Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall May 2012

Capturing A Complex Moment: Pictorial Representations Of The Shenandoah Valley In The Mid-Twentieth Century, Angela Lee Walthall

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis includes the work, research, and findings that culminated from a non-traditional project that revolved around the processing and analysis of the William Garber Photograph Collection, which is housed in Special Collections of Carrier Library at James Madison University. After processing the photograph collection according to standard archival practice, I analyzed the images to make conclusions about life in the Shenandoah Valley during the post-World War II era. As I delved further into the photographs, I became increasingly aware of three trends: rural modernization, the prevalence of white supremacy, and an emphasis on tourism in the region. Secondary work …

Saving September : A Thesis About Bullying In Two Acts, John Jay Boda May 2012

Saving September : A Thesis About Bullying In Two Acts, John Jay Boda

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Thesis: In 2010, a rash of suicides — especially among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth — began a national conversation about bullying. United States laws and policies along with prevailing societal attitudes towards homosexuality create an ethos condoning such bullying often leading many LGBT youth to conclude it is better to commit suicide than it is to go on living. Growing up isn’t easy for anybody, but it's all the more difficult when you are (or perceived to be) LGBT. Saving September is part narrative play, part civics lesson about the difficulties of growing up gay in America …

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court May 2012

Design Capitalism, Emily Van Court

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Social business examples are few in the architecture profession. In fact, humanitarian architecture as a concept is new to the field. Left to non-profits and academics (Architecture for Humanity and Rural Studio respectively), humanitarian architecture is not traditionally regarded as a profitable business.

However, other fields have found ways to combine a social initiative and a profitable business. Grameen Bank founder Dr. Muhammad Yunus not only defined the term, but created the model for social business. Subsequently, many non-profits have followed suit and applied the successful system, increasing the capacity for social change within their fields.

My thesis will aim …

Local herbaria of James Madison University (JMUH), Bridgewater College (BDWR), Eastern Mennonite University (HAVI) and Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) were also searched for pre-existing specimens. The results of the study were compared to records of the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora (2012), which currently maps the distribution of vascular plants …

Advantages And Challenges Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Autonomy In The Postheroic Age, Nathan Richards Fields May 2012

Advantages And Challenges Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Autonomy In The Postheroic Age, Nathan Richards Fields

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Over the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized how the U.S. engages elusive militants in low-intensity conflicts by allowing the U.S. to project continuous military power without risking combat casualties. While UAV usage promises additional tactical advantages in future conflicts, little agreement exists regarding a strategic vision for UAV research and development, necessary for the U.S. to allocate limited resources among UAV development programs that address national security objectives. The present research makes the case for a future UAV technology evolutionary path leading to fully autonomous intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)/strike UAV systems for the United States Air …

Disaster Vulnerability Of University Student Populations, Jamie Lynn Auletta May 2012

Disaster Vulnerability Of University Student Populations, Jamie Lynn Auletta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Student populations at Gulf Coast universities and colleges are subjected to multiple forces working together making them an especially vulnerable sub-group to hazards. Research has suggested that college students represent a segment of the population that hazards research has frequently overlooked and maybe not fully appreciated in university emergency planning. Most prior research has focused on university disaster experiences, highlighting what went wrong, and what should be done but little research focuses on what is actually taking place. The primary intent of this research was to gain better insight into university emergency planning and identify areas universities have neglected with …

Counternarratives Of The Diaspora: Haitian Musical Performance In World Beat Markets, Kevin Francis Mason

Open Access Theses

This study will investigate the performance motivations of three Haitian musicians based in South Florida who use their artistic platforms to offer a version of their country omitted from dominant media projections of the country. This study focuses on narrative as a device that allows these musicians to offer counterstories against dominantly negative media projections that have real effects on Haitians. The thesis will examine the work of world beat artist Erol Josué and his performance motivations in global record markets. His work as a oungan (Vodou priest) plays a large role in the composition of his “electro-Vodou” world beat …

Re-Configurable Putting Green, Matthew Ralphs May 2012

Re-Configurable Putting Green, Matthew Ralphs

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This report discusses the design of a prototype transformable putting green that can be programmed to recreate the topography of any putting green. The goal of the design was to give a realistic putting experience with real topography in an indoor environment. This report discusses the design of a pair of 4’x4’ module prototypes; a commercial implementation of this design would utilize a number of modules to create putting greens on a more realistic scale (example 12’x32’). The design of a full size transformable putting green necessitates a topographical range of up to 30”. After initial concepts and preliminary designs …

On The Design Of Socially-Aware Distributed Systems, Nicolas Kourtellis May 2012

On The Design Of Socially-Aware Distributed Systems, Nicolas Kourtellis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social media services and applications enable billions of users to share an unprecedented amount of social information, which is further augmented by location and collocation information from mobile phones, and can be aggregated to provide an accurate digital representation of the social world. This dissertation argues that extracted social knowledge from this wealth of information can be embedded in the design of novel distributed, socially-aware applications and services, consequently improving system response time, availability and resilience to attacks, and reducing system overhead. To support this thesis, two research avenues are explored.

