During the last decade the ecotourism business has boomed in Puerto Rico. There are significant increases in eco-related businesses around the Island. The majority of ecorelated businesses in Puerto Rico are tour guided adventures, canopy tours, surfing, biking, among others. All the activities mentioned above have the same purpose: physical activity and group interaction. These activities promote a healthier environment for the participants, which help increase their physical activity level and at the same time encourage the use of the green spaces. This study utilizes Dr. de Vries’ five direct contact mechanisms to identify their presence and potential impact at …

Shrimp Aquaculture And Aguadulce: A Broken Partnership., Sylvia M. Bolanos
Open Access Dissertations
A socio-economic impact study was conducted in Aguadulce, Panama to analyze the viability of the shrimp aquaculture industry. Two visits in 2004 and 2010 document the changes the industry underwent through the use of a survey and interviews of knowledgeable informants. Interviews were conducted among field and processing plant employees, managers and owners, government officials, and local artisanal fishermen. It was of relevance to understand the viability of this industry at both the town and country level. Changes are evident when comparing the data. The industry has undergone drastic changes resulting from the spread of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) …
Deming-Based Lean-Six Sigma Applied To The Length Of Stay In An Urban Emergency Department, Mary C. Mckenry
Deming-Based Lean-Six Sigma Applied To The Length Of Stay In An Urban Emergency Department, Mary C. Mckenry
Open Access Dissertations
Deming-based Lean Six-Sigma management is applied to the Emergency Department (ED) of a large metropolitan university hospital to demonstrate the effectiveness of using Deming's approaches to improve processes which will allow a reduction in the length of time the patient remains within the ED. A Voice of Customer analysis is utilized to identify priorities for improvement. Change concepts are utilized for the development of the changes that will improve the ED length of stay. Control charts are used to illustrate the estimated effect of implementation of the proposed changes. A recommendation for further study is enclosed.

Where is health on your priority list? Good health is crucial for all people, but especially for musicians (or athletes) who need their bodies in top performance shape. Musicians in the conservatory need to be aware of how to stay healthy. The purposes of the Health and Wellness Page are to promote good health, and to create awareness of reliable resources on healthy lifestyle choices as musicians. [excerpt]

Sensitivity Analysis For Causal Inference Under Unmeasured Confounding And Measurement Error Problems, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Sensitivity Analysis For Causal Inference Under Unmeasured Confounding And Measurement Error Problems, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In this paper we present a sensitivity analysis for drawing inferences about parameters that are not estimable from observed data without additional assumptions. We present the methodology using two different examples: a causal parameter that is not identifiable due to violations of the randomization assumption, and a parameter that is not estimable in the nonparametric model due to measurement error. Existing methods for tackling these problems assume a parametric model for the type of violation to the identifiability assumption, and require the development of new estimators and inference for every new model. The method we present can be used in …
Computationally Efficient Confidence Intervals For Cross-Validated Area Under The Roc Curve Estimates, Erin Ledell, Maya L. Petersen, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Computationally Efficient Confidence Intervals For Cross-Validated Area Under The Roc Curve Estimates, Erin Ledell, Maya L. Petersen, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In binary classification problems, the area under the ROC curve (AUC), is an effective means of measuring the performance of your model. Most often, cross-validation is also used, in order to assess how the results will generalize to an independent data set. In order to evaluate the quality of an estimate for cross-validated AUC, we must obtain an estimate for its variance. For massive data sets, the process of generating a single performance estimate can be computationally expensive. Additionally, when using a complex prediction method, calculating the cross-validated AUC on even a relatively small data set can still require a …

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Studies estimating health effects of long-term air pollution exposure often use a two-stage approach, building exposure models to assign individual-level exposures which are then used in regression analyses. This requires accurate exposure modeling and careful treatment of exposure measurement error. To illustrate the importance of carefully accounting for exposure model characteristics in two-stage air pollution studies, we consider a case study based on data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). We present national spatial exposure models that use partial least squares and universal kriging to estimate annual average concentrations of four PM2.5 components: elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), …

Can The Effective Use Of Imagery In Marketing Publications Help Create A More Diversified Campus Community At Illinois State University?, Deanne Hamblin
ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative
Higher education management has shifted over time; replacing the democratic model with the business model. As a result, universities have incorporated extensive marketing campaigns to target students for recruitment. Unfortunately, the imagery used in marketing publications in these campaigns is not always effective in creating diversified campus communities. This publication will summarize the ethnographic study conducted in the fall of 2012 to assess Illinois State University’s use of imagery in their marketing campaigns to first year students. Surveys, observations, and a review of photographs used in publications over the course of Illinois State University’s marketing history will be discussed and …
