The Failure Of The Surveillance State: Observation, Narrative And Identity In American Literature And Culture Since The Cold War, Jeremy C. Justus
The Failure Of The Surveillance State: Observation, Narrative And Identity In American Literature And Culture Since The Cold War, Jeremy C. Justus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines an aporia in Michel Foucault's analysis of ideological panopticism. Foucault would likely suggest that the contemporary widespread use and acceptance of second-generation surveillance technologies exemplifies the discursive circulation of panoptic ideology. To the contrary, there is a great deal of evidence that suggests that such technology can be used for, to borrow Steve Mann's phrase, sousveillance (or, literally, "to watch from below"). By drawing from Niklas Luhmann's and Gregory Bateson's examinations of the inherent "blind spots" of observation systems (both literal and metaphorical), this dissertation suggests that sousveillance posits a challenge to the theoretically "neat" (according to …

Professional Development School Support Of The Elementary Globe Curriculum A Facilitated Adaptation Of Inquiry Science, Vance D. High
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This qualitative study focused on identifying barriers and remedies to those barriers found when teaching elementary school science. The Elementary GLOBE Program (2006) was the curriculum selected when doing the 18 month study. The researcher asked what made Elementary GLOBE (EG) easy and/or difficult to use. The researcher also wished to ascertain what impact did the adoption of EG have on the delivery of science instruction in the K-4 grade classrooms participating in this study. Two professional developments schools (PDS), located in a Mid Atlantic state were the sites for the study. Both schools are in an urban setting and …
Impact Of Stimulation Treatments On Production Performance Of Horizontal Wells In The Marcellus Shale, Kimberly L. Larch
Impact Of Stimulation Treatments On Production Performance Of Horizontal Wells In The Marcellus Shale, Kimberly L. Larch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The interest in exploitation of ultra-low permeability formations, such as the Marcellus Shale, has increased in the recent years. Shale formations require massive stimulation treatments to achieve economic production. The recent advances in horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing have proved successful in achieving commercial production. However, the parameters that directly affect lifetime production of the wells have not been well established.;The primary objective of this study is to examine the effects of basic stimulation parameters used in hydraulic fracturing of Marcellus Shale wells on production performance. Historical production data and stimulation treatment information have been collected and analyzed for …
The First World War Between Memory And History: A Conference Retrospective, Christopher Schultz, Jonathan Weier
The First World War Between Memory And History: A Conference Retrospective, Christopher Schultz, Jonathan Weier
Canadian Military History
Long after the guns of the First World War went silent on 11 November 1918, the war continues to spark debate. The many points of contention were on full display at the “From Memory to History” conference, hosted by Western University in London, Ontario, over three days in November 2011. Scholars and enthusiasts from around the world gathered to share, debate, and ultimately demonstrate that the war’s many legacies are still open to interpretation, even as the centenary of the war’s outbreak approaches. Perhaps the most crucial lesson learned is that both memory and history are malleable concepts, prone to …

