NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
This article discusses how climate change is already having serious effects on El Salvador. Despite the country's relatively small share of global carbon dioxide output, El Salvador is experiencing the compounded effects of climate change--rising sea levels as well as shifting weather patterns that disrupt economic livelihoods, such as farming. In addition, the article discusses how the Funes administration is addressing the changes. These approaches range from implementing school curriculum on climate change to increased spending on infrastructural improvements.

Biology Faculty Articles
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an epithelial malignancy facilitated by Epstein-Barr Virus infection. Here we resolve the major genetic influences for NPC incidence using a genome-wide association study (GWAS), independent cohort replication, and high-resolution molecular HLA class I gene typing including 4,055 study participants from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangdong province of southern China. We detect and replicate strong association signals involving SNPs, HLA alleles, and amino acid (aa) variants across the major histocompatibility complex-HLA-A, HLA –B, and HLA -C class I genes (PHLA-A-aa-site-62 = 7.4×10−29; P HLA-B-aa-site-116 = 6.5×10−19; P HLA-C-aa-site-156 = 6.8×10 …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The focus of this thesis is to determine whether an association rule mining appraoch could be used to uncover associations between socioeconomic variables and childhood lead poisoning in the eastern Unied States. The association rule analysis was able to discover three prominent variables that were linked with childhood lead toxicity. Counties with high rates of holder housing, high single female head of householders, and a low proportion of Hispanic residents were found to be associated with higher rates of childhood lead poisoning. Geographic information systems (GIS) was utilized to visually illustrate the spatial distribution of each of the three association …

Arts And Education: An Investigation Into The Impact Of The Arts Academy On High School Students, Nigel Sangster
Theses and Dissertations
The broad topical area of my research study involved an investigation of the impact of the arts academy on the students of Cooper Ruth Performing and Fine Arts Middle-High School (pseudonym), using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Being a proponent of the arts, one of the premises of my research was to bring about a greater sense of awareness in my school and school district, that the arts were not "frills" in the educational processes of children (Perrin, 1994). Focus was given to various strands of the arts disciplines in my efforts to substantiate the significance of the overarching question …

The Hook: Stories, Jenny Miranda Lederer
The Hook: Stories, Jenny Miranda Lederer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The nine pieces of short fiction in this collection feature a group ofcharacters in transition: some caught between the easy magic of youth and the often painful discovery of complexity, others between deliberate stasis and queasy action. Their decisions in these moments will prove pivotal, with ramifications that echo for the remainder of their lives. The settings of these stories range the length of the East Coast from New Hampshire to Florida, often visiting places where the border between the wild and the tame becomes blurred: a campground, a rural farmhouse, a stretch of moonlit beach with the boundless ocean …

This article explores the seminal United States Supreme Court decision of United States v. Smith (1820). This article is the first to explore the context within which the case arose, as well as the circumstances of the case itself. In addition to the details of the case, the story of the men prosecuted for their cruise aboard the vessel known as the Irresistible in the late spring and early summer of 1819 also offers a …
International Order After The Financial Crisis, Harold James
International Order After The Financial Crisis, Harold James
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
How is international order built, and how is it legitimate, in a world in which political and economic foundations are rapidly shifting? What are the consequences of the rise of major new powers for the structure and the functioning of the international system? Great wars or great financial crises have in the past led to disorientation about the moral foundations of society, domestically and internationally. The paper examines parallels with the Great Depression, and in particular the weakening of multilateralism and of small political units, and the strengthening of large powers with hegemonic claims. The paper then turns to an …
