Constraining The Temperature History Of The Past Millennium Using Early Instrumental Observations, P Brohan, Rob Allan, J. Eric Freeman, D. Wheeler, Clive Wilkinson, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The current assessment that twentieth-century global temperature change is unusual in the context of the last thousand years relies on estimates of temperature changes from natural proxies (tree-rings, ice-cores, etc.) and climate model simulations. Confidence in such estimates is limited by difficulties in calibrating the proxies and systematic differences between proxy reconstructions and model simulations. As the difference between the estimates extends into the relatively recent period of the early nineteenth century it is possible to compare them with a reliable instrumental estimate of the temperature change over that period, provided that enough early thermometer observations, covering a wide enough …

Assessing Devolution In The Canadian North: A Case Study Of The Yukon Territory, Christopher Alcantara, Kirk Cameron, Steven Kennedy
Political Science Faculty Publications
Despite a rich literature on the political and constitutional development of the Canadian territorial North, few scholars have examined the post-devolution environment in Yukon. This lacuna is surprising since devolution is frequently cited as being crucial to the well-being of Northerners, leading both the Government of Nunavut and the Government of the Northwest Territories to lobby the federal government to devolve lands and resources to them. This paper provides an updated historical account of devolution in Yukon and assesses its impact on the territory since 2003. Relying mainly on written resources and 16 interviews with Aboriginal, government, and industry officials …

Reputation As Public Policy For Internet Security, Leigh L. Linden, John S. Quarterman, Qian Tang, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Insufficient resource allocation causes an Internet information security (infosec) problem that public policy could improve. Lack of transparency lets organizations avoid addressing internal risks, leaving vulnerabilities that are exploited by botnets, threatening information security of other Internet participants. Their protection provides no economic benefit to the firm, so this negative externality causes underinvestment in infosec. Public policy could provide a partial solution by adding incentives for organizations to have well-configured infosec. Specifically, mandatory reporting of security issues plus presenting this information to the public, can impose shame and fame on organizations through publicity and peer influence by comparison with major …

Is Portland Really The Place Where Young People Go To Retire? Migration Patterns Of Portland’S Young And College-Educated, 1980-2010, Jason R. Jurjevich, Greg Schrock
Publications, Reports and Presentations
For many metro areas, including Portland, being economically competitive in today’s knowledge and information economy depends on attracting and retaining young, college-‐educated (YCE) migrants. On this indicator, Portland has been most successful: since 1980, the Portland metropolitan region has attracted college-‐educated individuals under the age of 40 at some of the country’s highest net migration rates in good economic times and bad. Though not unique to Portland, the resiliency of Portland’s migration streams, even in periods of economic uncertainty, calls attention to an increasingly selective group of YCE migrants who appear to place greater relative value on non-‐economic factors—from political …

Prior literature has established that international collaboration on R&D is an important means for generating new and impactful ideas through the cross-border integration of knowledge. We show that cross-country collaboration improves not just the resulting ideas, but also has a long-term benefit for the involved inventors in terms of continuing to generate higher-impact ideas in the future. However, our results also show that the improved performance of specific inventors in a multinational corporation subsidiary does not translate to broader subsidiary-level capabilities at innovation. One possible explanation might be that inventors obtaining international exposure often do not develop collaborative ties with …

In this analysis natural systems are posed to subsystemize in a manner facilitating both structured information/energy sharing and an entropy maximization process projecting a three-dimensional, spatial, outcome. Numerical simulations were first carried out to determine whether n × n input-output matrices could, once entropymaximized, project a three-dimensional Euclidean metric. Only 4 × 4 matrices could; a small proportion passed the test. Larger proportions passed when grouped random patterns on and within two- and three-dimensional forms were tested. Topographical patterns within 31 stream basin systems in the state of Kentucky, USA, were then similarly investigated, anticipating that the spatial configuration of …

History As Community-Based Research And The Pedagogy Of Discovery: Teaching Racial Inequality, Documenting Local History, And Building Links Between Students And Communities In Mississippi And Tennessee, Spencer D. Wood, Ricardo Samuel
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
In this article we describe the process of implementing a community-based research project that linked student learning with documenting elements of local histories surrounding the civil rights movement in Mississippi and Tennessee. We show that developing a dialogue among community members, ourselves, and our students worked to democratize the research project, produce strong support among the community members, and contribute to an improved understanding of racial inequality for our students. We rely on our accounts of the process, student journals, and oral histories compiled during the research. Our findings show that there are considerable opportunities for community-based research around documenting …