Brigadier J.K. Lawson And Command Of “C” Force At Hong Kong, Tyler Wentzell
Canadian Military History
Brigadier J.K. Lawson, the commander of the Canadian contingent at the Battle of Hong Kong, has been the subject of only a few statements in any work concerning the battle. These statements, as false and misleading as they are, have been referenced many times and are generally taken as fact. This article seeks to rectify this affair by providing a biographical profile of Lawson based on archival data and interviews with his family. Contrary to other accounts, Lawson was a professional soldier with substantial education and experience in his craft and he was extremely well–suited to his appointment to command …
El Conflicto Armado En Colombia: Análisis Regional De Los Impactos De La Política De Seguridad Democrática, Lilian Yaffe
El Conflicto Armado En Colombia: Análisis Regional De Los Impactos De La Política De Seguridad Democrática, Lilian Yaffe
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines the politics of political violence in contemporary Colombia. Levels of violent contestation declined significantly in Colombia after 2003, during the implementation of the so-called Democratic Security Policy (DSP). Notwithstanding this general diminution of violence, the results of the DSP varied significantly across the different regions of the country. While the level of violent contestation of state authority by non-state actors has decreased in some regions, in others violence actually increased or remained basically unchanged. What explains these variations in political violence? The argument explored in this dissertation is that distinctive regional configurations or combinations of economic, social, …
A Comparison Of Metro And Nonmetro Incomes In A Twenty-First Century Economy, Don E. Albrecht
A Comparison Of Metro And Nonmetro Incomes In A Twenty-First Century Economy, Don E. Albrecht
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Recent developments in information and communication technology have reduced the relevance of location and created optimism that the historic economic advantages of metro areas relative to nonmetro areas may be diminished. This manuscript utilized data from the 2009 Current Population Survey to compare the incomes of the residents of metro compared with nonmetro counties. It was found that nonmetro incomes remain significantly lower than metro incomes even when considering the effects of intervening variables. Metro/nonmetro income differences were especially pronounced among persons with advanced educations and those employed in high-pay service industries. Consequently, many people who choose to live in …

Using Ecological Niche Modeling To Predict Occurence Of Rare Fish And Unionid Mussels In East Texas, Ashley Dunithan
Using Ecological Niche Modeling To Predict Occurence Of Rare Fish And Unionid Mussels In East Texas, Ashley Dunithan
Biology Theses
Fish and Unionid mussels are important components of aquatic ecosystems and the population decline of these organisms has become a topic of concern. Currently, there are six species of concern and three-state-threatened fish species and six state-threatened Unionid species that occur in east Texas. However, little information is known about the ecology of these species. In this study, I used ecological niche modeling, the software packages Maxent, and eleven abiotic environmental parameters to predict the probability of occurrence of rare fish and mussel species in east Texas. We were unable to model the fish species; however, the models for the …

"Pintu Terlarang"; A Disconcerting Spatial Interpretation Of Urban Dystopia, Bayu Kristianto
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The main character of the film Pintu terlarang (The forbidden door), Gambir, attains success in the art world by making statues of pregnant women. Part of his creative process is to insert dead foetuses into the wombs of the statues. His troubled soul meets a written request for help by a child he encounters in various places. The journey to find the child leads him to a secret door, revealing a terrifying reality of a dehumanized world. The city, commonly characterized by a sense of vastness, is set in opposition to small, enclosed spaces where individuals converse with their utmost …

Public Education In An Era Of Privatization: A Spatial Examination Of The Relationship Between Charter School Clusters And Gentrification In Washington, D.C. And Brooklyn, Ny, Stacey Kerr
Open Access Theses
Over the past decade, American public education has undergone a major transformation. Today, corporations, philanthropists, and the federal government promote and fund the charter school movement, which effectively diminishes the role of public education. Although charter schools in the United States were created with the intention of serving underprivileged students, several studies by geographers and education policy specialists have found that some of these schools have become institutions of gentrification and, in turn, establishments that reproduce social class distinctions. This thesis examines the distribution of charter schools in Washington, D.C. and New York’s borough of Brooklyn and compares charter school …
On Becoming And Being A Homeless Youth Activist, Edward J. Ameen
On Becoming And Being A Homeless Youth Activist, Edward J. Ameen
Open Access Dissertations
Despite decades of interventions to address the immediate needs of homeless youth, America still suffers with youth homelessness. This study suggests that real solutions have come, and will continue to come, from individuals using collective action to redistribute sociopolitical power and resources. The study aimed to understand (1) why people become activists on behalf of this population, and (2) what qualities and characteristics allow them to remain in this work despite its challenges. A review of the literature uncovered more than twenty situational and developmental factors for activists of numerous causes but none examined homeless youth activists and very few …

