Free School Bus Service For Needy Children In Surabaya : Finding The Optimal Route Using Geographic Information System / Daniel Hary Prasetyo, Daniel Hary Prasetyo

Student Works (2010-2019)

Surabaya city, Indonesia, has a considerable number of unschooled children. Even though the Government has eliminated the tuition fee, the number of needy school aged children remains high because of additional schooling costs beyond the tuition fee. The Government tries to support the needy student population by donating money for books, uniforms, shoes, and other school supplies, and would also like to offer help by easing transportation costs. The distribution of upper school make the traveling length and traveling costs excessive, compared with lower level schools. This goal of this research is to provide a clear framework of methodology and …

Student Works (2010-2019)

A recent study in the Tatau-Bintulu area indicates that the Ransi Member which was originally dated as Upper Miocene to Pliocene (Kamaludin Hassan, 2004) is part of the Upper Eocene to Upper Oligocene Tatau Formation. This finding is inconsistent with that of Liechti, et.al (1960) who proposed that it was equivalent to the Middle to Upper Miocene Begrih Formation while Ismail (2000) proposed that it was equivalent to the Upper Miocene to Pliocene Balingian Formation. The study area is located in a horst bounded by two parallel NE-SW trending faults 4.5 km apart. The gently folded Ransi Member that is …

Student Works (2010-2019)

The purpose of the present study is twofold. Firstly it seeks to find the generic structures that are inherent in the introduction sections of entrepreneurship research articles and secondly it investigates the role of experiential metafunction and its distribution in realization of obligatory generic elements that are found in the data. The approach applied is a combination of Halliday and Hasan’s (1989) model of genre analysis to find the generic structure potential (GSP) of the introduction sections as well as Halliday’s (1994) model of transitivity analysis to find the typicality of the process types and their contribution in the realization …

Sabah Malay Dialect : Phonological Differentiation In Social Context / Jane Wong Kon Ling, Jane Kon Ling Wong

Student Works (2010-2019)

Sabah Malay Dialect (SMD) or ‘the speech of Sabah’ is used widely as a lingua franca in interaction between different ethnic groups, and within single groups in Sabah. The broad sociolinguistic setting of the people of Sabah has influenced the formation of SMD. This is enhanced by migrations from Indonesia, the Philippines and other states in Malaysia. Consequently, the vast socio-cultural and socio-economic settings have resulted in language variations in SMD. SMD displays distinctiveness especially in its phonology compared to Standard Malay and other dialects. SMD is indeed a dialect in its own right as shown by this study. Adopting …

Narrative Environmental Ethics, Nature Writing, And Ecological Science As Tradition: Towards A Sponsoring Ground Of Concern, John Ryan Jan 2012

Narrative Environmental Ethics, Nature Writing, And Ecological Science As Tradition: Towards A Sponsoring Ground Of Concern, John Ryan

Research outputs 2012

Over the last 30 years, environmental philosophers and ecological researchers have turned their attention to the possibilities of narratives: the stories people tell about their lives in conjunction with the human and non-human agents they live with. An interest in narrative environmental ethics reflects a re-evaluation of canonical ecophilosophical texts. Works such as Paul W. Taylor’s Respect for Nature suggest an essentialist view of environmental ethics in which predetermined principles are imposed on places and situations. On the other hand, Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac combines first-person prose with science-based explanations of the “biotic pyramid” towards the development of …

Inclusion And Empowerment Of Export Processing Zone Women In Sri Lanka: Stakeholders Perceptions And Perspectives, Peter Hancock, Indika Edirisinghe Jan 2012

Inclusion And Empowerment Of Export Processing Zone Women In Sri Lanka: Stakeholders Perceptions And Perspectives, Peter Hancock, Indika Edirisinghe

