Nobody’S Perfect: A Qualitative Examination Of African American Caregivers And Their Adolescent Daughters’ Perceptions Of Adolescent Girls’ Body Image, Michell Pope
Theses and Dissertations
The increasingly high rates of body dissatisfaction among adolescent girls are alarming. Research suggests that cultural norms emphasizing thinness and unrealistic standards of beauty may be contributing to this growing problem. This is concerning given the link between negative body image and a host of unhealthy behaviors in girls. Although historically African American adolescent girls have exhibited higher levels of body satisfaction than their counterparts, there is growing evidence to suggest that this may be changing because of the body-related messages they receive from their parents, peers and the media. The present study examines these messages from both maternal caregivers’ …

The Relationship Between Sleep Deprivation, Food Motivation, And Energy Intake In Normal-Weight And Obese Females, Lora Light Romney
The Relationship Between Sleep Deprivation, Food Motivation, And Energy Intake In Normal-Weight And Obese Females, Lora Light Romney
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: Sleep deprivation has been proposed as a potential correlate of obesity, particularly influencing energy intake. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare neural indices of attention related to food motivation and energy intake in normal-weight and obese women under two separate sleep conditions: 1) sleep-restricted (<5 hours) and 2) recommended sleep (~8 hours). This study used a combined cross-over and ex post facto design with condition order counter-balanced. Methods: Twenty-two normal-weight (age=30.9±9.5y, BMI=22.0±1.6 kg/m2) and 18 obese (age=29.7±10.7 y, BMI=36.4±5.3 kg/m2) women completed both sleep conditions. To confirm sleep levels, participants recorded sleep quality and quantity via sleep logs and wore a wrist actigraph. Following each condition, participants reported to the laboratory under the same fed state (energy shake ~10% of total daily needs) to verify they followed the sleep protocol. Subsequently, motivation for food was tested using electroencephalogram (EEG); participants completed a computerized passive-viewing task of food and flowers, while event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded. After EEG testing, participants continued their normal routine but recorded all energy intake using weighed food scales. There were no instructions or limitations on dietary intake. Analyses included P300 and LPP amplitudes in response to picture type, total next day energy intake, and energy intake by several periods of the day. Results: Participants averaged 4.7±0.4 hours of sleep during the sleep-restricted condition and 7.7±0.3 hours during the recommended sleep condition (F=1057.02; P<0.0001). There was no group*condition interaction for next day food motivation (P300: F<2.896, P>0.09; LPP: F<2.967, P>0.093). Next day total energy intake also did not differ by group*condition (F=1.81; P=0.187). When participants were pooled, there was no difference in energy intake by sleep condition (F=0.00; P=0.953). However, when participants’ energy intake was analyzed during the lunch period (following testing to 1:30pm) there was a …2.967,>5>

Village Of Cuba St. Francis Of Assisi Park Improvement Plan Community Input Report, Healthy Kids, Healthy Cuba, Step Into Cuba
Reports & Documents
At the request of the Village of Cuba Council, Healthy Kids, Healthy Cuba and Step into Cuba have gathered additional community input regarding the proposed improvements to the Village of Cuba St Francis of Assisi Park. Previously, we had obtained community input through a series of meetings held in Cuba. Chance Munns, a landscape architect working with the University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center, developed the community ideas into three maps with descriptions of the proposed improvements. At the request of the Village Council last fall, we obtained additional input from the Cuba community on the Park improvement plan …

Epid-Based Dose Verification For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Joseph Gardner
Epid-Based Dose Verification For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Joseph Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Dose verification is a critical component of adaptive radiotherapy, as it provides a measurement of treatment delivery success. Based on the measured outcome, the plan may be adapted to account for differences between the planned dose and the delivered dose. Although placement of an EPID behind the patient during treatment allows for exit dosimetry which may be used to reconstruct the delivered patient dose via backprojection of the fluence, there have not been any studies examining the basic assumption of backprojection-based dose verification: that deviations between the expected and delivered exit fluences are totally caused by errors in the delivered …
The Psychometric Evaluation Of The Memphis Gambling Inventory: A Problem Gambling Brief Screen For Primary Care Settings, George B. Mitzner
The Psychometric Evaluation Of The Memphis Gambling Inventory: A Problem Gambling Brief Screen For Primary Care Settings, George B. Mitzner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Central to a public health approach to gambling problems is early detection. Drawbacks of traditional screening efforts have reinforced the need for brief problem gambling screens particularly in time sensitive settings such as primary care. The only, existing primary care brief instrument is limited by its psychometric development and is not informed by contemporary gambling research. The Memphis Gambling Inventory (MGI) is a new problem gambling brief screen that assesses several dimensions of gambling behavior, cognition, motivation, and consequences. The current study evaluated the screening performance of the MGI's original 15-item pool. ROC analysis revealed a 3-item MGI that correctly …