Workshop On Research And Resource Commons In Scientific Research: Final Report, Michael W. Carroll
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
In November of 2011, the Washington College of Law at American University convened and hosted a two-day workshop in collaboration with the Creative Commons to develop a strategy for promoting a commons or scientific research and related resources. The workshop brought together interested stakeholders from across the scientific research enterprise: scientists, administrators, librarians, publishers, societies, technologists, lawyers, policy makers, students, funders, and Open Science advocates, including both U.S. and international representatives. This diverse group discussed the current state of policy and technology as it relates to a scientific research commons, and identified key opportunities and challenges, as well as next …

Researching Indonesian Students’ Attitude Towards Foreign Language, Ardi Marwan
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Foreign language attitude plays a significant role in enhancing one’s motivation to learn a particular foreign language. This study aims to obtain an understanding of Indonesian students’ attitudes toward the Japanese language. The data were collected from 160 students learning Japanese. The Foreign Language Attitude Questionnaire (FLAQ), originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980), was used in this study. In addition, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) based on the results of FLAQ factor analysis were incorporated into the current research. The findings indicate that the majority of students showed positive attitudes toward the Japanese language, with no …

111 1st Street Jersey City, Nj: The Life And Death Of An Arts Community, David Goodwin
111 1st Street Jersey City, Nj: The Life And Death Of An Arts Community, David Goodwin
Urban Studies Masters Theses
For nearly twenty years, 111 1st Street, a former tobacco warehouse, stood as the vibrant center of the arts community in Jersey City, New Jersey. The owner of 111 1st Street evicted its resident artists in 2005 and demolished the building in 2007. Artists are often viewed as an integral component to the gentrification process. However, the case of 111 1st Street suggests a possible alteration to the typical, gradual process of gentrification and challenges the established scholarship on the relationship between artists and gentrification. This thesis will use interviews and original research to recreate the narrative …
Seasonality & The Local Food System: The Role Of Seasons In Local Food Education In New York City, Sarah Benoit
Seasonality & The Local Food System: The Role Of Seasons In Local Food Education In New York City, Sarah Benoit
Urban Studies Masters Theses
Much of the current research on global and local food insecurity – particularly among poor urban populations – strongly suggests that the impacts of industrial agriculture and the American fast food culture has been detrimental to both urban and rural populations, and to small farmers. Food insecurity and unequal access to healthy and affordable food are critical issues in the metropolis. In response to these concerns, there has been a great deal of mobilization around the concept of local and regional food systems. Food systems analysis examines the viability, equitability, and sustainability of the life cycle of the local food …

Waterfront Redevelopment At South Street Seaport: Where Water And Land, Collaboration And Planning Converge, Kathryn Anne Lorico Tipora
Urban Studies Masters Theses
With a new analytic approach to waterfront space and the incorporation of community-based planning in the process, urban planning can be used as a tool in the social and environmental justice movement for a more livable and accessible city. I will identify the benefits and challenges of an interdisciplinary approach to planning and developing waterfronts by 1) analyzing the history and past redevelopments of South Street Seaport, an essential step to understanding any urban space; 2) identifying the benefits and challenges of an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to planning and developing urban waterfronts; and 3) providing a possible explanation for …

Managing coral reefs for resilience to climate change is a popular concept but has been difficult to implement because the empirical scientific evidence has either not been evaluated or is sometimes unsupportive of theory, which leads to uncertainty when considering methods and identifying priority reefs. We asked experts and reviewed the scientific literature for guidance on the multiple physical and biological factors that affect the ability of coral reefs to resist and recover from climate disturbance. Eleven key factors to inform decisions based on scaling scientific evidence and the achievability of quantifying the factors were identified. Factors important to resistance …

High Road Development In A Low Tech Industry: Policymakers, Producer Networks, And The Co-Production Of Innovation In The Mexican Ceramics Sector, Steven Samford
Political Science ETDs
When faced with the integration of international markets, some small producers in the developing world respond with low road' strategies that undermine wages and working conditions while others take the 'high road' to become globally competitive. Existing explanations — macroeconomic policy, human capital development, geography — are unable to account for this variation both across and within sectors. I address this variation by examining workshop-level responses to a government effort to develop and disseminate a lead-free glaze in the Mexican ceramics sector. Many producers have failed to adopt the glaze despite the fact that it promises to improve both their …

Vers Une Ecocritique Postcoloniale Africaine: L’Environnement Dans Les Litteratures Africaines De Langue Française, Marie Chantale Mofin Noussi
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This work was motivated by two major facts: the African environment is at the heart of the continents relationships with colonialism, neocolonialism and globalization; but there is not enough literary emphasis on this environmental centrality. This work contributes in bridging the gap between African Francophone Literatures and the environmental discourses. This dissertation is the literary analysis of the representation, the transformation, and the exploitation of the African environment in the operating policies of colonial, neocolonial and global power structures. These environmental policies in the colonial and current global world tend to mold the African environment in a way that the …