Research outputs 2012

The vast majority of research on women who work in Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and in Sri Lanka focuses on the ‘lived experiences’ of the women themselves. The other major source of research with a similar focus comes from macro-economic perspectives, focusing on policy and economic rationale behind the emergence of EPZs and global export-oriented manufacturing in general. This paper provides insights into the issues of empowerment and inclusion of Sri Lankan EPZ workers, but does so from the perspective of 22 stakeholders in Sri Lanka who have unique insights to offer. The stakeholders were factory managers; senior public administrators; …

Which To Become? Encountering Fungi In Australian Poetry, John Ryan Jan 2012

Which To Become? Encountering Fungi In Australian Poetry, John Ryan

Research outputs 2012

As a largely unexplored group of organisms, fungi are ecologically complex members of the Australian biota. Fungi represent non-human alterity and interstitiality-neither animal not plant, beautiful yet evanescent, slimy and lethal, and eliding scientific categorisations. Donna Haraway's notion of "companion species" and Anna Tsing's "arts of inclusion" remind us that sensory entanglements are intrinsic to human-fungi relations. Drawing conceptually from Haraway and Tsing, this paper will examine examples of poetry from John Shaw Neilson, Jan Owen, Douglas Stewart, Geoffrey Dutton, Caroline Caddy, Michael Dransfield, Philip Hodgins, Jaime Grant and John Kinsella that represent sensory involvements with fungi based in smell, …

Self-Revelation In An Online Health Community: Exploring Issues Around Co-Presence For Vulnerable Members, Leesa Costello, Cynthia Witney, Lelia Green, Vanessa Bradshaw

Research outputs 2012

Problem: This paper addresses the implications of working with vulnerable groups in the context of an online health community when members move from co-presence online to co-presence offline. Theoretical Approach: The case study presented in this paper challenges the expectation that self-revelations are usually more common in online environments because of the anonymity and comfort experienced there. Methodology: Taking as its example the events in a research project designed to investigate the relative features of online communities and social network sites by using a ‘netnographic’ approach, this paper examines the introduction of live chat sessions with a view to building …

Passive Flora? Reconsidering Nature's Agency Through Human-Plant Studies (Hps), John Ryan Jan 2012

Passive Flora? Reconsidering Nature's Agency Through Human-Plant Studies (Hps), John Ryan

Research outputs 2012

Plants have been—and, for reasons of human sustenance and creative inspiration, will continue to be—centrally important to societies globally. Yet, plants—including herbs, shrubs, and trees—are commonly characterized in Western thought as passive, sessile, and silent automatons lacking a brain, as accessories or backdrops to human affairs. Paradoxically, the qualities considered absent in plants are those employed by biologists to argue for intelligence in animals. Yet an emerging body of research in the sciences and humanities challenges animal-centred biases in determining consciousness, intelligence, volition, and complex communication capacities amongst living beings. In light of recent theoretical developments in our understandings of …

Assessment Of Climate Change Effect On Water Harvesting Structures In Rainfed Regions: Geospatial Data Mining Approach, Sreedhar Nallan, Leisa Armstrong Jan 2012

Assessment Of Climate Change Effect On Water Harvesting Structures In Rainfed Regions: Geospatial Data Mining Approach, Sreedhar Nallan, Leisa Armstrong

Research outputs 2012

Advances in the Information and Technologies (ICT) may assist researchers in the assessment of watershed development programmes by developing better visualization understanding of their impacts. GIS based research studies utilizing remote sensing images can facilitate in identifying the potential zones for watershed development and enable improved ground water resources. Effective watershed management is dependent on a number of factors such as demography, climate, soil, land use and topography and these are affected by changing climatic conditions. For example, changes in rainfall intensity and volume in rain fed areas can influence the effectiveness of the placement of watershed structures. Existing methods …

Holocene Arroyo Cut And Fills Cycles, South-Central Washington, Matthew Ian Durkee Jan 2012

Holocene Arroyo Cut And Fills Cycles, South-Central Washington, Matthew Ian Durkee

