3 and age 4 …
