Special Educators' Perceptions Of Paperwork Demands And Job Efficacy: A Qualitative Study, Deborah K. Imhoff
Special Educators' Perceptions Of Paperwork Demands And Job Efficacy: A Qualitative Study, Deborah K. Imhoff
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
This study examines the growing evidence that paperwork burdens associated with the jobs of special education teachers are contributing to high attrition rates among these educators. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact that paperwork demands have on special educators’ decisions to remain in this profession. In examining the literature for the primary reasons of difficulty in retaining special education teachers, several themes emerged: increasing paperwork burdens and administrative tasks as a result of budget cuts and increased class sizes in both special and general education classes, NCLB legal requirements and accountability policies, and time constraints. In-depth …
Cable Median Barrier Failure Analysis And Prevention, Dean L. Sicking, Cody S. Stolle
Cable Median Barrier Failure Analysis And Prevention, Dean L. Sicking, Cody S. Stolle
Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports
Cross-median crashes have been identified as one of the highest injury or fatality risk crash types. Although crossmedian crashes account for only 2% to 5% of all median crash events, they are disproportionately represented in the number and frequency of fatalities on interstate roadways. Many states have utilized cable median barriers to reduce the risk of cross-median crashes, frequently with great success. However, cable median barriers are also fixed obstacles to errant vehicles. Cable median barriers can place occupants at increased risk of severe injury or fatality if the barrier fails to adequately contain and redirect errant vehicles, resulting in …

The Effectiveness Of A District-Wide Training Initiative On Determining Preparedness Of Educational Leaders In A Large, Southeastern Louisiana School System, Jeanne Bordelon Wagner
Dissertations
A nationwide shortage of qualified, experienced applicants to fill the roles of educational leaders has led to a hiring crisis among school districts across America. The diminishing pool of applicants, accompanied by a high turnover rate of practicing administrators and increasing accountability demands, has revealed the importance of recruitment and retention of educational leaders. As the roles of school administrators are constantly evolving and increasing in complexity, recruiting skillfully trained personnel proficient in all dimensions of school leadership is a catalyst for increasing student achievement and for reducing principal attrition rates. The purpose of this research was to reveal perceived …

A Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave-Based Boundary Detection System In A Small Pcb Profile, Hamid R. Asgarian
Master's Theses
Falls are a cause of concern for the elderly because it can make them unable to call for help. A monitoring system can detect automatically their immobility and provide help to the elderly if they fall. Ultra-wide band signals for a monitoring system is an excellent choice since it has low enough power to not interfere with other medical and household electronics as well as being able to transmit data to a central monitoring unit. One part of this monitoring system is a boundary detection system used to verify that the monitoring system is not capturing events outside the monitoring …
Controlling Nanoparticle Dispersion For Nanoscopic Self-Assembly, Nathan S. Starkweather
Controlling Nanoparticle Dispersion For Nanoscopic Self-Assembly, Nathan S. Starkweather
Master's Theses
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter and devices on the nanometer scale. Below the critical dimension length of 100nm, materials begin to display vastly different properties than their macro- or micro- scale counterparts. The exotic properties of nanomaterials may trigger the start of a new technological revolution, similar to the electronics revolution of the late 20th century. Current applications of nanotechnology primarily make use of nanoparticles in bulk, often being made into composites or mixtures. While these materials have fantastic properties, organization of nano and microstructures of nanoparticles may allow the development of novel devices with many unique properties. …

Refinancing Pressure And Earnings Management: Evidence From Changes In Short-Term Debt And Discretionary Accruals, L. Paige Fields, Manu Gupta, Michael S. Wilkins, Shage Zhang
School of Business Faculty Research
Refinancing pressure may entice a very specific form of managerial misbehavior on the part of borrowers. Borrowers utilizing a greater amount of short term debt in one period may feel pressure to make their firms look as attractive as possible leading into the next period when refinancing may take place. In other words, potential refinancing pressure may lead managers to manipulate earnings. We examine the relation between changes in debt in current liabilities (short-term debt) and discretionary accruals as an indicator of the propensity to manage earnings. Our results show that (i) firms have higher discretionary accruals during periods of …

