Although studies demonstrate that dietary interventions for healthy adults can result in beneficial dietary changes, few studies examine when and how people change in response to these interventions, particularly in rural populations. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of change over time in healthy eating behaviors in midlife and older women in response to a one-year health-promoting intervention, and to examine what predictors (perceived benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, and family support for healthy eating) influence the changes during the intervention and follow-up. Data for this secondary analysis were from the Wellness for Women community-based trial. Women (N …

Under-Treatment Of Depression In Older Persons, Lisa C. Barry Feb 2012

Under-Treatment Of Depression In Older Persons, Lisa C. Barry

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

Due to the cross-sectional design of most existing studies, longitudinal characterization of treatment for depression in older persons is largely unknown.

Method

754 men and women (aged 70+ years) underwent monthly assessments of mental health professional use and 18-month assessments of antidepressant medication use and depressive symptoms over 9 years. Scores of ≥20 on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale denoted depression. We evaluated trends in depression treatment over time in the entire sample and among the depressed participants. Using generalized linear models, we determined characteristics associated with receiving treatment for depression in these groups and among …

Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning Feb 2012

Health Promotion And The Rural Older Adult, Gloria Ann Browning

Nursing ETDs

Older adults continue to live longer, and their desire is to not only live longer but to remain as independent as possible. Therefore, older adults strive to live more productive lives, not to just continue to exist. By living a healthy life, older adults are empowered to take control, not only of their health but of other important life decisions. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe rural older adults behaviors toward healthy lifestyles. The theoretical framework for the study was Pender's health promotion model, which addressed factors that enhance health-promoting behavior, leading to improved health and …

Increasing Consumer Involvement In Medicaid Nursing Facility Reimbursement: Lessons From New York And Minnesota, Edward Alan Miller, Cynthia Rudder Feb 2012

Increasing Consumer Involvement In Medicaid Nursing Facility Reimbursement: Lessons From New York And Minnesota, Edward Alan Miller, Cynthia Rudder

Gerontology Institute Publications

Medicaid is the major purchaser of nursing home care in the United States. States design their methods of reimbursing nursing homes to achieve desired policy objectives related to facility cost and quality, access to care, payment equity, service capacity, and budgetary control. The incorporation of multiple, sometimes conflicting incentives into state reimbursement systems has resulted in enormously complex and demanding methodologies that inhibit consumer participation in state rating setting decisions. In turn, the lack of consumer involvement has the potential to result in the adoption of reimbursement systems that favor industry and government interests at the expense of issues important …

Home Forward’S Aging In Place Initiative: Planning For Current And Future Residents, Paula C. Carder, Jenny Weinstein, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon

Institute on Aging Publications

This report was prepared on behalf of the Aging in Place Initiative of Home Forward. The Initiative sought to gather information about older persons currently residing in Home Forward’s public housing properties, from persons age 55 and older on the waitlist for housing, and from older adults in the Portland area. While local data were unavailable at the time of this report, we know that nationally, more than one-third (37 percent) of the approximately 5 million households receiving housing assistance from HUD are headed by persons age 62 and older. With this in mind, Home Forward must make decisions now …

My Community, My Voice: Rural Older Adults Speak Through Photography, Laura Stephenseon

Journal of Extension

Extension educators can serve as a catalyst to engage rural older adults to build community awareness and support healthy lifestyle choices. The study reported investigated rural elders' views of the supports and challenges for physical activity through the community-based participatory process. Older adults photographed their community to collectively assess issues they faced in maintaining active lifestyles. Elders identified and reported aspects of personal and community choice that serve to act as supports or barriers for their physical activity. Elders' engagement in community issues identification can serve to promote positive health behavior practices throughout the lifecycle.

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to examine whether the Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale, a life event scale, can be used to identify suicide attempters. The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale's ability to identify suicide attempters was tested in 1183 subjects (478 suicide attempters, 197 psychiatric inpatients, and 508 healthy controls) using the Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis and traditional psychometric methods. The Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis outperformed traditional psychometric approaches (area under the curve: 0.85 vs. 0.78; p < 0.05) and indicated that this scale may be used to identify suicide attempters. The life events that better characterized suicide attempters were change in frequency of arguments, marital separation, and personal injury. The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale may help identify suicide attempters.

The Role Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Neurodegenerative Proteinopathies And Aging., Alejandro Ocampo Jan 2012

The Role Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Neurodegenerative Proteinopathies And Aging., Alejandro Ocampo

Open Access Dissertations

Age-related neurodegenerative proteinophaties, including polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases such as Huntington’s disease, are a group of disorders in which a single protein or a set of proteins misfold and aggregate resulting in a progressive and selective loss of anatomically or physiologically related neuronal systems. Despite evidence showing a clear relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction, aging and neurodegenerative proteinophaties, the extent of the mitochondrial respiratory chain deficits, the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction and the mechanisms responsible for these processes are largely unknown. Using yeast models of cellular aging and polyQ disorders we show that mitochondrial dysfunction is an important contributor to the process …

Biennial Convention (CONV)

This presentation reports on the leadership challenges encountered when nine geographically and experientially diverse nurse leaders formed a team to co-author a manuscript. Using Authentic Leadership Theory as a framework, the successes and challenges of working in virtual teams are discussed. Over the two year Board Leadership Development Program (BLDP) experience, we communicated our respective experiences via newsgroup and email. Our unique experiences and lessons learned as Fellows led us to develop a reflective perspective of mentoring which was presented at the 41st Biennium. Subsequently, we received a request to convert this presentation into a manuscript. Thus a manuscript team …

Promoting The International Transfer Of Nursing Knowledge: The Early Planning Stage, Holly J. Diesel, Patrick Ercole, Neal Rosenburg, Donna Taliaferro

Biennial Convention (CONV)

When meeting a challenge, nursing educators produce innovative ways of transferring knowledge in their home environments. Originality is especially unique when the challenges of providing quality care are examined from a resource limited and global perspective. Searching for optimal methods of implementing knowledge transfer and facilitating the development of future nurse leaders, an approach was selected to promote local initiatives aligned with increasingly decentralized educational structures. This abstract presents the developing partnerships formed between nursing faculty and students in the United States and Cameroon, West Africa. The educational innovation was predicated on a need identified by the Cameroonian students. The …

Research Brief: "Military Service And (Dis) Continuity In The Life Course: Evidence On Dis- Advantage And Mortality From The Health And Retirement Study And The Study Of Assets And Health Dynamics Among The Oldest-Old", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about influence of military service on later-life mortality among veterans. In policy and practice, programs should provide more services for African American veterans whose fathers had a lower education, and policies should focus on employment status, income, health conditions, smoking habits, and obesity when addressing veteran mortality likelihood. Suggestions for future research include broadening the study's sample, incorporating length of service and historical context of service into the study, and expanding the number of variables studied.
