Transpersonal Effects Of Exposure To Shamanic Use Of Khoomei (Tuvan Throat Singing): Preliminary Evaluations From Training Seminars, Vladislav Matrenitsky, Harris L. Friedman
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Khoomei is a Tuvan Siberian shamanic practice involving overtone throat singing. One hundred eighty-one Western participants completed questionnaires after attending Khoomei seminars, asking about the following: motivation of people to learn shamanic throat singing; self-perception at the levels of body, energy, and mind before-and-after the seminar; feelings and sensations from practicing throat singing; transpersonal experience during throat singing; experience of inner vibrations from listening to the singing; and general state and feelings after seminar. In general, most participants reported many benefits from attending the seminars, although a few reported mild negative effects (e.g., dizziness and sadness). Of particular interest are …
Fear As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction For Retirees In Canada, Satoko Nguyen
Fear As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction For Retirees In Canada, Satoko Nguyen
2010-2016 Archived Posters
Laslett’s theory of the Third Age regarding postretirement life satisfaction was tested from the social participation perspective in Canada by a quantitative method. Fears about growing old negatively significantly predicted both life and retirement satisfactions after adjusting for significant activity theory co variates. Canada’s eminent poverty preventing strategies supported retiree life satisfaction.

Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease Exhibit Reduced Joint Powers Compared To Velocity-Matched Controls, Shane R. Wurdeman, Panagiotis Koutakis, Sara A. Myers, Jason Johanning, Iraklis Pipinos, Nikolaos Stergiou

Previous studies have shown major deficits in gait for individuals with peripheral arterial disease before and after the onset of pain. However, these studies did not have subjects ambulate at similar velocities and potential exists that the differences in joint powers may have been due to differences in walking velocity. The purpose of this study was to examine the joint moments and powers of peripheral arterial disease limbs for subjects walking at similar self-selected walking velocities as healthy controls prior to onset of any symptoms. Results revealed peripheral arterial disease patients have reduced peak hip power absorption in midstance ( …
The Opportunity For Design-Led Transport Futures, Andrée Woodcock
The Opportunity For Design-Led Transport Futures, Andrée Woodcock
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Transport is at the heart of some of today’s most significant societal grand challenges. It is a truly wicked problem. While advances in technology have simplified movement around the world, increased levels of commuting and aspirations of car ownership have impacted on economies, the environment and public health. It is estimated that transport problems cost the UK economy £45bn/year. The overdependence on personal, motorised forms of private transport is unsustainable and is fuelling ill health and obesity Addressing these issues requires a multidisciplinary, holistic approach – one that places people at the heart of the solution, that enables better transport …
Obesity In The Geriatric Population, Kimberly A. Brown
Obesity In The Geriatric Population, Kimberly A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity has been a focus of medical and public health attention for decades; however, a relative paucity of information exists regarding the management of obesity in the geriatric population. It is known that standard, young adult recommendations to manage weight cannot be applied directly to the older population due to the potential of adverse health outcomes, but the most effective strategies are controversial (Heintze et al., 20 l 0). The goal of weight management is unique for this population and poses a challenge for health care providers when managing, treating, and counseling patients. With the current trends of obesity and …

Memory Modulation In The Classroom: Selective Enhancement Of College Examination Performance By Arousal Induced After Lecture, Kristy A. Nielson, Timothy J. Arentsen
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Laboratory studies examining moderate physiological or emotional arousal induced after learning indicate that it enhances memory consolidation. Yet, no studies have yet examined this effect in an applied context. As such, arousal was induced after a college lecture and its selective effects were examined on later exam performance. Participants were divided into two groups who either watched a neutral video clip (n = 66) or an arousing video clip (n = 70) after lecture in a psychology course. The final examination occurred two weeks after the experimental manipulation. Only performance on the group of final exam items that …