All Master's Theses

Ephemeral streams have cut deeply incised arroyos into alluvial and eolian sediments in many of the watersheds within the Yakima Training Center (YTC) military reservation, south-central Washington. The most recent channel incision episode along Selah Creek is primarily attributed to multiple failures of an irrigation reservoir dam during the winters of 1909 and 1910. The modern arroyo exposed evidence of at least one previous episode of arroyo incision to a depth of ~4 m that occurred just prior to 1530- 1340 cal yr BP. Filling of this paleo-arroyo with fine to coarse grained sand ceased between 650-103 cal yr BP. …

Applying Gis Metrics To Determine Degree Of Glacial Modification In Mountainous Landscapes, Carl Delbert Swanson Ii Jan 2012

Applying Gis Metrics To Determine Degree Of Glacial Modification In Mountainous Landscapes, Carl Delbert Swanson Ii

All Master's Theses

The ability to quantitatively assess the degree of glaciation in mountainous areas can be a powerful tool in unraveling the evolution of landscapes, and provide key insights in regions where field research is difficult. Here we determine, test, and apply metrics that assess the relative degree of past glacial modification in mountainous landscapes. Results show that slope results can be used to quantitatively assess the degree to which an area is modified by glaciation. In particular, analysis of basins using slope frequency distribution curves and slope vs. elevation plots capture steeper slopes, flatter valley bottoms, cirques, and arêtes of glaciated …

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen Jan 2012

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines a subset of Children of Alcoholics, whom I call Geographic Cure Children, who cope with both fermented parenting (as I have termed it) AND transient schooling. Viewed by schools and school systems simply as “highly mobile” students, their frequent school changes tell only part of the story. Geographic Cure Children arrive at their newest classrooms bearing the heavy burdens of emotional trauma and dark secrets about the Life Erratic. However, due to frequent mobility, their access to help or support is sketchy at best. Through currere, I employ autobiographical and psychoanalytic lenses to explore the intersection of …

Following A Sigmoid Progression: Some Jurisprudential And Pragmatic Considerations Regarding Territorial Acquisition Among Nation-States, John C. Duncan, Jr. Jan 2012

Following A Sigmoid Progression: Some Jurisprudential And Pragmatic Considerations Regarding Territorial Acquisition Among Nation-States, John C. Duncan, Jr.

Journal Publications

This article analyzes methods and doctrines used by States to acquire territories. The role of the United Nations in resolving disputes between nations and the inhabitants directly affected by the disputes is also addressed, including the jurisdictional, jurisprudential, and practical considerations of territorial acquisition. Finally, traditional territorial acquisition doctrines are applied to extraterrestrial and outer space acquisition. As Western civilization etched out territories and borders across its known world, international norms of diplomatic behavior appeared in the form of customs. These customs eventually grew into codifications, which in turn grew into the elaborate international system enjoyed and protested today. Laws …

Fifty More Constitutions, Mary Whisner

Librarians' Articles

The U.S. Constitution may get all the attention, but as Ms. Whisner points out, state constitutional law is also important to legal researchers. Unfortunately, the sources for researching state constitutions are more limited and difficult to find. She describes a web site created by the Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington School of Law that makes available sources of Washington State constitutional history.

Ring Maps For Spatial Visualization Of Multivariate Epidemiological Data, Sarah E. Battersby, John E. Stewart, Ana Lopez-De Fede, Kevin C. Remington

Publications

Epidemiological research often involves the visual exploration of numerous attributes to help discern patterns between health and characteristics of the physical, socioeconomic, or built environment. Unfortunately, many of the multivariate mapping techniques discussed throughout the cartographic literature can be challenging to create or interpret—particularly for individuals without a cartographic background. In this paper, we present a new style of multivariate map—the ring map—to aid in basic visualization of multivariate datasets. For purposes of example, we focus on the use of the ring map style for exploring county-level epidemiological data for the state of South Carolina to examine patterns of age, …