First, this dissertation presents Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service …

Mapping Women's Movement In Medieval England, Claire Clement May 2012

Mapping Women's Movement In Medieval England, Claire Clement

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates women’s geographical movement in medieval England from the perspective of mobility and freedom. It uses pilgrimage accounts from medieval miracle story collections and to gather information about individual travel patterns. The study uses GIS to analyze gendered mobility patterns, and to investigate whether there were noticeable differences in the distance which men and women traveled and the geographical area of the country they originated. It also analyzes the nearness of men’s and women’s respective origin towns to alternative pilgrimage locations, as a means of examining the factors determining gendered travel mobility. The study finds that women’s travel …

Opportunities And Challenges Of Citywide Main Street Programs: Examining The Urban Environment, Coordinating Structures And Political Realities In The Application Of The Four Point Approach, Ryan Rinn

Theses and Dissertations

The Main Street Four Point Approach to commercial revitalization has been applied successfully in thousands of communities across the U.S. Starting in 1995, citywide coordinated programs began applying the balanced points of organization, design, economic restructuring and promotion to urban environments. This thesis focuses on the opportunities and challenges present in five citywide Main Street programs in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Orlando and Portland through quantitative inquiry and interviews with program administrators. This thesis discusses density, capacity, volunteerism, vernacular culture, and politics as emergent themes of the urban application of the Main Street Approach and recommends expanding the breadth of …

Culture And Context: Upstream Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Among Haitian Immigrants Living In Miami, Florida, Jonathan K. Kish May 2012

Culture And Context: Upstream Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Among Haitian Immigrants Living In Miami, Florida, Jonathan K. Kish

Open Access Dissertations

In 2011 over 500,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and approximately 250,000 will die of the disease. The majority of incident cases will occur among women who lack routine access to Papalanicolou (Pap) test screening. While access-related factors, such as income and health insurance status, are primary drivers of screening utilization research suggests that a number of individual and contextual social and cultural factors, such as low cervical cancer knowledge, lower educational attainment and non-Western health beliefs can exert an independent or multiplicative effect. Among the immigrant Haitian population of Miami, Florida the incidence of cervical cancer …

A Step Towards Sustainable: The Meshing Of The Mormon Church Headquarters' Environmental Earth Stewardship Practices With Modern Trends Of Sustainability, Natalie Watkins

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Planners and landscape architects are decision makers whose commitment to sustainable development is integral in transitioning our built environment into a renewable and more self sustaining system. The built environment is a place where the three pillars of sustainability comprising social equity, environmental bear-ability, and economic viability are clearly manifested. The recent decades or scientific research in this area have offered us opportunities to make changes in the built environment that will better support future generations of our local communities. However, social and religious community structures can make change difficult on the Wasatch Front where the headquarters of the Church …

The New Pitcairn Islands Constitution: Strong, Empty Words For Britain’S Smallest Colony, Michael O. Eshleman May 2012

The New Pitcairn Islands Constitution: Strong, Empty Words For Britain’S Smallest Colony, Michael O. Eshleman

Pace International Law Review

The Pitcairn Constitution runs 12,164 words. It is the length of the Alaska Constitution6 and triple that of the U.S. Constitution. It has 66 articles, one article for every inhabitant on Pitcairn, which has the population of a small village. Many articles are filled with details of the sort generally left by the United States Constitution for statutes but which clutter many state constitutions. This is typical of British colonial constitutions—long and detailed. Reading the document shows much is based on European human rights law.

Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett May 2012

Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett

Human Biology

One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a within-population decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30 globally distributed human populations, and a climatic …

Bridging The Divided City: Immigrant Economies And The Ethics Of Spatial Organization In Johannesburg, Daniel Keith Thompson Jr. May 2012

Bridging The Divided City: Immigrant Economies And The Ethics Of Spatial Organization In Johannesburg, Daniel Keith Thompson Jr.

Open Access Theses

In the absence of coherent and evenly implemented spatial planning in post-apartheid Johannesburg, foreign nationals are perceived to have contributed to the spatial fragmentation of the city and exacerbated social distance through enclave formation and discourses of separation from locals. Yet in other ways, immigrant economies and community governance structures connect disparate parts of Johannesburg and work to bridge a city that has become increasingly divided along economic lines. This thesis examines how the social and built environments of Johannesburg have shaped economic strategies and efforts to secure business space by foreign communities and how these strategies are perceived ethically. …
