West Of Eden: Resource Wars And Nature-Cultures In The American West, Scout Calvert Mar 2012

West Of Eden: Resource Wars And Nature-Cultures In The American West, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The richness and variety of the western landscape is what is at stake in hot political contests for the resources of the West: much of this public land is available to economic activity, including for mining, grazing, logging, and recreation. These uses threaten to outpace the land’s ability to renew these resources along with others, like air and water. Now in the first decade of the millennium with a new environmental awareness emerging partly from media coverage of global warming and peak oil, The American West at Risk offers a wide-ranging look at the degradation of the environment in the …

Survival And Growth Factors Affecting Community-Planted Urban Street Trees, Emily J. Jack-Scott Feb 2012

Survival And Growth Factors Affecting Community-Planted Urban Street Trees, Emily J. Jack-Scott

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban street trees face adverse growing conditions: compacted soils, extreme heat, lack of nutrients, drought, car damage and vandalism. Limited funding, however, is cited by urban tree-planting organizations as their major obstacle. To maximize budgets, many organizations along the eastern United States have planted bare root trees as a less expensive alternative to balled-and-burlapped (B&B) trees. Existing research indicates equivalent survival rates between bare root and B&B trees; but no research has examined this in community group-planted urban street trees. Bare root trees are additionally advantageous in community-based plantings because they are much lighter and easier for volunteers to handle. …

Effects Of Vegetation, Corridor Width And Regional Land Use On Early Successional Birds On Powerline Corridors, Robert A. Askins, Corrine M. Folsom-O'Keefe, Margaret C. Hardy Feb 2012

Effects Of Vegetation, Corridor Width And Regional Land Use On Early Successional Birds On Powerline Corridors, Robert A. Askins, Corrine M. Folsom-O'Keefe, Margaret C. Hardy

Biology Faculty Publications

Powerline rights-of-way (ROWs) often provide habitat for early successional bird species that have suffered long-term population declines in eastern North America. To determine how the abundance of shrubland birds varies with habitat within ROW corridors and with land use patterns surrounding corridors, we ran Poisson regression models on data from 93 plots on ROWs and compared regression coefficients. We also determined nest success rates on a 1-km stretch of ROW. Seven species of shrubland birds were common in powerline corridors. However, the nest success rates for prairie warbler (Dendroica discolor) and field sparrow (Spizella pusilla) were

On Metaphor And Progress: Nature In Literature And Landscape Painting In 19th-Century America (Flyer), Rochelle Johnson Feb 2012

On Metaphor And Progress: Nature In Literature And Landscape Painting In 19th-Century America (Flyer), Rochelle Johnson

The Idea of Nature Public Lecture Series

In the mid-nineteenth century, artists and writers consciously worked together to express the power of the natural landscapes comprising their young nation, the United States. Artistic techniques informed literature, just as literary techniques informed landscape painting. The stories that both writers and artists told figured the landscape as a site of progress, resulting in fascinating uses of metaphor that continue to inform our ideas of nature.
