Infusing Oral Health Care Into Nursing Curriculum: Addressing Preventive Health In Aging And Disability, Joan Earle Hahn, Leah Fitzgerald, Young Kee Markham, Paul Glassman, Nancy Guenther

Nursing

Access to oral health care is essential for promoting and maintaining overall health and well-being, yet oral health disparities exist among vulnerable and underserved populations. While nurses make up the largest portion of the health care work force, educational preparation to address oral health needs of elders and persons with disabilities is limited across nursing curricula. This descriptive study reports on the interdisciplinary development, implementation, and testing of an oral health module that was included and infused into a graduate nursing curriculum in a three-phase plan. Phase 1 includes evaluation of a lecture presented to eight gerontological nurse practitioner (GNP) …

Protocol Assessment Adherence For Depression Among Community-Dwelling And Inpatient Older Adults, Cassie Cabor Jan 2012

Protocol Assessment Adherence For Depression Among Community-Dwelling And Inpatient Older Adults, Cassie Cabor

Nursing Student Work

Many older adults are under diagnosed and undertreated for depression by healthcare professionals (Brown, Bruce, McAvay, Raue, Lachs, & Nassisi, 2003). Depression is very prevalent in all older adults and, during times of war, veterans are at increased risk for development of some type of mental disorder (Allen & Annells, 2009). Cully, Khan, Peterson, and Zimmer (2008) indicate that almost one in 10 veterans are affected by depression. This study aimed to fill some of the gaps that exist in literature regarding depression screening and adherence to protocols for older adults. This retrospective study looked at impatient versus outpatient PHQ-2 …

A Conversation With Decesare: Toward Practical Definitions Of Critical Thinking, Yvonne Wells, Timothy Quinones Jan 2012

A Conversation With Decesare: Toward Practical Definitions Of Critical Thinking, Yvonne Wells, Timothy Quinones

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

In response to conversations of Psychology teachers in Volume I of Pedagogy and the Human Sciences (2009), Michael DeCesare (2009) called for more specific definitions of the term “critical thinking.” DeCesare questioned methods of stimulating critical thinking in the classroom that might frustrate students of psychology without furthering their learning. DeCesare also appeared to view political realities in the academy as less relevant to the teaching of diversity courses than to the personal experiences of teachers. DeCesare seems to the present authors to believe that students should be moved or transformed to engage in social change through their courses in …

The characteristics of recruitment advertisements seeking entry to mid-level communications managers within the Midwest region of the United States were divided into several categories including years of experience, formal education, and educational accreditation status. These categories were analyzed to identify trends and produce conclusions. The conclusions presented with the article indicate employers seek well-rounded and multi-faceted candidates, but overlook educational accreditation as a prerequisite for employment. Additionally, the article evidences both formal education and years of experience as an enhancement to a job seeker's …

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: How Can It Be Told Apart From Neurodegenerative Diseases Of The Elderly?, Raphael C. Zohn

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) affects more of the older population than people recognize. The underestimation of this neurological condition is due in most part to the overlap of its symptoms to other forms of dementia as well as many other geriatric conditions. The objective of this paper was to research and contrast various methods of differentiation in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus as well as find pretreatment indicators of successful surgery. Methods included reviewing of articles and studies done to evaluate which symptoms are most commonly presented in normal pressure hydrocephalus and their subtle differences from the symptoms of …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Nurse-Focused Computerized Clinical Decision Support On Urinary Catheter Practice Guidelines, Robin Lynn Neal Lang

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

A growing national emphasis has been placed on health information technology (HIT) with robust computerized clinical decision support (CCDS) integration into health care delivery. Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is the most frequent health care-associated infection in the United States and is associated with high cost, high volumes and determined to be preventable through the application of evidence-based guidelines. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, ex post facto study was to evaluate the impact of an evidence-based practice guideline computerized clinical decision support (CCDS) intervention in patients with a urinary catheter device. Correlational relationships were explored among patient and nurse-specific demographics as …

Speak Loud And Clear: Relating Intergenerational Service-Learning To Ageism And Elderspeak, Kristin Hultgren

Psychology Student Work

Speech modification for older adults, commonly referred to as “elderspeak,” is a discriminatory behavior that affects older adults in interactions with family, friends, strangers, healthcare professionals, and long-term care facility staff. The current study investigates the relationship between Intergenerational Service-Learning (ISL) and both ageism and elderspeak. Undergraduate students enrolled in service-learning (SL) projects with older adults (N = 11) or children (N = 20), completed the Fraboni Scale of Ageism (FSA), an Implicit Associations test (IAT), and a communication map task. In the communication map task, students were asked to verbally describe a route on a given map to both …

Expectations Do Not Always Influence Food Liking, Jamie Phillip Hale Jan 2012

Expectations Do Not Always Influence Food Liking, Jamie Phillip Hale

Online Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present experiment was to examine how expectations influence cracker ratings on a scale of likeability. A large body of research shows that expectations affect food experiences (Wansink, 2004; Eertmans, Baeyens & Van den Bergh, 2001; Kahkonen & Tuorila, 1998). Participants were not aware that the primary interest of the study was how expectations influence cracker ratings. Participants were assigned to either a positive expectation group or a neutral expectation group. Participants in the positive expectation group received a positive verbal cue indicating that the crackers had recently been rated high in a national taste test. The …
