A Content Analysis Of The Media Agenda Setting In The Saudi National Newscasts, Faisal Adnan Sabir May 2012

A Content Analysis Of The Media Agenda Setting In The Saudi National Newscasts, Faisal Adnan Sabir

Student Theses and Dissertations

Employing the agenda setting perspective, this study examined the values in two Saudi national channels' newscasts. These government owned channels have been content analyzed. They are: KSA 1 which is targeting Arabic viewers, and KSA 2 which broadcasts in English. The results support and reinforce the understanding of the various postulates of the agenda setting theory, such as influencing the dynamics of opinion expression and formation on the viewers, as well as, applying the agenda setting theory on the Saudi national TV to understand the relationship between public, media and policy agenda setting. The media agenda setting is strongly correlated …

The Effect Of College-Family Conflict On Academic Variables For College Student-Parents., Michael Leonard Green May 2012

The Effect Of College-Family Conflict On Academic Variables For College Student-Parents., Michael Leonard Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A large body of research exists concerning working parents' dual-role conflict, known as Work-Family Conflict (WFC; Greenhaus & Beutell, 1985) and its adverse effect on work and non-work variables. Given the similarity to the salient life roles of academic work and parenting, this study applied the model of WFC to a college student-parent population to test a model of the harmful effects of College-Family Conflict (CFC) on academic variables. This sample included 345 graduate and undergraduate student-parents. This study used Structural Equation Modeling to provide a model of dual-role conflict that demonstrates how the roles of parent and college student …

A Study Of Effective Teachers' Knowledge And Use Of Intersectional Data To Improve Student Academic Performance, Raychellet Williamson May 2012

A Study Of Effective Teachers' Knowledge And Use Of Intersectional Data To Improve Student Academic Performance, Raychellet Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The discussion on how to improve students’ academic performance has a long and rich history in the U.S.Although it has been a national priority, the debate has centered on the best method to accomplish this goal. Bernhardt (2003) and Shenand Cooley (2008) recognized the importance of teachers, principals, and data, deployed together, as critical tools to improving academic performance.More specifically, putting the right cross-section of data about the student, school, staff, and community together can inform teachers of the best practices to improve students’ academic performance. The researcher’s goal was to develop a consensus on teachers’ knowledge and use of …

There’S No Place Like Home: From Oz To Antichrist, J. Sage Elwell May 2012

There’S No Place Like Home: From Oz To Antichrist, J. Sage Elwell

Journal of Religion & Film

This article explores the dialectic of the uncanny in The Wizard of Oz (Victor Flemming, 1939) and Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 2009), treating the latter as a sequel to the former such that we encounter Dorothy first as a young girl and then as a grown woman. I observe that the uncanny entails a repressive and expressive moment that is cinematically rendered in these two films, and drawing on Freud and Žižek, I argue that in Dorothy’s evolution from Oz to Antichrist we see that the witches and wizards and gods and devils of our own minds are known to …

Scapegoats And Redemption On Shutter Island, Cari Myers May 2012

Scapegoats And Redemption On Shutter Island, Cari Myers

Journal of Religion & Film

The themes of redemptive violence, scapegoating, and ritual in the films of Martin Scorsese have provided much grist for critical scholarship. While it is going too far to claim that Scorsese is intentionally interpreting Girardian themes (which are themselves borrowed from a rich mythological tradition), the comparisons between the theorist and the director are compelling. My goal here is to establish the primary themes of scapegoating, mimesis, the cycle of violence, and feuding identities that occur in both Girard’s works and Scorsese’s films and pull them forward into a more recent work of Scorsese, Shutter Island.

Creation Of A Spatial Decision Support System As A Risk Assessment Tool Based On Kentucky Tornado Climatology, Christopher Michael Blinn May 2012

Creation Of A Spatial Decision Support System As A Risk Assessment Tool Based On Kentucky Tornado Climatology, Christopher Michael Blinn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tornadoes are one of Mother Nature’s deadliest phenomena. They affect a large region of the United States. The risk of tornadoes is contingent on dynamic atmospheric conditions that are most likely during spring but which can occur anytime of the year, making the storms challenging to forecast. Using geographical information systems (GIS), a web-based spatial decision support system (SDSS) was created to help understand the spatial dimension of tornado risk assessment. The risk values are calculated using Tornado Days rather than taking a crude density measurement. The SDSS hosts GIS web services that are displayed on an Adobe Flex application. …

An Exploratory Study To Determine If Marching Band Rehearsal Activities Could Satisfy National Physical Education Standard Three As Measured By The Heart Rates Of Collegiate Marching Band Members, Serena Weren May 2012

An Exploratory Study To Determine If Marching Band Rehearsal Activities Could Satisfy National Physical Education Standard Three As Measured By The Heart Rates Of Collegiate Marching Band Members, Serena Weren

