Asian Hedge Funds In A Risk-On, Risk-Off World, Melvyn Teo Oct 2012

Asian Hedge Funds In A Risk-On, Risk-Off World, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We analyze the performance of Asia-focused and Asia-based funds in risk-on and risk-off periods between 2002 and 2011. We find that Asian hedge funds, like their US and European counterparts, deliver equity-like payoffs with bond-like risk. They generate returns that are roughly in line with the equity markets in risk-on and neutral states of the world. While their returns do not dominate those of US Treasuries in risk-off situations, they generally outperform the equity market by a significant margin. Indeed, their risk-adjusted returns in riskoff states are on par if not higher than their risk-adjusted returns in risk-on states. Of …

We Make The Spring Rolls, They Make Their Own Rules: Filipina Domestic Workers’ Fight For Labor Rights In New York City And Los Angeles, Ariella Rotramel

Gender, Sexuality, and Intersectionality Faculty Publications

This article provides a multidimensional examination of Filipina domestic workers’ efforts to promote workers’ rights nationally and globally. Through their own experiences as transnational workers, Filipina activists were able to translate their knowledge of labor dynamics into practical and effective tactics such as the demand for labor contracts as an industry standard. Combining ethnographic research and interviews conducted with New York– based Filipina domestic worker activists with primary and secondary sources from Los Angeles, recent advocacy work in New York is compared with efforts in Los Angeles and California more broadly. Key points of comparison—demographics and organizing histories, geography and …

United States Flood Control Policy: The Incomplete Transition From The Illusion Of Total Protection To Risk Management, A. Dan Tarlock Oct 2012

United States Flood Control Policy: The Incomplete Transition From The Illusion Of Total Protection To Risk Management, A. Dan Tarlock

All Faculty Scholarship

Until the mid-twentieth century, the story of modern flood control was the transition from adaptation to the inevitable to an expectation that government would provide maximum flood prevention and generous post-disaster relief for floodplain dwellers. For the last sixty years or so, the story has been the growing recognition, especially as the understanding of climate change has increased, that the goal of maximum protection is unobtainable because flood damage is an inevitable risk that can only be managed, but never totally avoided. Thus, we are now making the transition to the idea that we must manage floodplains through a combination …

Coyote Use, Migration Duration And Remittances, David Ortmeyer, Michael A. Quinn Oct 2012

Coyote Use, Migration Duration And Remittances, David Ortmeyer, Michael A. Quinn

Economics Faculty Publications

The migration of Mexican immigrants to the U.S. is one of the largest bilateral migration flows in the world and remittances from these immigrants represent a crucial source of income for Mexican households. As the United States tightens controls on illegal migration, this may impact both migration durations and remittances. Tighter borders increase crossing costs, often because migrants need to pay smugglers (coyotes). Using data from the Mexican Migration Project, we find that higher crossing costs increase the probability of remitting, the remittance rate and the duration of stay as undocumented workers pay off the crossing debt. If immigrants did …

The Contact Period Of Central Peten, Guatemala In Color, Timothy W. Pugh, Leslie G. Cecil Oct 2012

The Contact Period Of Central Peten, Guatemala In Color, Timothy W. Pugh, Leslie G. Cecil

Faculty Publications

When Bernal Díaz del Castillo passed by Nojpeten with Hernán Cortés in 1525, he remarked upon the Itza capital’s brilliant whiteness, even from a great distance (Jones 1998:69). However had he stood in the central plaza, he would have discerned that the sun’s reflection eclipsed artifacts and architecture of a variety of colors. The archaeological record is frequently similarly whitewashed by our focus upon form, weight, and distribution. Nevertheless, color helped imbue the Contact period (AD 1525-1697) world of the Maya of the Petén lakes region of Guatemala with significance. This paper investigates the colors of ritual paraphernalia encountered in …

Housing Indeterminacy: Responsive Design For Diverse And Changing Households, Mark Sousa Oct 2012

Housing Indeterminacy: Responsive Design For Diverse And Changing Households, Mark Sousa

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This project hopes to create a new outlook on the future of housing design. Ray Forrest wrote, “The pace of demographic change need not be that dynamic to outpace the capacity of markets or states to provide appropriate dwellings in appropriate locations. […] Dwelling placement or adaptation is always likely to lag.”2 The preceding statement reflects the belief that housing is static and rigid, and that dwelling replacement or major structural adaptation is necessary to accommodate a continually evolving population. On the contrary, responsive housing can release significant pressure on housing systems by anticipating change and providing a lower cost …

School As Community Center: Redefining The Relationship Between The Community And The School In Minsk, Belarus, Kate Talkachova

Architecture Thesis Prep

"A society that values education should place emphasis on the facilities and incorporate in them the values and progress, not blindly stick to the traditional. For a country fighting to regain its identity, it is important that the divisions between the neighborhoods are blurred and a sense of a whole is created. With the school as community center, education remains the central focus, as well as provides the necessary link to the surrounding neighborhoods, becoming more than just a physical center, but an activity center as well."

