Better Together: Expanding Rural Partnerships To Support Families, Harriet Shaklee, Jeri Bigbee, Misty Wall Oct 2012

Better Together: Expanding Rural Partnerships To Support Families, Harriet Shaklee, Jeri Bigbee, Misty Wall

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chronic shortages of health, social service, and mental health professionals in rural areas necessitate creative partnerships in support of families. Cooperative extension professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences and community health nurses are introduced as trusted professionals in rural communities who can bring critical skills to human services teams. Multidisciplinary prevention programs offer particularly good contexts for county extension educators and community health nurses to work in collaboration with social workers. The case of grandparents raising grandchildren illustrates the critical roles that can be filled by professionals in these two fields to extend the reach of family support programs.

To be able to realize child welfare, the family, society and the government should pay attention to the rights and needs of children. To ensure the psychological dan social development, children need love, understanding, recreational atmosphere, creative stimulation, self-actualization, and intellectual development. Therefore they require early socialization and basic education, the teaching of social responsibility, social roles and basic skills in order to become useful citizens. Children from poor families are often raised with parenting less conducive to their growth and development. Reflective Writing In Pre-Service Teachers' Teaching: What Does It Promote?, Etty Cohen-Sayag, Dita Fischl

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this study, we examined changes in levels of pre service teachers' reflective writing and tried to identify links between these changes and pre service teachers' success in teaching. Participants were two groups of pre-service special education teachers that taught in two different special education settings:learning difficulties classes and multiple and profound intellectual disabilities classes. Data collection was performed during two consecutive academic semesters, including a monthly structured journal about teaching events during field experience and summative grades, assessing pre service teachers' teaching activities for each semester. Journal analysis referred to three reflective levels of explanations, descriptive, comparative and critical. …

Intergenerational Transfers In Long Term Care, Monika Lopez Anuarbe Sep 2012

Intergenerational Transfers In Long Term Care, Monika Lopez Anuarbe

Economics Faculty Publications

How are parental inter-vivos transfers to their children and children’s informal care of parents influenced by personal characteristics, family conditions and state specific long term care policies? AHEAD data from 1993 and 1995 and a two-party choice model are used to guide the estimation of OLS and binary logit models of the amount and likelihood of inter-vivos transfers to children and informal care of parents. Results suggest that both parents’ characteristics and their offspring’s characteristics affect parental gifts to children and children’s time assistance to their parents, highlighting the interdependent nature of these decisions. Furthermore, though state policies did not …

The Use Of Preparedness For Care Giving Scale On Family Caregivers And It's Outcome, Hui Chin Chua, Sujata Rajaram Sep 2012

The Use Of Preparedness For Care Giving Scale On Family Caregivers And It's Outcome, Hui Chin Chua, Sujata Rajaram

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Aim: Family caregivers provide care at home equivalent to that of nurses. They monitor patient's condition, recognize impending problems such as side effects of medication and change the dressings of patients. They provide a high level of skill at home, they are not prepared for care-giving and lack the knowledge and skills required to provide care. Nurses evaluate caregiver preparedness before patient's transition from acute care settings to other settings.

Method: Preparedness for Care giving scale created by Archbald, et.al in 1990 is a caregiver self rated instrument that consists of 8 items that asks caregivers how well prepared they …

Bridging The Digital Divide: College Students Mentoring Seniors Via An Intergenerational Interdisciplinary Computing Course, Sharon Stahl Wexler, Lin J. Drury

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Nursing and Computer Science faculty created an interdisciplinary Gerotechnology course that prepares students to mentor older adults in computer literacy. The goal of the partnership is to prepare students for a future living and working in a world dominated by seniors. Residents of long term care facilities are matched with students who assist with computer and internet use. The course introduces students to residents with complex chronic illnesses while demonstrating that older adults are vital human beings who grow and change throughout the semester. Students have an aging sensitivity experience and practice communication with seniors. Nursing students assess the physical …

Supporting Excellence In Long-Term Care With Student Ebp Projects, Suzanne Beltz, Loree Dubose Sep 2012

Supporting Excellence In Long-Term Care With Student Ebp Projects, Suzanne Beltz, Loree Dubose

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

With any clinical experience, nursing students learning in the long-term care setting pose questions regarding specific practices by the health care provider(s). This curiosity of comparing what they are learning in the classroom with what they see in the clinical setting can provide learning opportunities and opportunities for best-practice dissemination to care givers in long-term care. The Institute of Medicine identified employing evidence-based practice as a core competency for providing quality and safe patient care (Finkleman & Kenner, 2009). This practice has more prongs than research alone; it includes client values and preferences; client history and assessment data; clinical expertise; …

Nursing Education: Building Gerontological Capacity And Capability By Improving Perceptions Of Older Adults By Nursing Students, Barbara A. Heise, Vickie Johnsen Sep 2012

Nursing Education: Building Gerontological Capacity And Capability By Improving Perceptions Of Older Adults By Nursing Students, Barbara A. Heise, Vickie Johnsen

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

An aging crisis exists globally. Despite the influx of the older adult population, there exists a lack of trained gerontological healthcare professionals (Lun, 2011). Ageism is commonplace. Nursing students frequently see gerontological nursing as the last area in which to work. A lack of anything in common and anxiety about working with older adults is often expressed. Nursing clinical placements in gerontology demonstrate equivocal results. Placements in long-term care (LTC) facilities may enhance negative perceptions (Marsland & Hickey, 2003). Clinical experiences with healthy older adults may improve student attitudes toward working with older adults (Furze et al, 2008). A concern …

Educating For Success In Evidence-Based Practice, Lin J. Drury, Sharon Stahl Wexler Sep 2012

Educating For Success In Evidence-Based Practice, Lin J. Drury, Sharon Stahl Wexler

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The profession of nursing endorses EBP as a means to ensure high quality care, yet many practicing nurses do not have the necessary tools. Faculty must prepare students to make evidence-based decisions in clinical practice. Our previous course had a traditional research focus. EBP was integrated in other courses. Students did not develop workable EBP skills. Student feedback indicated a lack of understanding of the relationship of research to practice, little confidence in appraising the literature and applying it to the clinical setting. This project presents the integration of EBP throughout an accelerated BSN curriculum. Evidence based practice is introduced …

Impact Of The Geriatric Medication Game On Nursing Students Empathy And Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Karen S. Yehle, Aleda M. H. Chen, Mary E. Kiersma, Kimberly S. Plake Sep 2012

Impact Of The Geriatric Medication Game On Nursing Students Empathy And Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Karen S. Yehle, Aleda M. H. Chen, Mary E. Kiersma, Kimberly S. Plake

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: It is estimated that in 2050 nearly two billion people worldwide will be 60 years or older, and nurses must be well-prepared to improve and address their health-related needs. However, it may be difficult for students to understand and empathize with older adults, as they may not yet have experienced aging-related challenges. The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of participation in an aging simulation game on nursing students' empathy and attitudes toward older adults as well as their understanding of the healthcare system.

Methods: Nursing students played the role of an older adult during a …
