Influence Of Relictual Species On The Morphology Of A Hybridizing Oak Complex: An Analysis Of The Quercus X Undulata Complex In The Four Corners Region, Ross A. Mccauley, Brenna J. Christie, Erik L. Ireland, Rae A. Landers, Haley R. Nichols, Matthew T. Schendel

Western North American Naturalist

The genus Quercus represents an important component of the scrublands and low forests of the Four Corners area of northeastern Arizona, southeastern Utah, southwestern Colorado, and northwestern New Mexico. The area is dominated by the widespread Quercus gambelii, although relictual and marginal populations of Q. turbinella and Q. havardii are also present. Hybridization among these 3 species is common, leading to much variability in phenotypic traits, and this hybridization forms part of the widespread complex of hybrid oaks recognized as Q. x undulata.Multivariate analysis of leaf morphology was performed in 9 populations, representing the various taxa and levels of …

Molecular Evolution And Phylogenetics Of Rodent Malaria Parasites, Ricardo S. Ramiro, Sarah E. Reece, Darren J. Obbard Nov 2012

Molecular Evolution And Phylogenetics Of Rodent Malaria Parasites, Ricardo S. Ramiro, Sarah E. Reece, Darren J. Obbard

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Background: Over the last 6 decades, rodent Plasmodium species have become key model systems for understanding the basic biology of malaria parasites. Cell and molecular parasitology have made much progress in identifying genes underpinning interactions between malaria parasites, hosts, and vectors. However, little attention has been paid to the evolutionary genetics of parasites, which provides context for identifying potential therapeutic targets and for understanding the selective forces shaping parasites in natural populations. Additionally, understanding the relationships between species, subspecies, and strains, is necessary to maximize the utility of rodent malaria parasites as medically important infectious disease models, and for …

The Boomerang Effect: Asia's Casino Industry Growth Can "Fly Back" To Benefit Las Vegas, Jonathan Galaviz Nov 2012

The Boomerang Effect: Asia's Casino Industry Growth Can "Fly Back" To Benefit Las Vegas, Jonathan Galaviz

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Boomerangs are an interesting invention. These remarkable devices can be thrown into the sky, for long distances, and then they do something amazing: they fly back to the thrower. Metaphorically speaking, the Las Vegas-based casino resort industry has thrown its "boomerang" to places like Singapore, Macau, and many other casino markets throughout the world over the last decade, with great success. Of course, many question whether this "boomerang" will indeed fly back to the thrower in the form of economic benefits. In this paper, I will lay out some key strategic concepts that argue that Las Vegas is indeed benefitting …

Communicating Strategically – Talking Less, Targeting Better. Qualitative Study On Corporate Communication‘S Learning In Leading Global Companies, Lukasz M. Bocheneki, Sam Blili

UBT International Conference

Companies need to communicate strategically in order to maintain dialogue and relationships with their stakeholders. In the crowded media and social media space the messages disappear in the noise generated by multiple actors. Therefore, to be heard the enterprises need to consider their communication strategically. It is not about the amount of information, it is about right targeting and usage of the right tools and channels. Social media allowed the companies to communicate directly with their stakeholders and customers. Different channels can address different stakeholders. This study focuses on a qualitative assessment of the learning patterns and profiles among 60 …

Reclaiming ‗The New Public Spaces‘ Outdoor Advertising & The Resistance Of The Albanian Consumer Movements, Ana Kekezi, Drita Kruja Nov 2012

Reclaiming ‗The New Public Spaces‘ Outdoor Advertising & The Resistance Of The Albanian Consumer Movements, Ana Kekezi, Drita Kruja

UBT International Conference

This study investigated and contributed empirically and theoretically the Albanian consumer resistance movements toward the invading of the public spaces by advertising. The outdoor advertising, even in emerging countries as Albania, is inescapable and has grabbed the consumer and his incapability on avoiding it. The methodological considerations that directed this research was the interpretive paradigm using within-methods triangulation. The impacts of free trade effects on consumer culture and proper spaces in developing countries has resulted as a significant one, through the process of commercial usurpation of public spaces. The study aimed to contribute in the theorical literature on the consumer …

Water Resources Systems Planning And Management, Piro Zoga, Aida Bode, Ramiz Balla, Nevton Kodhelaj, Spartak Kucaj Nov 2012

Water Resources Systems Planning And Management, Piro Zoga, Aida Bode, Ramiz Balla, Nevton Kodhelaj, Spartak Kucaj

UBT International Conference

The most fundamental human needs of water are for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. In order to fulfill these needs, the quality of the water used should cause no risk to human health. The quality of the water in nature also affects the condition of ecosystems all living organisms depend on. At the same time, humans use water bodies as convenient sinks for the disposal of domestic, industrial and agricultural wastewaters. This, of course, degrades the quality of those water bodies. Water resources management involves the monitoring and management of water quality as much as the monitoring and management of …

An Approach For Integration Of Sustainable Transport Planning Indicators, Ylber Limani, Binak Beqaj Nov 2012

An Approach For Integration Of Sustainable Transport Planning Indicators, Ylber Limani, Binak Beqaj

UBT International Conference

This paper describes the factors that need to be considered when selecting indicators for sustainable transport planning, principles for selecting indicators, and represents an indicator integration methodology. Indicators are very important components for various assessments due to proper decision making, and the end results depend on the accuracy of selecting, integrating and measuring them. The sensitivity ratio between decision makers and planners concerning sustainable transport planning indicators selection and application is not at a desired level and it needs to be improved. This may be as a result of lack of sufficient methodologies for making indicators more practical and understandable …

