Congenital Thoracic Scoliosis Presenting As Torticollis: A Casereport, Tzu-Yi Chou, Pei-Yu Yang, Nai-Hsin Meng Dec 2012

Congenital Thoracic Scoliosis Presenting As Torticollis: A Casereport, Tzu-Yi Chou, Pei-Yu Yang, Nai-Hsin Meng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Torticollis is a manifestation of various underlying conditions that refers to a specific positioning of the neck, such that the head is tilted to one side with the chin turned toward the opposite direction. Torticollis can be classified into muscular and non-muscular types. Congenital thoracic scoliosis is a rare cause of non-muscular torticollis. We report the case of an eight-month-old female infant presenting with persistent torticollis at birth. The initial impression was muscular torticollis. However, her symptom persisted after rehabilitation. After a series of surveys, congenital thoracic scoliosis, a very rare cause of non-muscular torticollis, was diagnosed. Most cases of …

Sonographic Features Of Eosinophilic Fasciitis With Asymmetrical Symptoms: A Casereport, Yan-Hao Chen, Huey-Wen Liang, Tyng-Guey Wang Dec 2012

Sonographic Features Of Eosinophilic Fasciitis With Asymmetrical Symptoms: A Casereport, Yan-Hao Chen, Huey-Wen Liang, Tyng-Guey Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare rheumatological disorder, with the clinical presentations of myalgia, symmetrical skin induration, and peripheral eosinophilia. Because of overlapping symptoms with other rheumatological disorders, early diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis is difficult. The confirmatory diagnosis relies on full-thickness skin biopsy. Imaging studies are also used for evaluation and diagnosis. Among them, high-resolution sonography has the advantage of high accessibility over other imaging modalities in detecting musculoskeletal disorder, but the sonographic features of eosinophilic fasciitis are rarely reported. This study reported a 24-year-old woman who was diagnosed as eosinophilic fasciitis with rare presentation of asymmetric involvement. She had left …

Cerebral Stroke And Spinal Infarction After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft: A Casereport, Chun-Sheng Hsu, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Hsi-Hsun Su, Shu-Chuan Wu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Cerebral stroke and spinal cord infarction are rare complications after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). The coexistence of them in one case is extremely rare. Cerebral microemboli generated during CABG is connected to acute ischemic stroke. Spinal cord infarction after CABG is related to hypoperfusion of the spinal cord. Except for the cardiovascular disease, the use of cardiopulmonary bypass during or after surgery is also a risk factor for both of the complications. They are not only increase the length of hospital stay but also contribute to patient's poor prognosis. We reported a 61-year-old male, with histories of hypertension, type II …

Clinical Application Of Evoked Potentials And Pedicle Screw Stimulation During Correction Of Severe Scoliosis: A Casereport, Hung-Wen Chen, Chi-Kuang Feng, Jan-Wei Chiu, Chih-Jou Lai, Rai-Chi Chan, Tsui-Fen Yang Dec 2012

Clinical Application Of Evoked Potentials And Pedicle Screw Stimulation During Correction Of Severe Scoliosis: A Casereport, Hung-Wen Chen, Chi-Kuang Feng, Jan-Wei Chiu, Chih-Jou Lai, Rai-Chi Chan, Tsui-Fen Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Surgical intervention is frequently suggested for scoliosis patients who have a Cobb's angle of more than 50 degrees and who are not responding to conservative treatment such as bracing. In addition, surgical intervention prevents further deterioration of spinal curvature, preserves cardiopulmonary function, provides cosmetic benefits, and improves quality of life for patients. Although the goal of surgical intervention is to improve the balance and function of the spine, iatrogenic spinal cord and nerve injury remains a major concern. Certain instruments are useful in preventing this type of iatrogenic injury. A combination of somatosensory-evoked potentials, motor-evoked potentials, and pedicle screw stimulation …

A Ruptured Baker's Cyst Mimicking Deep Vein Thrombosis In A Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Casereport, Ting-Chun Chou, Chung-Liang Lai, Ming-Miau Tsai, Chuan-Chin Leu, Szu-Li Tsai Dec 2012

A Ruptured Baker's Cyst Mimicking Deep Vein Thrombosis In A Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Casereport, Ting-Chun Chou, Chung-Liang Lai, Ming-Miau Tsai, Chuan-Chin Leu, Szu-Li Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Baker's cysts arise from a distension of a gastrocnemio-semimembranosus bursa, which are often associated with knee pathology including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory arthropathies. Clinical presentations of Baker's cysts are posterior knee swelling, tightness, and pain. Knee joint aspiration and intra-articular corticosteroid injection can relieve symptoms. However, treating underlying diseases is more important for recurrence prevention. Cyst rupture is a complication of Baker's cysts and may induce leg swelling and pain mimicking deep vein thrombosis. It is difficult to distinguish between a ruptured Baker's cyst and deep vein thrombosis because of similar symptoms. If a ruptured Baker's cyst is …