Resourcefulness Training Intervention: Assessing Critical Parameters From Relocated Older Adults’ Perspectives, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Denise M. Matel-Anderson
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The population of American elders is increasing rapidly and relocation to retirement communities has been found to adversely affect their adjustment. This pilot study of 38 relocated elders evaluated, from elders’ perspectives, six critical parameters of a resourcefulness training (RT) intervention designed to help elders adjust to relocation. Within the context of Zauszniewski's theory of resourcefulness, a pre-/post-test design with random assignment to RT or to diversionary activities (DA) was used. Objective questionnaires measured demographic and relocation factors. An intervention evaluation questionnaire was designed and given to the relocated elders in order to assess the six critical parameters—necessity, acceptability, feasibility, …

Insight Into The Parenthood Paradox: Mental Health Outcomes Of Intensive Mothering, Holly H. Schiffrin, Kathryn Rizzo, Miriam Liss
Insight Into The Parenthood Paradox: Mental Health Outcomes Of Intensive Mothering, Holly H. Schiffrin, Kathryn Rizzo, Miriam Liss
Psychological Science Articles
Though people often report wanting to have children because they think it will make them happier, much research suggests that parenting is associated with decreased well-being. Other studies have found that parenting is related to increased life satisfaction. The goal of this study was to provide insight into this paradox by investigating the relationship between a specific way of parenting, intensive parenting, and maternal mental health. An online survey was completed by 181 mothers with children ages 5 and under. Intensive mothering beliefs correlated with several negative mental health outcomes. Controlling for perceived family social support, the belief that women …

BACKGROUND: Defects in the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (LRP-1) and p-glycoprotein (Pgp) clearance of amyloid beta (Aβ) from brain are thought to contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD). We have recently shown that induction of systemic inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) results in impaired efflux of Aβ from the brain. The same treatment also impairs Pgp function. Here, our aim is to determine which physiological routes of Aβ clearance are affected following systemic inflammation, including those relying on LRP-1 and Pgp function at the blood-brain barrier.
METHODS: CD-1 mice aged between 6 and 8 weeks were treated with 3 intraperitoneal injections …

Japanese Society (Silver Market?): Exceptionalism in Socio-Economic Sense?
What You See is Not What it is in Japan! This question was my Japanese colleagues and informants confronting me, and I concur with them as I completing this brief…. Perhaps this synopsis could help to realize the limited understanding of we have on another Asia society (despite frequent travels and information exchange in the mobile-Internet age), particularly the enigma about Japanese society’s traditionalism embedded into its supra-modernization trajectories of socio-economic development since 1868!

Older Consumers In Malaysia : Spending Pattern, Leisure Activities And Consumption Preferences, Fon Sim Ong
APIAS-TSAO-ILC Symposium for Junior Researchers on Active Ageing 2012
This paper brings consumption activities into the domain of active ageing by proposing that consumption process engages older people physically, socially, and emotionally in line with the concept of active ageing. In Malaysia as in elsewhere in Asia, the number of older adults is growing and the attractiveness of this market segment is expected to grow in the years to come since the newer cohorts of older consumers have higher levels of educational achievement and income, and adopt a lifestyle that is different from their parents. In spite of this, marketers have largely overlooked this market segment.

Dependency in old age is commonly linked to declining health and financial resources and thus, older persons have to rely on family members for support. Nonetheless, family support has been found to vary widely by coresidence status. The purpose of this study is to determine the contribution of co-residence status and selected demographic variables in predicting the likelihood of older persons receiving financial and/or non-financial support from children. A sub-sample of 1,273 older persons aged 60 years and above was obtained from a nationwide survey in Malaysia in 2010. Respondents’ response on the types of support received from children were …

The aging population in the Philippines has grown to over six million in 2011. This increase translates to an increase in family expenditures, with care of old adults being regarded more of a family rather than a state responsibility in the country. Transitions occurring within the Filipino family, such as increased local and foreign migration, or the growth of single-person households, will likewise result in changes in care giving arrangements for the Filipino elderly. Research studies have found that active participation addresses caregiving costs and concerns currently being faced by Filipino families. By engaging actively, old adults are able to …
