Educationally Recovering Dewey In Curriculum, William H. Schubert Oct 2012

Educationally Recovering Dewey In Curriculum, William H. Schubert

Education and Culture

To educationally recover something (or somebody, as the title suggests vis-a-vis Dewey) invokes at least two assumptions: (1) that it has been covered before, thus, it can be recovered; and (2) that it somehow increases perspec-tive, insight, or understanding, and is therefore educational. Clearly, the work of John Dewey permeates the literature of curriculum studies. On numerous occasions (Schubert, 1980, 1982a, 1982c, 1986a) I have discussed an experientalist tradition in curriculum discourse that stems from writings of Francis W. Parker, William James, and principally John Dewey. It is developed through the writings of Boyd Bode, Harold Rugg, George …

Religion, The State And The Schools: Reflections On The Deweyan Perspective, Allan C. Carlson Oct 2012

Religion, The State And The Schools: Reflections On The Deweyan Perspective, Allan C. Carlson

Education and Culture

Historical consciousness among Americans today does not run very deep. We tend to confront each public issue as though it was emerging for the first time, divorced from the earlier history of the nation. Contemporary debate on the relationship between church, state and school is no exception.

When history is called in at all, it is usually for rhetorical purposes. Those arguing against school prayer or tuition tax credits go to great lengths to cast Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and other founders of the American nation as largely secularized "free thinkers," or as Deists "at worst." Those pressing for enhanced …

Cocaine-Induced Reinstatement Of A Conditioned Place Preference In Developing Rats: Involvement Of The D2 Receptor, Kimberly A. Badanich, Cheryl L. Kirstein

Psychology Faculty Publications

Reinstatement of conditioned place preferences have been used to investigate physiological mechanisms mediating drug-seeking behavior in adolescent and adult rodents; however, it is still unclear how psychostimulant exposure during adolescence affects neuron communication and whether these changes would elicit enhanced drug-seeking behavior later in adulthood. The present study determined whether the effects of intra-ventral tegmental area (VTA) or intra-nucleus accumbens septi (NAcc) dopamine (DA) D2 receptor antagonist infusions would block (or potentiate) cocaine-induced reinstatement of conditioned place preferences. Adolescent rats (postnatal day (PND 28–39)) were trained to express a cocaine place preference. The involvement of D2 receptors on cocaine-induced reinstatement …

Towards Liberalization Of Services In Asean: Challenges And Opportunities Of Asean Framework Agreement On Services (Afas) On Tourism, Ign Parikesit Widiatedja Oct 2012

Towards Liberalization Of Services In Asean: Challenges And Opportunities Of Asean Framework Agreement On Services (Afas) On Tourism, Ign Parikesit Widiatedja

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The proliferation of liberalisation has been historically generated by the establishment of World Trade Organisation (WTO). Services sector was comprehensively regulated by General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). Regionally, AFAS was initially established to bolster the objective of GATS. In inward looking perspective, AFAS has underscored the increasing participation of ASEAN member states through strengthening their domestic services capacity, efficiency, and competitiveness. In outward looking perspective, it was intended to eliminate progressively any restrictions and internal governmental regulations in the transaction of services whose impact eventually emerged trade harassment. As a legally binding sector under GATS and AFAS, tourism …

Creating A Sustainable Inter-City Asean Football League, Regional Television Programming Network, (Content/Ip Industry) Sports Tourism And Travel Industry And Developing Principles For A Legal Framework To Achieve Economic And Socio-Cultural Integration, Lim Peng Han

Indonesian Journal of International Law

China is poised to be the second largest economy in the world and investment will continue flowing into its growing affluent and gigantic domestic market. It is not surprising that the total inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into ASEAN from the years 2007 to 2009 significantly shrunk from US$74.3 billion to US$39.6 billion. In 2010 ASEAN broadcasters paid a total of US$182 million to enable 6 million subscribers to watch the English Premier League (EPL) games. ASEAN has the means to go on the offensive by creating its own Inter-City Football League consisting of 20 cities and 380 matches …

Towards A Common Agreement On Educational Cooperation On Human Rights Education In Asean To Promote Human Rights Awareness For The Youth, Ni Gusti Ayu Dyah Satyawati

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The development of human resources through closer cooperation in education and life-long learning is one of ASEAN purposes as stipulated in the Article 1 Paragraph (10) of the ASEAN Charter. In the Cha-am Hua Hin Declaration on Strengthening Cooperation on Education to Achieve an ASEAN Caring and Sharing Community, the Heads of State and Government of ASEAN agreed to give greater emphasis on the principles of democracy, respect for human rights and peace-oriented values in the school curriculum. Indeed, that is an important action to strengthen the role of education in building the ASEAN Community by 2015. One of the …

Regional Variation In Aortic At1b Receptor Mrna Abundance Is Associated With Contractility But Unrelated To Atherosclerosis And Aortic Aneurysms, Aruna Poduri, A. Phillip Owens, Deborah A. Howatt, Jessica J. Moorleghen, Anju Balakrishnan, Lisa A. Cassis, Alan Daugherty

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin II (AngII), the main bioactive peptide of the renin angiotensin system, exerts most of its biological actions through stimulation of AngII type 1 (AT1) receptors. This receptor is expressed as 2 structurally similar subtypes in rodents, termed AT1a and AT1b. Although AT1a receptors have been studied comprehensively, roles of AT1b receptors in the aorta have not been defined.

METHODOLOGY/RESULTS: We initially compared the regional distribution of AT1b receptor mRNA with AT1a receptor mRNA in the aorta. mRNA abundance of both subtypes increased from the proximal to the distal aorta, with the greatest abundance in the infra-renal region. Corresponding …

Educational Adequacy In Arkansas: Funding, Reed Greenwood Oct 2012

Educational Adequacy In Arkansas: Funding, Reed Greenwood

Arkansas Education Reports

The public education system in Arkansas has undergone a significant transformation during the past ten years. This has come about as a result of several factors including the passage and implementation of federal legislation known as the No Child Left Behind Act, the ruling by the Arkansas Supreme Court in the Lake View case, and the legislation and executive decisions resulting from the efforts to create an equitable and adequate system of public education in the state.