Diseconomies Of Scale In The Hedge Fund Industry, Melvyn Teo Nov 2012

Diseconomies Of Scale In The Hedge Fund Industry, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

How does fund size impact fund performance in the hedge fund industry? We find unsurprisingly that fund size crimps both raw and risk-adjusted fund returns for the average hedge fund. An increase in fund assets under management from US$20m to US$1bn decreases fund alpha by 2.04 percent per year. However, significant variation exists across funds when funds are grouped by investment strategy and region. Equity long/short, event driven, and macro funds are susceptible to capacity constraints while fixed income and managed futures funds are largely immune to such concerns. Our finding that capacity issues impact macro fund performance raises fresh …

Did The Community Reinvestment Act (Cra) Lead To Risky Lending?, Sumit Agarwal, Effi Benmelech, Nittai Bergman, Amit Seru

Kreisman Working Paper Series in Housing Law and Policy

Yes, it did. We use exogenous variation in banks' incentives to conform to the standards of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) around regulatory exam dates to trace out the effect of the CRA on lending activity. Our empirical strategy compares lending behavior of banks undergoing CRA exams within a given census tract in a given month to the behavior of banks operating in the same census tractmonth that do not face these exams. We find that adherence to the act led to riskier lending by banks: in the six quarters surrounding the CRA exams lending is elevated on average by …

Small-To-Medium Enterprises And Economic Growth: A Comparative Study Of Clustering Techniques, Karim K. Mardaneh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in regional (non-metropolitan) areas are considered when economic planning may require large data sets and sophisticated clustering techniques. The economic growth of regional areas was investigated using four clustering algorithms. Empirical analysis demonstrated that the modified global k-means algorithm outperformed other algorithms.

Phylogeny And Evolutionary Patterns In The Dwarf Crayfish Subfamily (Decapoda: Cambarellinae), C. Pedraza-Lara, I. Doadrio, J. Breinholt, Keith A. Crandall Nov 2012

Phylogeny And Evolutionary Patterns In The Dwarf Crayfish Subfamily (Decapoda: Cambarellinae), C. Pedraza-Lara, I. Doadrio, J. Breinholt, Keith A. Crandall

Computational Biology Institute

The Dwarf crayfish or Cambarellinae, is a morphologically singular subfamily of decapod crustaceans that contains only one genus, Cambarellus. Its intriguing distribution, along the river basins of the Gulf Coast of United States (Gulf Group) and into Central México (Mexican Group), has until now lacked of satisfactory explanation. This study provides a comprehensive sampling of most of the extant species of Cambarellus and sheds light on its evolutionary history, systematics and biogeography. We tested the impact of Gulf Group versus Mexican Group geography on rates of cladogenesis using a maximum likelihood framework, testing different models of birth/extinction of lineages. We …

A World Englishes Study Of Korean University Students: Effects Of Pedagogy On Language Attitudes, Patrick Rousseau Nov 2012

A World Englishes Study Of Korean University Students: Effects Of Pedagogy On Language Attitudes, Patrick Rousseau

MA TESOL Collection

I examine the impact of raising awareness of World English varieties on the language attitudes of Korean university students. This study triangulated direct attitudinal measurements through the use of a 6-point Likert scale survey with indirect attitudinal measurements by employing a verbal guise test. The verbal guise test used recordings of representative speakers from six varieties of English: American, Chinese, Japanese, British, Saudi, and Korean English. Attitudinal measurements were taken pre and post a series of four 1½-hour practical English classes designed to raise awareness of world varieties, along with global trends in language use that highlight the importance of …

Neoliberal Globalization And The Politics Of Migration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Saul Tobias Ph.D. Nov 2012

Neoliberal Globalization And The Politics Of Migration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Saul Tobias Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Over the last few decades, many states in sub-Saharan Africa have adopted draconian anti-migrant policies, leaving refugees and migrants vulnerable to violence, harassment, and economic exploitation. These policies represent a shift from the relatively hospitable attitude shown by many African nations in the immediate post-colonial period. Explanations at the local level do not adequately explain the pervasiveness of these changes or why many developing states are now replicating the migration discourse and practices of the global north. Drawing on scholarship and data from a number of states in the region, including Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, this paper argues …

Ain't Ain't The Same No More, Glenn G. Dahlem Nov 2012

Ain't Ain't The Same No More, Glenn G. Dahlem

Word Ways

In a recent conversation with a British friend, he and I reflected on evolution of various English words. Both history and geography are factors in changing word definitions, we decided. For example, in England, the word "dame" means a distinguished lady, while in America, it's come to more or less mean any woman. Our conversation drifted to changes in respectability or grammatical correctness of given words. That topic leads to the inevitable--"ain't."

The University As A Gendered Organization: Effects On Management Type, Climate And Job Satisfaction, Margaret E. Crowder Nov 2012

The University As A Gendered Organization: Effects On Management Type, Climate And Job Satisfaction, Margaret E. Crowder

Dissertations

Numbers of women holding faculty positions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) remain low in university systems, despite gains women have made in achievement of advanced degrees. No one reason is clearly the culprit for the low numbers, though women in STEM have been shown to have more negative perceptions of climate, be more dissatisfied with their jobs, and have greater inclination to leave their positions than men.

As males comprise a majority of STEM employees, the masculine-genderedness of these organizations may create a more dissatisfactory work environment for women. This may, in turn, have negative impact on the …
