Libertarian Acceptance Among The Students Of The University Of Southern Mississippi, Joseph Lebeau May 2012

Libertarian Acceptance Among The Students Of The University Of Southern Mississippi, Joseph Lebeau

Honors Theses

How can a potential libertarian portion of USM students be differentiated from the conservative and liberal segments? The most obvious method is to classify students by their respective demographic factors. Demographic categories such as gender, race, age, religion, field of study, etc. could prove to be extremely useful when attempting to identify patterns in populations. The connections between these variables and political ideology are further examined in the literature review. The demographics of a potential libertarian faction have yet to be defined, specifically at the University of Southern Mississippi. Therefore, the goal of my research will be to first locate …

From Propietario To Empresario: A Case Study Of Farmer Innovation In Ica, Peru, Elizabeth Faye Weintraub

Open Access Theses

Small holder irrigation projects have been cited as a strategy for poverty alleviation throughout the developing world by providing a mechanism to improve efficiency of water delivery, enhance income generation, and promote community organization (both economic and social). However, a paradigm of top-down transfer of technology has dominated the agricultural development discourse and practice, failing to take into account local knowledge systems and individual farmers’ capacity for innovation and experimentation. This in-depth case study of a community of small-scale farmers in a remote region in southern Peru examines a homegrown agricultural innovation in modern drip irrigation technology and the social …

Physical Activity In The High School Curricula, Katy Foster

Education Senior Action Research Projects

My research is based on the student athletes in my classroom, who also are on the basketball team that I help coach. With my research, I plan to monitor my students’ grades while they are in season and interview them about the hard work they put into their sports and schoolwork. With this interview, I will be asking my students how much time they spend doing homework, how fatigued they are during school, how much time they spend playing their sport, and why they think their grades slip during season. Also, I plan on interviewing some of the girls on …

Energy Balance Climate Models, Damage Reservoirs And The Time Profile Of Climate Change Policy, William Brock, Gustav Engstrom, Anastasios Xepapadeas May 2012

Energy Balance Climate Models, Damage Reservoirs And The Time Profile Of Climate Change Policy, William Brock, Gustav Engstrom, Anastasios Xepapadeas

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

A simplified energy balance climate model is considered with the global mean temperature as the state variable, and an endogenous ice line. The movements of the ice line towards the Poles are associated with damage reservoirs where initial damages are high and then eventually vanish as the ice caps vanish and the damage reservoir is exhausted. We couple this climate model with a simple economic growth model and we show that the endogenous ice line induces a nonlinearity. This nonlinearity when combined with two sources of damages - the conventional damages due to temperature increase and the reservoir damages - …

The Need For Collaboration In Planning Efforts During Natural Disasters: An Evaluation Of The City Of Richmond, Virginia, Jocelyn Leitch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis evaluates whether or not information data sharing is effectively used between federal, state, and local government agencies and non-governmental agencies in a metropolitan area during and immediately after a major natural disaster. Also, whether vulnerable populations were identified and considered during emergency management. The chosen study area is the City of Richmond, VA, and the disaster response is based on flooding episodes that occurred in the city over the last decade following hurricanes and tropical depressions. Questionnaires were administered to representatives of federal, state, and local agencies and NGOs. The questionnaires consisted of a Likert-style series of 10 …

Enemy Within, Enemy Without: Dominican Attitudes Toward Haitians Before And After The Earthquake Of January 12, 2010, Maria Braden Clark

Open Access Theses

There has long been tension between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, two nations begrudgingly linked by the geographic constraints of a shared island, differing in their economic status, way of life, and how they perceive themselves and each other. This tension springs from conflicts over land, the lingering perceived threat of Haiti’s occupation of the Dominican Republic in the mid-1800s, the discourse of the Trujillo dictatorship that rejected Haiti as a means by which to forge national unity, and ongoing Haitian labor migration that has its roots in the emergence of the Dominican sugar industry. This thesis performs a content …

Coffee Markets, Smallholder Credit, And Landscape Change In The Bolaven Plateau Region, Laos, Matthew Toro May 2012

Coffee Markets, Smallholder Credit, And Landscape Change In The Bolaven Plateau Region, Laos, Matthew Toro

Open Access Theses

This thesis analyzes relationships between global coffee prices, international development schemes, local trading and credit systems, and landscape dynamics in the Bolaven Plateau region of southern Laos. The region is a complex and rapidly changing resource space serving principally as the productive, socio-ecological base of the Lao coffee commodity chain. Fieldwork conducted there in 2009 entailed in-depth interviews and quasi-survey semi-structured interviews. These latter interviews yielded a database of 503 detailed loan/debt histories for 192 coffee smallholder households between 1987 and 2008. These data reveal a socio-economically exploitative cycle of coffee production, chronic indebtedness, and poverty at the base of …

Shopping For Identity: An Economic Explanation For The Post-2003 Violence In Iraq, Alan M. Noory May 2012

Shopping For Identity: An Economic Explanation For The Post-2003 Violence In Iraq, Alan M. Noory

Dissertations

The American occupation of Iraq revealed intense intra-society violence in Iraq that was not possible to take note of during decades of the state’s systematic practice of violence against society and the organized counter-violence in response to it. The occupation, along with the collapse of a regime without any viable governing alternative, and the historic ethno-sectarian tensions are attractive explanatory factors for the ongoing intra-society violence in Iraq. Yet, they fail to explain another civil war that took place in Iraqi Kurdistan a decade earlier. This forgotten war took place in an almost all Kurd/ all Sunni society, after three …

Remote Sensing Of Shorelines Using Data Fusion Of Hyperspectral And Multispectral Imagery Acquired From Mobile And Fixed Platforms, Charles R. Bostater, Heather Frystacky

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

An optimized data fusion methodology is presented and makes use of airborne and vessel mounted hyperspectral and multispectral imagery acquired at littoral zones in Florida and the northern Gulf of Mexico. The results demonstrate the use of hyperspectral-multispectral data fusion anomaly detection along shorelines and in surface and subsurface waters. Hyperspectral imagery utilized in the data fusion analysis was collected using a 64-1024 channel, 1376 pixel swath width; temperature stabilized sensing system; an integrated inertial motion unit; and differential GPS. The imaging system is calibrated using dual 18 inch calibration spheres, spectral line sources, and custom line targets. Simultaneously collected …

Influence Of Diet-And Weight-Related Behaviors And Social Norms On Obesity In Texas Eighth And Eleventh Grade Adolescents, Brianna Moore

Health and Kinesiology Theses

Introduction: Adolescent obesity and overweight is now of critical concern for Texas. The aim of this study was to understand the influence of diet- and weight-related behaviors and perceived social norms on weight status in Texas adolescents. Methods: This study analyzed of 2004-2005 School Physical Activity and Nutrition data. Multinomial logistic regression tested the associations between overweight and obese (compared with underweight/normal) and the influence of diet- and weight-related social norms and behaviors, adjusting for demographics. Results: Certain factors were associated with a decreased risk of obesity: (a) Breakfast skipping (Male/Eleventh grade); (b) Adequate dairy consumption (African American/Eighth grade); and …

Roundtable Discussion Examining Ritual, Technology, And Community In Urban Communication, Victoria Geyer, Mary Ann Allison Phd, Suzanne N. Berman, Gary Gumpert

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Pervasive technologies that now exist in the urban setting have greatly improved the ability to connect on a macro-level, but have minimized the intimate shared experience of community on a micro level. This paper explores how technology has changed rituals within the global community and has contributed new methods to the process of human interaction. Technology’s influence on civic engagement, business meetings, shopping and socializing are examined to assess the impact technology has on human connections.
