We've Been Here Before: Meeting The Needs Of Student-Veterans, Denise L. Davidson

New York Journal of Student Affairs

Using the 1944 work of E. G. Williamson, then president of ACPA, this essay provides historical and comparative analysis of campus efforts surrounding student-veterans. Emphasis is placed on Williamson’s five efforts, which alerted colleges to the immediate needs of veterans returning from the Second World War and enrolling in college. The current work applies Williamson’s five efforts to contemporary higher education and the military students enrolled therein. Recommendations for practice are offered.

Mixed Method Collaboration In The Built Environment, Dermot Kehily Nov 2012

Mixed Method Collaboration In The Built Environment, Dermot Kehily

Conference papers

The built environment discipline or inter-discipline is a relatively new field in academic research. Its subject matter however is based on the traditional disciplines of the construction and property industries. Determining your ontological position and epistemological approach based on the researchparadigm of one of these fields’ may not provide an adequate solution to your research objectives. This paper outlines that framing your research within the broader confines of the built environment; drawing from related fields in an integrated manner may provide a more successful outcome.Arguments whether the built environment is an academic discipline or even the range of subjects thatmake up …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The incidence of overweight and obesity has become a major public health concern in the United States. The college years are a time during which many dietary and physical activity habits are formed. Health professionals on college campuses have the ability to reach large numbers of people and provide nutrition education to help reduce the rising rates of obesity. The purpose of this study is to examine the body mass index (BMI) trends of college students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, between the years 2007-2011 and to determine the nutrition-related goals of these students. Data was previously collected from NUTR …

Effect Of Six Weeks Of Oral Echinacea Purpurea Supplementation On Nitric Oxide Production, Tyler D. Martin, Michael S. Green, Malcolm T. Whitehead, Timothy P. Scheett, Michael J. Webster, Geoffrey M. Hudson Nov 2012

Effect Of Six Weeks Of Oral Echinacea Purpurea Supplementation On Nitric Oxide Production, Tyler D. Martin, Michael S. Green, Malcolm T. Whitehead, Timothy P. Scheett, Michael J. Webster, Geoffrey M. Hudson

Faculty Publications

Echinacea purpurea, a purple coneflower plant of the compositae family (Asteraceae), is native to North America and commonly used as an herbal supplement to enhance immune function. Echinacea purpurea has been shown to stimulate macrophage activity which is a known stimulator of nitric oxide (NO) production. Echinacea purpurea supplementation (8,000 mg·d-1) in untrained (42.5 ± 1.6 mL·kg-1·min-1) males was shown to elicit a 63% increase (p < 0.05) in serum erythropoietin (EPO) following two weeks of supplementation. This is supported in part by earlier findings which indicated that four weeks of Echinacea purpurea supplementation demonstrated a non-significant increase in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). It is plausible that Echinacea-induced EPO production may stimulate physiological responses independent of …

Metabolic Syndrome And Migraine., Amit Sachdev, Michael J Marmura Nov 2012

Metabolic Syndrome And Migraine., Amit Sachdev, Michael J Marmura

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Migraine and metabolic syndrome are highly prevalent and costly conditions. The two conditions coexist, but it is unclear what relationship may exist between the two processes. Metabolic syndrome involves a number of findings, including insulin resistance, systemic hypertension, obesity, a proinflammatory state, and a prothrombotic state. Only one study addresses migraine in metabolic syndrome, finding significant differences in the presentation of metabolic syndrome in migraineurs. However, controversy exists regarding the contribution of each individual risk factor to migraine pathogenesis and prevalence. It is unclear what treatment implications, if any, exist as a result of the concomitant diagnosis of migraine and …

The Development Of A Dyadic Assessment For Families Experiencing, Sarah Cline Nov 2012

The Development Of A Dyadic Assessment For Families Experiencing, Sarah Cline

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a chronic disease involving curvature of the spine that is typically diagnosed in late childhood and early adolescence. The timing of most AIS diagnoses and subsequent treatment occur at a critical point developmentally and may place strain on the parent-adolescent relationship. The present study developed a measure, The AIS Dyadic Assessment, of the parent-adolescent relationship affected by AIS. This measure assessed three aspects of the parent-adolescent relationship: Communication Skills, Emotion Regulation, and Mutual Agreement about AIS. Twenty-six female adolescents who were currently prescribed a brace as part of their AIS treatment, and their mothers, participated. …

Transcription And Analysis Of Qualitative Data In A Study Of Women Who Sexually Offended Against Children, Elizabeth Anne Mcnulty Nov 2012

Transcription And Analysis Of Qualitative Data In A Study Of Women Who Sexually Offended Against Children, Elizabeth Anne Mcnulty

The Qualitative Report

Research on sexual violence is often conducted within the qualitative paradigm. However, many writers have described the lack of specific detail provided with regard to decisions and processes involved in transcribing and analyzing this type of data. In this article, I will provide a description and discussion of the organization, categorization, and analysis of in-depth interviews in a recent study of women who sexually abused children. The study revealed common experiences of sexual and other abuse in the women’s childhood and adult relationships. These experiences created vulnerabilities that appeared to play a significant role in the women’s offenses. Although abused …
