An Object-Based Image Analysis Of Treated And Untreated Pinyon And Juniper Woodlands Across The Great Basin, April Hulet Mar 2012

An Object-Based Image Analysis Of Treated And Untreated Pinyon And Juniper Woodlands Across The Great Basin, April Hulet

Theses and Dissertations

Land managers need to rapidly assess vegetation composition and bare ground to effectively evaluate, manage, and restore shrub steppe communities that have been encroached by pinyon and juniper (P-J) trees. A major part of this process is assessing where to apply mechanical and prescribed fire treatments to reduce fuel loads and maintain or restore sagebrush steppe rangelands. Geospatial technologies, particularly remote sensing, offers an efficient option to assess rangelands across multiple spatial scales while reducing the need for ground-based sampling measurements. High-spatial resolution color-infrared imagery (0.06-m pixels) was acquired for sagebrush steppe communities invaded by P-J trees at five sites …

Kosovo Government Buildings : A Future Out Of City Center Location 2015-2025 : [Presentation Given February 29, 2012], Anjeza Alaj

Theses

Based on Kosovo’s Government budget, over the past ten years an average rate of 2.30 % of total capital investment went to the maintenance and renovation of government office buildings (see figure below). At this rate for the period of 2015-2025, approximately €144 Million will be budgeted for Government buildings. This capstone project has assessed long term tentative plans to accommodate government institutions. In a new site and out of city center location it considered the future planning for permanent accommodation of civil servants out of the city center. The total cost for this new site is estimated to be …

On The American Paradox Of Laissez Faire And Mass Incarceration, Bernard E. Harcourt Mar 2012

On The American Paradox Of Laissez Faire And Mass Incarceration, Bernard E. Harcourt

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In The Illusion of Free Markets (Harvard 2011), Professor Bernard Harcourt analyzes the evolution of a distinctly American paradox: in the country that has done the most to promote the idea of a hands-off government, we run the single largest prison complex in the entire world. Harcourt traces this paradox back to the eighteenth century and demonstrates how the presumption of government incompetence in economic affairs has been coupled with that of government legitimacy in the realm of policing and punishing. Harcourt shows how these linked presumptions have fueled the expansion of the carceral sphere in the nineteenth and twentieth …

Virtual Learning In New Zealand: Achieving Maturity, Michael K. Barbour, Derek Wenmoth, Niki Davis Mar 2012

Virtual Learning In New Zealand: Achieving Maturity, Michael K. Barbour, Derek Wenmoth, Niki Davis

Education Faculty Publications

This proposal describes a study into the development of virtual learning in New Zealand, specifically the obstacles that e-learning clusters face or have faced in their journey to sustainability and maturity through the lens of the Learning Communities Online Handbook. Using a variety of data collection methods, the researchers identified three common barriers, including a lack of a coherent vision, difficulty in securing the necessary funding and resources, and a lack of collaboration and cooperation within and between clusters. Based on these findings, it is recommended that individual e-learning clusters develop specific strategies to encourage greater collaboration between clusters and …

Critical Reflections: Interpretation And Analysis Of Japanese Women’S Settlement Experiences, Atsushi Takeda Mar 2012

Critical Reflections: Interpretation And Analysis Of Japanese Women’S Settlement Experiences, Atsushi Takeda

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, I discuss how I came to call into question the way in which I interpreted interview data in my dissertation, which investigated the migration and settlement experience of Japanese women who are married to Australian men and reside in Australia. Through critical reflections, I realized the way in which the positionality of researchers and their experience, values, and beliefs may influence interpretation of data. The translation process of the interview data reminded me of the similarity with the data analysis process. I illustrate how such possible impact changed the meaning of data through sharing my reflections.

If You Build It, Will They Come? Building The Collaborative Infrastructure And The Ohiolink Collaborates Toolbox, Barbara J. Strauss, Margaret Maurer, Julie Gedeon

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

This research examines how libraries are collaborating, why libraries collaborate, and seeks the environmental conditions that foster successful cross-institutional collaborations. The Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) Consortium’s CollaboraTeS Project is examined, to inventory expertise and needs within the OhioLINK community and the members’ willingness to share, barter or contract their expertise with other OhioLINK institutions. This is followed by an examination of a sample of North American collaborative projects to identify environmental conditions that foster collaborations in North American libraries. A brief survey within the OhioLINK environment was then conducted that validated anecdotal evidence that the CollaboraTeS Toolbox has …

Toward A More Phronetic Leisure Science, Daniel Dustin, Keri Schwab, Jeff Rose Mar 2012

Toward A More Phronetic Leisure Science, Daniel Dustin, Keri Schwab, Jeff Rose

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

In this essay, we examine the assumptions underlying natural science, social science, and the humanities. More specifically, we suggest that social science in general and leisure science in particular be guided by a different set of assumptions than those guiding natural science and the humanities. Drawing on the Aristotelian idea of phronesis, we propose that value rationality more so than instrumental rationality guide social scientific inquiry, and that social science in general, and leisure science in particular, be viewed as a bridge between natural science and the humanities.

California, Edward S. Renwick Mar 2012

California, Edward S. Renwick

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

What generalizations can be drawn from this combination of history, geography and demographics, and the shared authority of statewide agencies and powerful local agencies? The majority of California voters live in the coastal plain. They, generally speaking, are not favorably inclined toward the oil and gas industry. As a result, the statewide agencies, with the exception of the DOGGR, tend not to be favorably inclined toward the oil and gas industry. The ranks of the DOGGR are filled with people who have come out of the oil and gas industry and thus, tend to be favorably inclined toward the industry. …

Addressing The Needs Of Self-Represented Litigants In The Canadian Justice System, Trevor C. W. Farrow, Diana Lowe, Bradley Albrecht, Heather Manweiller, Martha E. Simmons Mar 2012

Addressing The Needs Of Self-Represented Litigants In The Canadian Justice System, Trevor C. W. Farrow, Diana Lowe, Bradley Albrecht, Heather Manweiller, Martha E. Simmons

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

How can the Canadian justice system better assist self-represented litigants (SRLs) with their legal needs? There is a service gap that exists in the Canadian justice system between what SRLs need and what is currently being provided. The system needs to better address how SRLs understand, avoid, manage and resolve their legal issues. While the entire justice system has a role to play in understanding and addressing this question, courts and court administrators in particular have a central role to play. Some important efforts have begun to address the needs of SRLs. However, major challenges persist in providing adequate court …
