The Economic Costs Of Tax Policy Uncertainty: Implications For Fundamental Tax Reform, Seth H. Giertz, Jacob Feldman Nov 2012

The Economic Costs Of Tax Policy Uncertainty: Implications For Fundamental Tax Reform, Seth H. Giertz, Jacob Feldman

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The U.S. faces tremendous short-term policy uncertainty, including about $5.4 trillion in tax increases over the next decade. These changes are set to take effect on January 1, 2013. It is unlikely that these changes will fully materialize, but what will happen is anyone’s guess. Over the long term, uncertainty also looms large since the U.S. federal tax system is expected to bring in far less revenue than Congress is projected to spend. In this paper, we detail the tax policy uncertainty that the U.S. faces and the economic literature to assess how this uncertainty may be affecting the economy. …

The tumor suppressor protein p53 has been described "as the guardian of the genome" for its crucial role in regulating the transcription of numerous genes responsible for cells cycle arrest, senescence, or apoptosis in response to various stress signals. Although p53 promotes longevity by decreasing the risk of cancer through activation of apoptosis or cellular senescence, several findings suggest that an increase of its activity may have deleterious effects leading to selected aspects of the aging phenotype and neurodegenerative diseases. There is the link between p53 and oxidative stress, the latter a crucial factor that contributes to neurodegenerative processes like …

Ecological Momentary Assessment And Time-Varying Factors Associated With Eating And Physical Activity, Amy Jeffers Nov 2012

Ecological Momentary Assessment And Time-Varying Factors Associated With Eating And Physical Activity, Amy Jeffers

Theses and Dissertations

The obesity epidemic is a significant problem in the United States. It is well established that lifestyle factors, such as unhealthy eating and physical inactivity, are key contributors. These causes are generally voluntary activities and it is important to examine health decision-making with respect to these behaviors. The current study examined time-varying factors of stress and mood and their relationship with healthy eating and physical activity in a sample of undergrads (N = 26). Ecological momentary assessment via one's cell phone was used to collect multiple measurements over six days. Positive mood was found to follow physical activity episodes for …

The Evolution Of Host Specificity In The Vertebrate Gut Symbiont Lactobacillus Reuteri, Steven Frese Nov 2012

The Evolution Of Host Specificity In The Vertebrate Gut Symbiont Lactobacillus Reuteri, Steven Frese

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The vertebrate gut is home to one of the densest populations of life on Earth. This microbial community has a profound effect on host health, nutrition, development, behavior, and evolution. However, very little is known about how these microbes have evolved with their vertebrate hosts, how and whether they select hosts or how they remain associated with their hosts. Recent work identified Lactobacillus reuteri as an organism that is composed of host-specific sub-populations, each population associated with a different host animal. Representatives from each host-associated population were tested for their ability to colonize gnotobiotic mice, which only rodent strains could …

Federal and state laws rely on multiple indicators to measure and improve student performance. However, inadequate attention has been directed at school climate as a means to improve student academic achievement even through there is a diverse body of research linking school climate to student achievement and academic performance (Kober, 2001; Loukas & Robinson, 2005; Shindler, et al 2004). The specific purpose of this study is to examine elementary and middle school teachers' perceptions of school climate dimensions such as: use of instructional time, access to resources, and adequate facilities, in relationship to students academic achievement in an urban school …

The Connection Of The Parental Understanding Of Phenylketonuria And Demographic Information To Recommended Treatment Blood Levels Of Phenylalanine Of Children In Their Care, Megan Kathleen Clise Nov 2012

The Connection Of The Parental Understanding Of Phenylketonuria And Demographic Information To Recommended Treatment Blood Levels Of Phenylalanine Of Children In Their Care, Megan Kathleen Clise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism. In PKU phenylalanine cannot be converted to tyrosine; when phenylalanine levels remain elevated intellectual disabilities, as well as other side effects, can occur. These side effects can be prevented if the phenylalanine levels remain within treatment range. The purpose of this study was to determine if the parents' understanding of PKU and demographics affected the children's phenylalanine level. A questionnaire was developed to asses the parents' understanding and demographics; these were then correlated to the child's average blood phenylalanine levels using Pearson's Correlation. The strongest relationship to the child's blood …

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock Nov 2012

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In birds, altricial young depend upon adults for food and protection during the first few weeks of life. Begging is hypothesized to communicate an honest signal of a nestling's nutritional needs. I investigated two factors that may influence rate and duration of begging: 1) a nestling's corticosterone (CORT) levels, and 2) food availability. I examined the role of CORT in Florida scrub-jay nestlings through manipulation of CORT levels on days 8-11 post-hatch. I studied the role of food availability by indirectly supplementing all nestlings within a brood through their parents. I quantified nestling and adult behaviors using high definition video. …

The Role Of The Gonads And Incest Avoidance In The Regulation Of Sexual Behavior In Damaraland Mole-Rats, Sara Nicole Carter Nov 2012

The Role Of The Gonads And Incest Avoidance In The Regulation Of Sexual Behavior In Damaraland Mole-Rats, Sara Nicole Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Damaraland mole-rat (DMR; Fukoymys damarensis) is one of a small number of mammals that are eusocial. In this mating system, only a single pair reproduce while the other remaining colony members are non-reproductive. Non-breeders exhibit sexual behavior only when paired with unfamiliar opposite-sex individuals. The role of the gonads in the regulation of reproductive behaviors in non-breeders remains unknown; however, inbreeding avoidance has been hypothesized to account, in part, for the lack of reproductive behavior in non-breeding individuals. The mechanism that regulates incest avoidance also remains unknown. The aims of this study were twofold; first, to investigate the role …

An Intelligent Network Of Sensors For Border And Perimeter Security, William E. White Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Border and perimeter security is a constant concern to many government and private entities. Large, often remote, areas must be constantly monitored for intruders or suspicious activity. This work investigates whether a wireless sensor network of intelligent nodes can provide the infrastructure needed to such applications. First a real time automated algorithm is developed for an existing profiling sensor. Results show that this automation produces reliable results on a limited dataset. To provide a more versatile, easier to deploy solution, a wireless sensor network is designed for deployment in a sensor field test bed located at Meeman-Shelby Forest. The wireless …

Sciencebase (Sm) For The World Wide Web: Scientific Information For Scientists, Jay Haron

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

KR ScienceBase is a World Wide Web-based searching tool that allows scientists and knowledge workers to access high-quality databases. It is targeted at chemists and biologists, but physicians, other health care professionals, and people in related disciplines can also benefit from its use. By designing a product that automatically selects databases, and formulates a search utilizing state-of-the-art search strategies, a scientist can easily obtain answers to questions that they come across in the research process. This allows the researcher to be more productive. However, when researchers need a more thorough search performed, they will still need the information professional.

Characterization Of The Role Of Mitochondrial Function During Tumor Development And Muscle Wasting, Xiao Wang Nov 2012

Characterization Of The Role Of Mitochondrial Function During Tumor Development And Muscle Wasting, Xiao Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Mitochondria play important roles in multiple cellular processes including energy metabolism, cell death, and aging. Regulated energy production and utilization is critical in maintaining energy homeostasis in normal cells and functional organisms. However, mitochondria go through a series of morphological and functional alterations during carcinogenesis. The metabolic profile in transformed cells is altered to accommodate their fast proliferation, confer resistance to cell death, or facilitate metastasis. On the organism level, mitochondrial function is crucial especially in tissues that require high energy supply, such as brain and skeletal muscle. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implied in various neurodegenerative disorders and deteriorating chronic …