Student Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of states allow high school curricular credits earned in marching band to substitute for required physical education credits. Legitimizing this substitution would required that marching band meet contemporary recommendations for frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity as stated in the Third National Standard for Physical Education. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to determine the intensity of physical activity occurring in a marching band rehearsal by measuring the heart rates of collegiate marching band members using pulse counts and heart rate monitors. Some marching band activities were found to raise the average heart rate …

Citizen Action, Power Relations And Wetland Management In The Tampa Bay Urban Socio-Ecosystem, Cornelius Owusu Adjei May 2012

Citizen Action, Power Relations And Wetland Management In The Tampa Bay Urban Socio-Ecosystem, Cornelius Owusu Adjei

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wetlands are vital ecosystems that provide ecological, economic and social benefits to societies. In the Tampa Bay region in West Central Florida, a growing population has put immense pressure on wetlands. The situation has not gone unnoticed in the public domain with concerns raised about the need to formulate policies that would protect them. However, it has been difficult to ascertain the level of citizen involvement in the decision making process.

This study aimed at investigating whether the perceptions and concerns of citizens drove them to influence local water policy. Questionnaires were used to collect data from residents living in …

Global Poverty - Local Problem: Institutional Determinants Of Poverty Among Indigenous Peoples Of Nepal, Gyanesh Lama May 2012

Global Poverty - Local Problem: Institutional Determinants Of Poverty Among Indigenous Peoples Of Nepal, Gyanesh Lama

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation investigated why some groups or communities become poor while others become rich. Using institutional design as a theoretical guidance, the study conducted an in-depth analysis of the socioeconomic disparities between indigenous peoples and caste people in Nepal. The study used multilevel modeling, Geographic Information System: GIS), and ethnography research methods. Indigenous peoples in Nepal were found to be significantly at higher risk of poverty than caste people. Discrimination against indigenous peoples appears to be the key determinant of indigenous poverty. Geographic isolation and proximity to caste people were also significant predictors of indigenous poverty. The study has implication …

From Myth To Meth: Viewing The American Small Town Through The Lens Of Psychoanalytica Fantasy, Christopher Boehm May 2012

From Myth To Meth: Viewing The American Small Town Through The Lens Of Psychoanalytica Fantasy, Christopher Boehm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Simultaneously a symbol for benevolent hospitality and hostile insularity, the American small town and its surrounding rural areas have assumed many faces and forms in both filmic and literary representations over the last hundred years. Whereas the metropolis carries with it a specific history and culture that is known, at least in part, by an audience, the small-town, with all its stereotypical associations, lacks an analogous geographical and historical specificity. As a result of this relative anonymity, the small town often becomes a blank canvas onto which a number of conflicting representations can be painted. Despite significant differences in historical, …

Fashioning Women Under Totalitarian Regimes: "New Women" Of Nazi Germany And Soviet Russia, Victoria Vygodskaia Rust May 2012

Fashioning Women Under Totalitarian Regimes: "New Women" Of Nazi Germany And Soviet Russia, Victoria Vygodskaia Rust

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My dissertation seeks to expand our knowledge of Russian and German women's history under totalitarian systems by comparing women's fashioning by the state and their self-fashioning in Germany and Russia during the Third Reich and Bolshevik and Stalinist rule respectively. I argue that processes of women's fashioning and self-fashioning were largely influenced by the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century debates on the so-called Woman Question and the New Woman and were culturally specific. I map the evolution of the Woman Question and the New Woman in the decades directly preceding and following the Nazi and Bolshevik seizure of power, defining changing …

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia May 2012

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this article, I argue that an elevated macro-level perspective is imperative for conducting critical studies in the fields of marketing and consumer research. There are epistemic barriers to operating in this manner, and I offer several suggestions for overcoming these barriers. Finally, I review the research spaces for critical studies of marketing in various global settings and conclude that United Kingdom and Nordic Europe have the best epistemic climate, and this region needs to take leadership in promoting greater range of macro and critical studies of marketing in the rest of the world.

Northern Lights: Fourth World Nations And The Geopolitical Dance In The Arctic, Heidi G. Bruce May 2012

Northern Lights: Fourth World Nations And The Geopolitical Dance In The Arctic, Heidi G. Bruce

Capstone Collection

Over the past decade, the Arctic region has received increased attention from climate scientists, politicians, and transnational corporations. Human-induced climate change is causing glaciers to recede, resulting in new northern sea passages that are highly sought after by businesses and governments alike. Deeply affected by this increased northern exposure are Arctic Fourth World nations – politically and culturally distinct nations encapsulated by states – that have lived in the Arctic for millennia. This paper examines the impacts that expanded northern sea routes are having on Arctic Fourth World nations and the conflict mitigation approaches being used in the region. Research …
