Education and Culture
The following is a graduation address given at the Adult Degree Program of Vermont College by faculty member, Martha VanderWolk. The Adult Degree Program, now located at Vermont College of Union Institute and University, the oldest external degree program for adults in the United States, celebrating its 40th birthday this year [2003], is based in student-centered independent study. At graduations, a faculty member is asked to give the address and students are handed their diplomas by friends or family members who have supported them during their years as a student.
The Ecological Dimension Of Natalia Toledo Paz’S Poetry, Ida Day
The Ecological Dimension Of Natalia Toledo Paz’S Poetry, Ida Day
Modern Languages Faculty Research
This essay explores the position and contribution of Natalia Toledo Paz, one of the most recognized contemporary poets in the native languages of Mexico, to the field of environmental ethics in local and global contexts. I focus on her bilingual works, written in Spanish and Zapotec, Ca gunaa gubidxa, ca gunaa guiiba’risaca/Mujeres de sol, mujeres de oro (2002) and Guie’yaase’/Olivo negro (2005), which revive the traditions, the poet’s memories, the nature, and the spirituality of her native Juchitán. Her focus on the Juchitec women have extended and deepened the mission of contemporary indigenous writers by incorporating the concerns of Latin …
The Diet Of Western Burrowing Owls In An Urban Landscape, Lynne A. Trulio, Philip Higgins
The Diet Of Western Burrowing Owls In An Urban Landscape, Lynne A. Trulio, Philip Higgins
Western North American Naturalist
While we know much about the diet of Western Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) in many of their more natural habitats, little is known about their diets in urban environments. We analyzed pellets and prey remains collected at burrows used by Burrowing Owls living in urban grasslands in Santa Clara County, California. We hypothesized that the composition of prey species in the diet of these urban owls would differ from that of owls living in agricultural and more-natural western habitats and, in particular, that rodents would be a smaller component of the diet. We found the invertebrate-to-vertebrate ratio …

Biodiversity, Water Chemistry, Physical Characteristics, And Anthropogenic Disturbance Gradients Of Sandstone Springs On The Colorado Plateau, Rebecca H. Weissinger, Dustin W. Perkins, Eric C. Dinger
Western North American Naturalist
Springs located on the Colorado Plateau are highly threatened and represent a small percentage of the landscape; yet they are disproportionately important to diverse native flora and fauna. The relationships between anthropogenic disturbance, aquatic macroinvertebrate species composition, and environmental variables at these springs have received little study. We selectively visited 40 sandstone springs in southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado to span a range of impacts. We classified the springs into impact categories based on a spring impact score, and we measured biodiversity (aquatic macroinvertebrates), water chemistry (nutrients, dissolved O2, pH, specific conductivity, temperature, turbidity, coliform bacteria [Escherichia …

Prevalence And Antimicrobial Agent Susceptibility Of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus In Healthy Pediatric Outpatients In Las Vegas, Echezona E. Ezeanolue, Mark P. Buttner, Patricia Cruz, Joanne L. Henry, Chad L. Cross, Linda D. Stetzenbach
Nevada Journal of Public Health
Colonization and infection by community-associated resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus are being reported in epidemic proportions. The purpose of this study was to determine the local prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization in children and to characterize the MRSA isolates in the laboratory with regard to antimicrobial agent susceptibility patterns, and the presence of the mecA and the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes. Nasal swabs were collected at two pediatric clinics from a total of 505 children during health maintenance visits. A brief questionnaire was administered to collect demographic data and pertinent medical, family, and social history. Samples were cultured …

The Surface Distribution Of Oil Spills, The Environmental Status Of The Visoka Oilfield, Its Rehabilitation Ways: Case Study, Nevton Kodhelaj, Aida Bode, Piro Zoga, Nevina Koja, Esmeralda Zeqo, Dulian Zeqiraj
UBT International Conference
Visoka oilfield was explored in 1963 through the well G-622. In this oilfield had been drilled more than 170 production wells. Through all this years of its exploitation, mainly because of the outdated technology, the environmental pollution reached really dramatic values. The pollution extends on the Visoka village, affecting so the life for the entire community. The oil spills, the gas emissions and the formation water affected and polluted and ―k illed‖ the Gjanica River, its delta and the Adriatic coast in the Semani beach. Due to the technology and the completely wrong policies, used in the past, the wells …

Modified Edf Goodness Of Fit Tests For Logistic Distribution Under Srs And Rss, S. A. Al-Subh, M. T. Alodat, Kamaruzaman Ibrahim, Abdul Aziz Jemain
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Modified forms of goodness of fit tests are presented for the logistic distribution using statistics based on the empirical distribution function (EDF). A method to improve the power of the modified EDF goodness of fit tests is introduced based on Ranked Set sampling (RSS). Data are collected via the Ranked Set Sampling (RSS) technique (McIntyre, 1952). Critical values for the logistic distribution with unknown parameters are provided and the powers of the tests are given for a number of alternative distributions. A simulation study is presented to illustrate the power of the new method.

Globalization And Shanghai Model: A Retrospective And Prospective Analysis, Linsun Cheng Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Intended to shed light on the debate on the results of globalization and provide better understanding of the influences of globalization upon China as well as the world, this article traces the history of Shanghai’s economic globalization over the past 170 years since 1843 and demonstrates the benefits and problems Shanghai received from (or connected to) its economic globalization. Divided into three sections (Globalization, de-globalization and re-globalization of Shanghai’s economy; Manufacturing-Oriented vs. Tertiary-oriented—Shanghai’s Double Priority Strategy of Economic Growth; Free market, state enterprises, and Shanghai’s mixed economy) the article summarizes and analyzes several characteristics that made Shanghai a unique model …
