Refugees Of The Arab Spring: The Syrian Refugees In Lebanon April 2011-April 2012, Sam Van Vliet, Guita Hourani
Faculty Journal Articles
This review of one year influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon is meant to reveal the political, communitarian and humanitarian factors that shape the State of Lebanon's policy towards it. The Lebanese government has lately adopted a ‘disassociation’ policy regarding the Syrian conflict with the objective of preventing the spill-over of the conflict and the destabilization of the country. Regional and international powers well understand the reasons for this policy, given Lebanon's geopolitical situation, its history and its 'special ties' with Syria. However, while Lebanon might be able to disassociate itself from the political entanglement of the Syrian crisis, it …
Ssa's Development Delay: Three Essays On The Monetary System, The International Trade And Property Rights, Julie Lohi
Ssa's Development Delay: Three Essays On The Monetary System, The International Trade And Property Rights, Julie Lohi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation focuses on the issues of economic performances in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It includes three essays on the monetary system, the international trade and property rights.;The first chapter discusses the inflation dynamics across different exchange rate regime groups in SSA. In particular, a comparative analysis is conducted between the CFA franc currency union countries and the non-members of SSA to see whether the CFA franc countries exhibit lower inflation in the short and the long run compared to other countries. This chapter also assesses the money supply growth, output growth and money velocity growth as the sources of inflation …
Reservoir Heterogeneity In A Carbon Sequestration Target: The Donovan Sand Member Of The Rodessa Formation, Citronelle Field, Alabama, Keith Coffindaffer
Reservoir Heterogeneity In A Carbon Sequestration Target: The Donovan Sand Member Of The Rodessa Formation, Citronelle Field, Alabama, Keith Coffindaffer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Citronelle field, located in Mobile County, Alabama, has been chosen as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pilot site, and supercritical CO2 has been injected for the combined purposes of long-term storage testing and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The target formation for injection is the Early Cretaceous Donovan Sand of the Rodessa Formation, and is characterized by discontinuous fine- to medium-grained, heterogeneous arkosic fluvial sandstones interbedded with fissile mudstones and micaceous silts. Based upon core analysis of the Donovan Sand, depofacies indicate a fluvio-deltaic/estuarine depositional environment for the Donovan Sand. Probable sources of the …