Fleeing East From Indian Country: State V. Eriksen And Tribal Inherent Sovereign Authority To Continue Cross-Jurisdictional Fresh Pursuit, Kevin Naud Jr.
Washington Law Review
In State v. Eriksen, the Washington State Supreme Court held that Indian tribes do not possess the inherent sovereign authority to continue cross-jurisdictional fresh pursuit and detain a non-Indian who violated the law on reservation land. This Comment argues the Eriksen Court’s reliance on RCW 10.92.020 is misplaced. RCW 10.92.020 is irrelevant to a consideration of sovereign authority. States do not have the authority to unilaterally define tribal power. A tribe retains sovereign powers not taken by Congress, given away in a treaty, or removed by implication of its dependent status. The Eriksen Court also misinterpreted the state statute …

Neglected Intra-Cervical Bizarre Foreign Object, Hassan S. Abduljabbar, Majd A. Sbenati
Saudi Medical Journal
Foreign objects in the female genital tract neglected for a long period of time may lead to many clinical problems including recurrent vaginal discharge and infertility. We present a case of 3-year long infertility, and 11-year long recurrent vaginal discharge in a 24-year-old female. She was treated empirically with several courses of antibiotics, which did not resolve her symptoms. Before her marriage, the family declined initial attempts to perform a physical examination due to fear of tearing the hymen, which has many social implications in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After her marriage, she suffered from infertility and continued to …

The Banaban Resettlement: Implications For Pacific Environmental Migration, Gil Marvel P. Tabucanon
Pacific Studies
In the mid-1940s, Banaban Islanders relocated to Rabi Island in Fiji. The decision was the culmination of decades of phosphate mining on Banaba in colonial times. This article examines the context and long-term impacts of policies and legal frameworks relevant to the Banaban resettlement. The Banaban experience is a Significant case study because it involved relocation of an entire island population rather than individual or family migration, and the resettlement crossed international boundaries. Although the Banaban resettlement is unique and was contingent on peculiar colonial and factual circumstances it offers insights for environmental migration. Long-term preparation establishing trust funds, advance …

National concerns, such as obesity, should be addressed through national efforts. Considering the national reach of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and their ability to influence the diets of a significant amount of the nation's population, changes to these programs should be made to encourage healthy nutrition.

Food Sovereignty In The United States: Supporting Local And Regional Food Systems, Allison Condra
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Today, perhaps more than ever, an increasing portion of U.S. society is paying attention to and asking questions about our food and agricultural system. We are recognizing the immense consequences of the agricultural "efficiencies" we valued and wrote into our policies in the seventies-for example, growing corn "fence row to fence row" and the ease of microwaved meals and prepackaged foods. 3 The increasingly global nature of our food system and its consequences are becoming more apparent. Food safety concerns-prompted by a growing number of foodborne illness outbreaks and the government's response in the 2009 Food Safety Modernization Act-loom large …

Obesity among children in the United States has tripled over the last thirty years. Incidentally, the world's largest fast food restaurant, McDonald's, first introduced its children's Happy Meal thirty-two years ago. Shortly thereafter, the first Disney inspired toy found its way into Happy Meals and the hearts of the "billions and billions served." Although the iconic Happy Meal and accompanying toy have become "a staple of Americana akin to baseball and apple pie," the continued existence of the practice is being threatened in light of the powerful influence toys have on children's food choices, thus contributing to the current obesity …

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) uses grade standards to uniformly characterize the quality and condition of agricultural commodities. The standards are promulgated by the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Services (AMS) division in consultation with farming industry groups. Emphasizing produce attributes such as surface defects, shape, cleanliness, color, maturity, and decay, grade standards improve the marketability of agricultural commodities by establishing a common industry language for use in contracts. Use of such a language enables wholesale buyers to know the quality of commodities without first having to inspect them, thus facilitating trade by lowering transaction costs.

The Equilibrium Of Collective Wrongness Or The Effect Of Mindfulness On Advisor Performance After Market Dislocations, Philipp Hensler
The Equilibrium Of Collective Wrongness Or The Effect Of Mindfulness On Advisor Performance After Market Dislocations, Philipp Hensler
Student Scholarship
We conducted, to our knowledge, the first empirical study of mindfulness with respect to financial advisors and their post 2008 financial crisis behavior. Our hypotheses were derived from semi-structured interviews with financial advisors, the results of which provided the framework for modeling advisor behavior in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Survey responses from 346 U.S. financial advisors revealed surprising insights about the effects of individual and organizational mindfulness on actual and perceived performance levels during the turbulent 2008-2012 period. Results suggest that mindful advisors affiliated with mindful firms deliver better client performance in dynamic markets. Less mindful advisors …