The Correlation Of Lumbar Spine Flexibility And Lumbar Extensor Activity In Healthy Adults, Chung-Che Lin, Ta-Sen Wei, Pen-Ta Liu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The modified fingertip-to-floor method is one of the clinical measurements used to assess forward bending. The present research is based on recording the measurements obtained by lumbar extensor surface electromyography (EMG) during the modified ”fingertip-to-floor” method in order to investigate the correlation between the two approaches. Our hypothesis is that poorer flexibility of the low back is associated with larger amplitude of low back extensor surface EMG activity.Measurements were obtained from 36 subjects (12 male and 24 female aged 28.9±5.3 year-old). The subjects stood on a wooden box and bent forward so that measurements could be taken. The top of …

Status Configurations, Military Service And Higher Education, Lin Wang, Glen H. Elder, Naomi J. Spence

Publications and Research

The U.S. Armed Forces offer educational and training benefits as incentives for service. This study investigates the influence of status configurations on military enlistment and their link to greater educational opportunity. Three statuses (socioeconomic status of origin, cognitive ability and academic performance) have particular relevance for life course options. We hypothesize that young men with inconsistent statuses are more likely to enlist than men with consistent status profiles, and that military service improves access to college for certain configurations. Analyses of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) show (1. that several status configurations markedly increased the likelihood …

A Study On Implementation Of Co2 Abatement Solutions For Existing Ships, Young C. Kwon Dec 2012

A Study On Implementation Of Co2 Abatement Solutions For Existing Ships, Young C. Kwon

World Maritime University Dissertations

Recent high fuel prices and global economic recessions have driven shipowners to turn their attention to saving operational costs of their ships. For this reason, a variety of energy saving solutions has been developed and proposed in order to improve energy efficiency of ships. In addition, IMO have also proposed the best practices for energy saving solutions for existing ships through the SEEMP Guidelines. However, these proposed energy saving solutions (i.e. CO2 abatement solutions) do not give sufficient reliability due to the uncertainties of various parameters surrounding ships. These uncertainties may have a significant impact on effectiveness of individual energy …

Effect Of Muscle Length On Cross-Bridge Kinetics In Intact Cardiac Trabeculae At Body Temperature, Nima Milani-Nejad, Ying Xu, Jonathan P. Davis, Kenneth S. Campbell, Paul M. L. Janssen Dec 2012

Effect Of Muscle Length On Cross-Bridge Kinetics In Intact Cardiac Trabeculae At Body Temperature, Nima Milani-Nejad, Ying Xu, Jonathan P. Davis, Kenneth S. Campbell, Paul M. L. Janssen

Physiology Faculty Publications

Dynamic force generation in cardiac muscle, which determines cardiac pumping activity, depends on both the number of sarcomeric cross-bridges and on their cycling kinetics. The Frank–Starling mechanism dictates that cardiac force development increases with increasing cardiac muscle length (corresponding to increased ventricular volume). It is, however, unclear to what extent this increase in cardiac muscle length affects the rate of cross-bridge cycling. Previous studies using permeabilized cardiac preparations, sub-physiological temperatures, or both have obtained conflicting results. Here, we developed a protocol that allowed us to reliably and reproducibly measure the rate of tension redevelopment (ktr; which depends …

The Manpower Aspect In The Field Of Sports, Melania Kiswandari Dec 2012

The Manpower Aspect In The Field Of Sports, Melania Kiswandari

Indonesia Law Review

As a result of enhanced professionalism and commercialization in the field of sports, it has become an industry of its own. Professionalism and industrialization are correlated; therefore sports actors’ performance achieved as a result of their professionalism lead to the commercialization, and even to the industrialization of certain (branches of) sports. On the other hand, it is considered that industrialization which involves the commercial aspect is able to maintain, and even enhance sports actors’ professionalism/performance. In practice, such correlation is not always directly proportional, but inversely proportional. There have been cases of issues related to sports actors’ welfare not being …

The Rights Of Private Economic Actors Under The World Trade Organization Agreements In Indonesia, Intan Soeparna

Indonesia Law Review

Nothing in the Uruguay Round mentions directly about rights of private economic actors. It seems that the relationship to private economic actors (or may be individual) does not exist within the WTO Agreements, because as a general rule, private parties are not legal subjects of the international legal order. However, this article will prevail upon this situation, by looking closer at the essence of the WTO Agreements to discern the rights of private economic actors that derive from the WTO. The main question of this article is to what extent then Indonesia is dealing with the rights of private economic …

Drone Federalism: Civilian Drones And The Things They Carry, Margot E. Kaminski Dec 2012

Drone Federalism: Civilian Drones And The Things They Carry, Margot E. Kaminski

Publications

Civilian drones are scheduled to be permitted in the national airspace as early as 2015. Many think Congress should establish the necessary nationwide regulations to govern both law enforcement and civilian drone use. That thinking, however, is wrong. This Essay suggests drone federalism instead: a state-based approach to privacy regulation that governs drone use by civilians, drawing on states’ experience regulating other forms of civilian-on-civilian surveillance. This approach will allow necessary experimentation in how to best balance privacy concerns against First Amendment rights in the imminent era of drone-use democratization. This Essay closes by providing some guidance to states as …