The Election Of A Lesbian Mayor In A Religiously Conservative City: The Case Of Houston, Texas, Nancy Stockwell Morris
The Election Of A Lesbian Mayor In A Religiously Conservative City: The Case Of Houston, Texas, Nancy Stockwell Morris
Open Access Theses
The American South in general remains a pocket of predominantly conservative, Baptist and Evangelical Christian hegemony; however, metropolitan areas of the South display more diversity and pluralism as a result of foreign and domestic migration into the region, changes in religious affiliation, an increasing population choosing no religious affiliation, and the growing influence of popular culture on religious participation. These forces act within a paradigm of neosecularization in which personal conscience exerts more influence than religious authority. Houston, Texas, within the context of the South, serves as the case study that demonstrates the temporal and spatial changes to Houston’s religious …
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
America’S Idol? How The Contestant Most Voted For Doesn’T Always Win, Jason Gershman
Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship
The reality television show American Idol has some biases which display themselves in data charts and curves of contestants’ telephone voting patterns. Some of the biases examined include issues of geography and performance order. This paper shows that the format of the show leads to biases in favor of contestants who are from, and have large fan bases in, certain parts of the country. Another major flaw is a bias in favor of contestants who sing later in the show. I show that the order the contestants sing in is not random chance but instead carefully chosen by the producers. …

BACKGROUND:
Mortality estimates can measure and monitor the impacts of conflict on a population, guide humanitarian efforts, and help to better understand the public health impacts of conflict. Vital statistics registration and surveillance systems are rarely functional in conflict settings, posing a challenge of estimating mortality using retrospective population-based surveys.
RESULTS:
We present a two-stage cluster sampling method for application in population-based mortality surveys. The sampling method utilizes gridded population data and a geographic information system (GIS) to select clusters in the first sampling stage and Google Earth TM imagery and sampling grids to select households in the second sampling …
The Unraveling Of Shakespeare's Othello, Corey M. Jay
The Unraveling Of Shakespeare's Othello, Corey M. Jay
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis analyzes one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies from the perspective of its costumes, and chronicles the start-to-finish process of the costume design for the April 2012 production of Othello held at Pomona College. Incorporating the Pre-Raphaelite art movement with high fashion’s late Alexander McQueen, this thesis brings to light Othello’s predominant themes of race and honesty by means of luxurious textiles and distinct silhouettes.

Incorporating Hispanic Culture Into A Secondary Instrumental Classroom, Alexander Armstead
Incorporating Hispanic Culture Into A Secondary Instrumental Classroom, Alexander Armstead
Honors Theses
For much of history, there has been a long-standing belief of the superiority of Western art music; that it is more natural, complex, expressive, and meaningful than other musics. This standpoint is being challenged more than ever as advances in musicology, ethnomusicolgy, global communication and media bring musics of other nations and cultures to the doorstep of the American people. There are many benefits to teaching cultural music in the instrumental classroom, including social and musical components. These components have the ability to open the minds of students to a higher sense of community as they enter the "world village" …

Ambassador Stephen Krasner's Orienting Principle For Foreign Policy (And Military Management)—Responsible Sovereignty, Max G. Manwaring Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The principle security threat of the past several centuries—war between or among major powers—is gone. Two new types of threats have been introduced into the global security arena. Violent nonstate actors and other indirect political, economic, and social causes of poverty, social exclusion, corruption, terrorism, transnational crime, the global drug problem, and gangs are a few examples of these “new” threats to global security and stability. More and more, national security implies protection—through a variety of nonmilitary and military ways and means—of popular interests that add up to well-being. This broadened definition of the contemporary security problem makes the concept …
Prisoners Of War As Library Users, Jean Langdon-Ford
Prisoners Of War As Library Users, Jean Langdon-Ford
Canadian Military History
One does not usually associate libraries and study classes with amenities provided for internees in Prisoner of War camps in the First World War. It was surprising then for me, as Librarian/Archivist of the Canadian War Museum, to find evidence in our Library/Archives of well-organized libraries in the First World War internment camps in Germany. My introduction to POW library users in this war came about as I was undertaking a preliminary inventory of the rich resources of the Canadian War Museum (CWM) Archives. In the CWM Archives are two files related to libraries in POW camps in Germany. One …