"They Are Destroying Our Futures": Sexual Violence Against Girls In Zambia's Schools, Women And Law In Southern Africa Trust-Zambia, Cornell Law School. Avon Global Center For Women And Justice, Cornell Law School. International Human Rights Clinic

Avon Global Center for Women and Justice and Dorothea S. Clarke Program in Feminist Jurisprudence

This report examines the problem of sexual violence against girls in Zambian schools. In Zambia, many girls are raped, sexually abused, harassed, and assaulted by teachers and male classmates. They are also subjected to sexual harassment and attack while travelling to and from school. Such abuse is a devastating and often overlooked manifestation of the gender-based violence that occurs in numerous settings in Zambia and other countries throughout the world.

This report explores these issues from an international human rights perspective, drawing upon extensive desk research and interviews with 105 schoolgirls and many other stakeholders in Zambia’s Lusaka Province. The …

Geography

Landscape connectivity, the extent to which a landscape facilitates the movements of organisms and their genes, faces critical threats from both fragmentation and habitat loss. Many conservation efforts focus on protecting and enhancing connectivity to offset the impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation on biodiversity conservation, and to increase the resilience of reserve networks to potential threats associated with climate change. Loss of connectivity can reduce the size and quality of available habitat, impede and disrupt movement (including dispersal) to new habitats, and affect seasonal migration patterns. These changes can lead, in turn, to detrimental effects for populations and species, …

Una Exploracion De La Potencial Del Turismo En La Lucha Contra La Pobreza En America Latina, Robertico Croes

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The poverty has been a phenomenom that has delayed and transformed the latinoamericam societies. One of each three persons that live in Latinoamerica is considerate poor, qualifier that makes reference to those people that do not have sufficient resources to satisfy their basic needs. Because of that, the present article pretends to pose the tourism activity as an alternative to figth the poverty on developing countries, this because the tourism generates employemet, currency, incomes to the governments and business opportunities. So this work is aimed to research the empirical relation between international tourism, economic growth, the reduction of poverty and …

From Oblivion To Memory: A Blueprint For The Amnesty, Mark A. Drumbl Oct 2012

From Oblivion To Memory: A Blueprint For The Amnesty, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

This Review Essay examines Mark Freeman’s thoughtful book, Necessary Evils: Amnesties and the Search for Justice. One of the book’s core arguments is that amnesties from criminal prosecution, however unpalatable to liberal legalist sensibilities, should not be entirely purged from the toolbox of post-conflict transitions. Although advancing this argument, Freeman also struggles with it, and ultimately builds a very restrained and heavily technocratic defense of the amnesty. This Review Essay weighs this argument, among others, on its own terms and also within the context of recent events that post-date the book’s publication. The result is a vibrant exposition of …

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews Oct 2012

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews

SNS Master's Theses

Habitat composition and complexity can play an important role in structuring populations of marine organisms. However, the interactions between the physical and biological landscape and their combined effect on marine population dynamics are not well understood. In this study, I explored the role of habitat complexity (three-dimensional habitat structure) on habitat composition (abundance and distribution of habitat types) and their combined role in structuring genetic variation in populations of the black surfperch Embiotoca jacksoni, within Monterey Bay, California. Black surfperch have no pelagic larval stage, limited adult dispersal, and associate strongly with benthic habitat making them an excellent model system …

“Municipal Welfare” And The Neoliberal Prison Town: The Political Economy Of Prison Closures In New York State, Andrea Morrell Oct 2012

“Municipal Welfare” And The Neoliberal Prison Town: The Political Economy Of Prison Closures In New York State, Andrea Morrell

Publications and Research

Since 2010, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has closed nine state prisons for adults. For the prison towns that dot diversely rural and urban places of New York —each uniquely tied to the maintenance of mass incarceration— the closure of a state prison marks the end of an infusion of state capital constructed and construed quite explicitly as projects of economic development in the 1980's. After decades of growing corrections budgets and expanding prisons across the United States, why is New York closing prisons now? Tracing the history of prison growth and urban governance in prison towns, I posit …
