Marine Worm And Molluscan Habitat On The Gulf Of Maine, Lydia Ball
Marine Worm And Molluscan Habitat On The Gulf Of Maine, Lydia Ball
Atlas of Maine
Marine worms and mollusks are important prey items for shorebirds and humans. Additionally, humans also use marine worms and mollusks as bait. This causes competition between shorebirds and humans. This map shows important habitat of marine worms and mollusks.

Effects Of Visitation On Reid State Park In Georgetown, Me, Meagan Hennessey
Effects Of Visitation On Reid State Park In Georgetown, Me, Meagan Hennessey
Atlas of Maine
Maine State Parks are in their 77th year, providing public access to a variety of scenic views, picnicking opportunities, freshwater and saltwater swimming, hiking, camping and a variety of other activities.1 These opportunities allow individuals to experience relatively undeveloped nature and can protect habitat for a variety of wildlife. On the other hand, concentrating large amounts of people in these natural areas can lead to degradation, and should be monitored closely and managed to the greatest ability.
In 2010, Reid State Park, in Georgetown, Maine was the most visited Maine State Park for day use, with 181,149 visitors.2 The Park …

Atlas Of Maine: Essential Seabird Habitats Of The Gulf Of Maine, Michael Whalen
Atlas of Maine
This map relates seabird nesting habitats with the biophysical regions of coastal Maine. Layers were downloaded from the Maine office of GIS. Biophysical Regions characterize geologic features, climate, soil type, and flora, all of which can affect biodiversity within the region. Seabird Nesting Islands host myriad species including Great Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Laughing Gulls, Black Guillemots, Razorbills, Atlantic Puffins, Common Terns, Arctic Terns and the critically endangered Roseate Tern. Also represented are overlapping critical habitats for Least Terns and Piping Plovers, the former of which is endangered in the state of Maine. Note that Habitat representations are enlarged for …

Critical Reflections On Experiential Learning For Food Justice, Leslie C. Gray, Joanna Johnson, Nicole Latham, Michelle Tang, Ann Thomas
Critical Reflections On Experiential Learning For Food Justice, Leslie C. Gray, Joanna Johnson, Nicole Latham, Michelle Tang, Ann Thomas
Environmental Studies and Sciences
This essay will reflect on Santa Clara University's (SCU) forays into experiential learning around food justice through the Bronco Urban Gardens (BUG) program. BUG works with urban schools and a community center in San José, California, using a garden-based education approach. This program emerged out of our student garden, The Forge. University student farms and gardens provide opportunities for students to learn how to grow, manage, and market food. At Santa Clara University, our half-acre (0.2 hectare) garden plays that role. However, because of our institution's commitment to social justice and a strong network of community partners, our campus garden …

Impacts Of Climate Change On Hydrology And Water Resources In The Boise And Spokane River Basins, Xin Jin, Venkataramana Sridhar
Impacts Of Climate Change On Hydrology And Water Resources In The Boise And Spokane River Basins, Xin Jin, Venkataramana Sridhar
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the Pacific Northwest, warming climate has resulted in a lengthened growing season, declining snowpack, and earlier timing of spring runoff. This study characterizes the impact of climate change in two basins in Idaho, the Spokane River and the Boise River basins. We simulated the basin-scale hydrology by coupling the downscaled precipitation and temperature outputs from a suite of global climate models and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), between 2010 and 2060 and assess the impacts of climate change on water resources in the region. For the Boise River basin, changes in precipitation ranged from −3.8 to 36%. …

How To Describe And Propagate Uncertainty When Processing Time Series: Metrological And Computational Challenges, With Potential Applications To Environmental Studies, Christian Servin, Martine Ceberio, Aline Jaimes, Craig Tweedie, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Time series comes from measurements, and measurements are never absolutely accurate. Traditionally, when we deal with an individual measurement or with a sample of measurement results, we subdivide a measurement error into random and systematic components: systematic error does not change from measurement to measurement which random errors corresponding to different measurements are independent. In time series, when we measure the same quantity at different times, we can also have correlation between measurement errors corresponding to nearby moments of time. To capture this correlation, environmental science researchers proposed to consider the third type of measurement errors: periodic. This extended classification …

Returning To The Homeland: The Migratory Patterns Between Brazil And Japan For Japanese-Brazilians, Yoko Baba, Claudio G. Vera Sanchez Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Migration to well-off countries has been well documented. However, the reasons why migrants return to their home countries, which often face severe economic disadvantages, are examined less frequently. The return migration of Japanese-Brazilians (Brazilian citizens of ethnic Japanese descent) who migrate to Japan and return again to Brazil has not been studied to any great extent. To understand the factors associated with Japanese-Brazilians’ return migration, using Gmelch's (1983) model of push and pull factors, we examined what motivated Japanese-Brazilian migrant laborers to return to Brazil from Japan. With a mixed method including in-person interviews, a total of n=47 Brazilian migrants …
International Security, Development, And Human Rights: Policy Conversion Or Conflict?, Miao-Ling Lin Hasenkamp
International Security, Development, And Human Rights: Policy Conversion Or Conflict?, Miao-Ling Lin Hasenkamp
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article uses an institutional network governance approach to explore the overlapping dimension of the policy fields between security, development, and human rights, reflected in the US and German provincial reconstruction teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan. The past two decades have witnessed a gradually changing paradigm in academic and policy debates regarding the questions of the normative basis of world order and possibilities for tackling imminent threats to security and peace (i.e. intra-state armed conflicts, failed states, terrorism, poverty, and deepening inequality). The introduction of concepts such as “human security” and “the right to humanitarian intervention/responsibility to protect (R2P)” as well …