Evaluation Of The Potential For Detection And Classification Of Ailanthus Altissima (Tree Of Heaven) Using Lidar Data, Cassidy Robert Rhea
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis compares methods for delineating and classifying the invasive, exotic tree Ailanthus altissima (tree of heaven), using attributes derived entirely from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. The accuracy of two image segmentation methods: 1) Tree variable window program (TreeVaW) and 2) watershed segmentation, and three classifications schemes: 1) classification and regression trees (CART) 2) artificial neural networks (NN) and 3) support vector machines (SVM) are compared. I found that generally the watershed segmentation method produced better segmentation results than the TreeVaW segmentation method, and that the CART classification was the most accurate overall classifier, although the SVM classification …
Petrofacies And Depositional Systems Of The Bakken Formation In The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Anne Steptoe
Petrofacies And Depositional Systems Of The Bakken Formation In The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Anne Steptoe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Late Devonian and Early Mississippian Bakken Formation in the Williston basin of North Dakota is a large emerging unconventional oil play that taps into reserves previously thought to be uneconomical to produce. The hydrocarbon source rocks and unconventional oil reservoir are widespread across the intracratonic basin with an estimated 3.7 billion barrels of undiscovered, recoverable oil, and has significant economic potential in portions of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Although the Bakken interval is the target of numerous horizontal wells throughout the basin, several uncertainties remain including the environment and distribution of depositional facies, especially in the …
Physicochemical Properties Of Alaska Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) Surimi Seafood Nutrified With Powdered Cellulose Fiber And Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Alicia Debusca
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Surimi is minced deboned fish meat that has been washed of lipids, sarcoplasmic proteins, and other impurities. Surimi seafood, also known as "imitation crabmeat", is widely enjoyed in the United States; however, it is not currently nutrified with fiber, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and salt substitute. In the present study, preliminary experimentation was done to determine the optimal level of fiber addition. Powdered cellulose was added to Alaska Pollock surimi gels at levels of 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% fiber. The objectives of this initial study were to determine effect of dietary fiber on 1) color and textural …
Political Cooperation And International Environmental Governance In The Baltic Sea Region After World War Ii, Taavi Kelder
Political Cooperation And International Environmental Governance In The Baltic Sea Region After World War Ii, Taavi Kelder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today, global environmental problems have become one of the most important international issues. This Master's thesis is about international environmental and political cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region after World War II. The Baltic Sea is surrounded by nine states and the degradation of the marine environment of the Baltic Sea has become a common problem. However, international environmental cooperation depends on many political factors: financial support, international organizations, the attitude of states, international law and the status of environmental issues in the international arena. This thesis focuses on different forms of political cooperation which have influenced international environmental governance …
Cliff Ecology: Extent, Biota, And Recreation Of Cliff Environments In The New River Gorge, Wv, Peter W. Clark
Cliff Ecology: Extent, Biota, And Recreation Of Cliff Environments In The New River Gorge, Wv, Peter W. Clark
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The New River Gorge National River (NERI) contains an extensive network of exposed cliff-forming sandstone units, the most extensive in West Virginia and possibly within the entire Appalachian range. These cliff resources are critical to NERI's national significance, and contain specialized and potentially rare plant communities (Vanderhorst 2001; Mahan 2004; Vanderhorst, Jeuck, and Gawler 2007). This project investigates the spatial distribution of cliffs, associated plant (vascular and non-vascular) and lichen communities, and the impacts to cliff environments caused by recreational rock climbing.;Using LiDAR in a GIS, we mapped all cliffs in the northern extent of NERI, from Keeney's Creek to …

Comparison Of Pass Assessment Scores In Single-Gender And Heterogeneous Middle Schools In South Carolina, Patricia Canada
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In response to the mandates of No Child Left Behind, (NCLB), educators across the country struggle to close the gaps between males and females. Some of the physiological differences existing between the male and female brain suggest support for single-gender instruction, which is on the rise within this country as well as other parts of the world. Using the theoretical framework based on brain research, the purpose of this quantitative study was to compare the effect of single-gender instruction on assessment results in Palmetto Assessments of State Standards (PASS) math and reading scores of public middle single-gender schools to mixed-gender …
The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani
The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
We study the contribution of natural resource intensity to long-term development along different dimensions: per-capita income, institutional quality, and education. We allow natural resources to affect these dimensions differently in different regions of the world. The evidence suggests that natural resources are generally a positive driver of development, but in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) their contribution is almost negligible, if not even negative. We explain these cross-regional differences with the fact that in SSA more than anywhere else large resource endowments are combined with a particularly bad disease environment. Some historical evidence and formal econometric results support this hypothesis.
The Professionalization Of The American Army Through The War Of 1812, Robert L. Heiss
The Professionalization Of The American Army Through The War Of 1812, Robert L. Heiss
History Theses
The American military tradition stretches back to the militia of England. The English colonists brought a tradition of militia service and a fear of standing armies to America. Once in America, the colonies formed their own militias, using them for defense and then later for offensive operations. At the time of the American Revolution the American colonies had to combine the militia with an army. The fear of a standing army hindered the Continental Army, and then later the American Army, from being an effective force. By the time of the American Civil War, this had changed. There was a …

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
Governance has gone through radical changes over the last twenty five years.Seemingly, it became one of the important strategies, processes, methods and mechanisms in governing countries to achieve economic development goals. The objective of this paper is to observe the local economic governance dynamics in the case of districts/municipalities in Indonesia. First, the dynamics behavior of local governance over time is analyzed by visual inspection of their non-parametric density distribution. More deeply, we use Markov chains to predict a pattern of change in local economic governance toward its steady state. Based on comparison between 2007 and 2011 data delivered by …

