Dietary Heterogeneity Among Western Industrialized Countries Reflected In The Stable Isotope Ratios Of Human Hair., Luciano O. Valenzuela, Lesley A. Chesson, Gabriel J. Bowen, Thure E. Cerling, James R. Ehleringer

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Although the globalization of food production is often assumed to result in a homogenization of consumption patterns with a convergence towards a Western style diet, the resources used to make global food products may still be locally produced (glocalization). Stable isotope ratios of human hair can quantify the extent to which residents of industrialized nations have converged on a standardized diet or whether there is persistent heterogeneity and glocalization among countries as a result of different dietary patterns and the use of local food products. Here we report isotopic differences among carbon, nitrogen and sulfur isotope ratios of …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Educational Attainment, Jin Huang Mar 2012

Intergenerational Transmission Of Educational Attainment, Jin Huang

Center for Social Development Research

Intergenerational transmission of education from parents to children has been investigated extensively, and the parent-child correlation of schooling is about .46 in the US. a high intergenerational persistence of educational attainment is not only an indicator of educational inequality but also a barrier to equal opportunities in the labor market and beyond. This study uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to generate a sample of two cohorts of white children (’84 and ’94 cohorts), and examines whether intergenerational transmission of education varies by household economic resources, especially household assets. Results show that, in the ’94 cohort, …

Plant Species Richness And Species Area Relationships In A Florida Sandhill, Monica Ruth Downer Mar 2012

Plant Species Richness And Species Area Relationships In A Florida Sandhill, Monica Ruth Downer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Pine sandhill are integral pyrogenic communities in the southeastern United States. Though once widespread, habitat destruction, fire suppression and fragmentation have reduced the population to nearly 3%. It is important to learn as much as possible about these unique areas in order to implement best management practices to conserve and restore the existing populations of these communities.

Fire is central to the maintenance of pine sandhill communities and two conceptual hypothesis regarding burn frequency have come to light in maintaining the unique species composition and richness of these areas. The first is the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis which suggests that intermediate …

Environmental Science / Herbivory - Cornell University, Sarah J. Wright Mar 2012

Environmental Science / Herbivory - Cornell University, Sarah J. Wright

Data Curation Profiles Directory

This data curation profile addresses a data set generated from the study of the mechanisms and ecological consequences of plants’ induced responses to herbivore damage. The researcher’s goal is to better understand herbivore-induced changes in volatile organic compounds emitted by plants on pollinators. The data management needs concern both the deposit of his data into a repository and the format of his data. The researcher shared that he needs to develop standard procedures for deposit. He also expressed some concern about the accessibility of his data that is in a proprietary format if the format ever became obsolete. Additionally, the …

The Impacts Of Population Density, And State & National Litter Prevention Programs On Marine Debris, Melissa Rose Brogle Mar 2012

The Impacts Of Population Density, And State & National Litter Prevention Programs On Marine Debris, Melissa Rose Brogle

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Marine debris is improperly disposed of solid waste, also called litter, which is deposited in the marine environment (NOAA, 2010). Litter prevention techniques such as fines, cleanups, incentives, and others, can help to decrease litter, and ultimately decrease marine debris. This research analyzed 2000 and 2010 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) data obtained from The Ocean Conservancy to ascertain whether certain litter prevention techniques did reduce amounts and types of marine debris found in coastal areas. The litter prevention techniques analyzed included state bottle bills, voluntary monofilament fishing line recycling programs, and the Keep America Beautiful (KAB) cigarette butt litter prevention …

First-Year Experience Course: Problem Solving, Inquiry, And Integration, Kimberly H. Cowgill, Donald J. Orth, Eric P. Wiseman, Dean F. Stauffer

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

In an effort to address academic deficiencies outlined in recent studies, Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment redesigned its first-year experience class to fit their activities into three components of activities: problem solving, inquiry, and integrative learning. The problem solving component required students to define a problem, identify problem-solving strategies, and propose solutions and hypotheses. The inquiry component of the first-year experience included selecting a research topic, learning how to access information about the topic, learning how to evaluate existing information about the topic, and deciding which information to use to achieve desired results about the topic. The …

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson Mar 2012

Factors Influencing Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources, Terry Sharik, Robert Lilieholm, William Richardson

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Our 30-year record of undergraduate enrollment trends in natural resources shows pronounced cyclical swings over time, well beyond those for enrollments across all disciplines in four-year U.S. institutions of higher learning. Despite large increases in overall student enrollments, current natural resources enrollments are at about the same level as historic highs in the early 1980s and mid 1990s, and are increasingly dominated by broad degrees in natural resources. The reasons for these cycles are many and complex, and appear to be influenced by the political climate, unemployment rates, changing public values towards forests, a perceived lack of jobs and low …