The Music Written For Thea King: With Emphasis On The Mini Concerto By Gordon Jacob And The Clarinet Quintet By Benjamin Frankel, Amy Michelle Langley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
English clarinetist Thea King devoted a large portion of her career to the performance of British music, especially the pieces that were dedicated to her late husband, the clarinet virtuoso Frederick Thurston. King received six dedications as well, and including her commissioned works, seven pieces were written for her: the Clarinet Quintet by Benjamin Frankel, the Sonata for clarinet and piano by Arnold Cooke, Fantasia for clarinet and piano by Elizabeth Maconchy, the Mini Concerto by Gordon Jacob, Concertante for two winds by Priaulx Rainier, the Clarinet Concerto by Howard Blake, and Sonante for clarinet and piano by Jeffrey Lewis. …

Calcium And Vitamin D Intake In Adults With Sickle Cell Anemia, Taylor M. Burgmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic blood disorder that affects the transportation of oxygen through the blood. It causes episodes of pain, which may affect dietary intake. The purpose of this study was to look at the intake of calcium and vitamin D in adults with SCA, compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for these nutrients. This was a retrospective study of 12 patients with SCA using food diaries collected from a parent study. There were 6 males and 6 females included and their ages ranged from 21 to 52 years (median=31.75 years). A one-sample t-test was performed …
Zinc Modifies The Effect Of Phyto-Oestrogens On Osteoblast And Osteoclast Differentiation In Vitro., S Karieb, Sw Fox
Zinc Modifies The Effect Of Phyto-Oestrogens On Osteoblast And Osteoclast Differentiation In Vitro., S Karieb, Sw Fox
School of Biomedical Sciences
Osteoblast and osteoclast activity is disrupted in post-menopausal osteoporosis. Thus, to fully address this imbalance, therapies should reduce bone resorption and promote bone formation. Dietary factors such as phyto-oestrogens and Zn have beneficial effects on osteoblast and osteoclast activity. However, the effect of combinations of these factors has not been widely studied. We therefore examined the effect of coumestrol, daidzein and genistein in the presence or absence of zinc sulphate (Zn) on osteoclast and osteoblast activity. Osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption were significantly reduced by coumestrol (10- 7 m), daidzein (10- 5 m) and genistein (10- 7 m); and this …

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore
International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
This essay explores the ways States use their domestic laws to regulate activities that cross national borders. Domestic-law enforcement decisions play an underappreciated role in the development of international regulatory policy, particularly in situations where the enforcing State's power to apply its law extraterritorially is not contested. Collective action problems suggest there will be an undersupply of enforcement decisions that promote global welfare and an oversupply of enforcement decisions that promote national welfare. These collective action problems may be mitigated in part by government networks and other forms of regulatory cooperation.

Remarks, The Big Picture: Beyond Hot Spots & Crises In Our Interconnected World, Anne-Marie Slaughter
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
The picture of foreign policy as seen by the United States has changed dramatically over the last few decades. The United States now faces a world far more interconnected and integrated than the foreign policy landscape of the Cold War and its immediate aftermath. Instead of one or two super power centers, the world today is made up of multiple global and regional power centers. This essay, transcribed and adapted from remarks given by Anne-Marie Slaughter on March 15, 2012, at the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, examines the shift to a multi-polar world of foreign …
The Rise Of Transparency And The Decline Of Secrecy In The Age Of Global And Social Media, P.J. Crowley
The Rise Of Transparency And The Decline Of Secrecy In The Age Of Global And Social Media, P.J. Crowley
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
News reporting of a wide range of sensitive government policies, operations, and internal deliberations has raised understandable concerns that U.S. national security is being compromised. In response, there is an increase in investigations and prosecutions and proposed legislation to plug government leaks. But a broader reality may be at work. In the increasingly interconnected and transparent world of the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, satellite television, WikiLeaks, omniscient cellphones and technology-enhanced revolutions such as the Arab Awakening, governments have lost their ability to control the flow of information. More people have access to more information, with the ability to communicate anything from …

Background
People living with HIV (PLWH) who have positive tuberculin skin tests (TST) benefit from isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) whereas those testing TST-negative do not. Revised World Health Organization guidelines explicitly state that assessment of TST is not a requirement for initiation of IPT. However, it is not known what proportions of patients will benefit from IPT if implemented without targeting according to TST status. We therefore determined the proportions of PLWH who test TST-positive.
Methodology/Principal Findings
We systematically reviewed the literature published between January 1990 and February 2012 to determine the proportions of patients without active tuberculosis attending HIV …