Environmental Legislation: Factors And Factions, Timothy Luby
Environmental Legislation: Factors And Factions, Timothy Luby
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
In recent years the environment has become an increasingly salient issue, with many citizens calling for higher environmental protection and precautions within the United States. However, it seems that congressmen have become unresponsive to these demands as partisanship progressively becomes the determining factor in environmental voting. This study attempts to discover what factors, along with party, determine a representative’s voting decisions on environmental legislation. By collecting data on United States House members in 2006, 2007, and 2010 and running linear regressions, the most significant factors in predicting House members’ voting patterns are identified; however, party and ideology seem to have …

Stain On The Brain - The David Owen Story, Jody Jackson
Open Access Dissertations
David Owen, Australian child abuse survivor‘s life story spanning seventy years, is a testament to “the will to survive.” Taken from his mother and sent to Neerkol, one of the most notorious government backed Catholic-run orphanages out in the desolate bush of Queensland, he was subjected to extreme abuse, emotionally, physically and sexually. Upon leaving Neerkol, this functionally illiterate young man became a professional Rugby League player and union organizer. He unexpectedly reunited with his mother and became a devoted son. Later in life he courageously challenged the powerful Queensland Government and Catholic Church. A fifty-two-page petition authored by Owen …
Punishment And Work Law Compliance: Lessons From Chile, César F. Rosado Marzán
Punishment And Work Law Compliance: Lessons From Chile, César F. Rosado Marzán
All Faculty Scholarship
Workplace law activists and reformers find it increasingly more difficult to obtain redress for violation of workers’ rights. Some of them are calling for stricter enforcement and tougher penalties to bring employers into compliance. However, after seven and half months of participant observation at the Labor Directorate and the labor courts of Chile, institutions that use punishment as their main tools of enforcement, I am skeptical about the likelihood of success of mere punishment for effective workplace law enforcement and compliance. I am skeptical even though Chile is a country recognized as the Latin American “jaguar” for its successful economy …

Finding A Way Out Of The Ethnographic Paradigm Jungle, Subhadip Roy, Pratyush Banerjee
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a hybrid ethnographic paradigm, taking the best points from the different approaches of ethnographic research. The pioneering proponents of ethnography differed in their conceptualization of the method, resulting in the development of three distinct schools of thought-holistic, semiotic and behavioristic. These three ethnographic paradigms have their respective benefits and shortcomings. Following any one of these approaches may lead to only partial comprehension of the phenomenon by the ethnographer. This study wished to address this issue by developing a best practice approach, which will have the virtues of all the three …

White, Black, And Blue: The Battle Over Black Police, Professionalization, And Police Brutality In Birmingham, Alabama, 1963-1979, Bryan Kessler
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the municipal politics and race relations in Birmingham, Alabama, from October 1963 to November 1979. While Birmingham is a centerpiece of the traditional Civil Rights Movement for its staging of the Bull Connor and Martin Luther King, Jr., confrontation in 1963, there has been little examination of the continuing struggles between the black and white communities in the years after the media spotlight. Of particular concern are the battles between the black community, white power structure, and the city’s police department over black policemen, professionalization and modernization, and police brutality. The changing role and tactics of black …

"On Our Way For The Sunny South, Land Of Chivalry": Northern Imperial Attitudes In The Civil War South, Kaci Nash
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study examines the discourse of Northerners who traveled into the South during the Civil War. Northern soldiers, nurses, teachers, relief workers, and officers’ wives adopted an imperial framework in their encounter with the South. By the eve of the war, years of sectional turmoil had resulted in a perceived ontological separation between the North and the nation’s internal Other—the South. To Northerners, the region was comprised of untamed wilderness, an antiquated society, and an inferior culture. When over two million Northerners mobilized and entered the southern states, they broadly adopted imperial viewpoints and awakened to the cultural power they …
