Password-Authenticated Two-Party Key Exchange With Long-Term Security, Weizheng. Gao Jan 2012

Password-Authenticated Two-Party Key Exchange With Long-Term Security, Weizheng. Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the design of two-party key exchange it is common to rely on a Die-Hellman type hardness assumption in connection with elliptic curves. Unlike the case of nite elds, breaking multiple instances of the underlying hardness assumption is here considered substantially more expensive than breaking a single instance. Prominent protocols such as SPEKE [12] or J-PAKE [8, 9, 10] do not exploit this, and here we propose a password-authenticated key establishment where the security builds on the intractability of solving a specied number of instances v of the underlying computational problem. Such a design strategy seems particularly interesting when aiming …

Oranges And Inlets, Nathaniel Osborn Jan 2012

Oranges And Inlets, Nathaniel Osborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Nineteenth century settlers in Florida's Indian River Lagoon (IRL) region created an isolated fringe culture wholly dependent on the instable hydrological forces of the shallow lagoon system. These settlers were among the first to construct a built environment market by the dredging and filling that would define much of the twentieth century Sunshine State. There has been no period when the liminal IRL ecosystem was not without shifting barrier islands and dramatically varying salinity levels due primarily to the oceanic interchange following the opening and closing of natural inlets. This paper suggests that attempts to "restore" the lagoon will necessarily …

Not What You Think, Steven S. Parkin Jan 2012

Not What You Think, Steven S. Parkin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Perceiver's use of thought suppression to maintain a consistent attitude toward another person ironically leads to nonlinear changes in their evaluations over time. In this study of interpersonal evaluation, 157 participants across three conditions (high-level mindset, low-level mindset, and control) observe the same person in seven counter-balanced videotaped social interactions depicting helpful, rude, and ambiguous behaviors. The high-level prime instructed participants to focus on the target's goals and intentions ; low-level participants focused on the target's specific concrete behaviors. High-level participants better resisted the influence of conflicting information by surpressing thoughts inconsistent with their initial evaluation of the target. From …

Language Production And Comprehension In Bilingual Children, Krystal M. Ribot Jan 2012

Language Production And Comprehension In Bilingual Children, Krystal M. Ribot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Many adults who have dual language experience describe themselves as "passive bilinguals," able to understand two languages, but speak only one. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between language production and comprehension in bilingual children in order to determine whether bilingual comprehension is more readily achieved than production. ... Productive and receptive skills in both languages were assessed using standardized tests. Children's relative amount of exposure to each language, as well as their language choice during production was measured via interview with the primary caregiver.... Language exposure as measured via dominance in one language over another …

Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond Jan 2012

Chimpanzee Alarm Communications, Alyssa M. Raymond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Evidence for conceptual semantics is well established in monkeys, however this basis of human language is less evident in the great apes. In order to study semantic communications in chimpanzees, I analyzed alarm calls produced towards a blimp as it was flying overhead. I then replayed a set of these alarm calls to the chimps on a different day. The chimps appeared to act in a manner consistent with the presence of the blimp. The calls they produced in response to the playback stimuli were nearly identical to the calls that were produced during the actual flyover. Though the data …

Cultural Perspectives Among Children Of Guatemalan Maya Immigrants In Lake Worth, Florida, Tara. Sprague Jan 2012

Cultural Perspectives Among Children Of Guatemalan Maya Immigrants In Lake Worth, Florida, Tara. Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Every day children of Guatemalan Maya immigrants balance two cultures. They reside in The United States and attend American schools but are being raised by their Guatemalan Maya parents. They continually navigate between the two and are faced with challenges daily. Since these children are influenced by two cultures, my interest was primarily on the cultural perspectives of these children, more specifically: what effects does the new culture have on the old? Through volunteering at a Guatemalan Maya after-school program, interviewing and administering the Children's Apperception Test, results showed these children to be influenced by American culture. The biggest indicator, …

Dante's Influence On Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, Alisa Tunis Jan 2012

Dante's Influence On Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, Alisa Tunis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Although the critic C. S. Lewis observes there is an allusive relationship between the final cantos of Dante‟s Purgatory and the third act of Shelley‟s Prometheus Unbound, no detailed analysis of Dante‟s language in Purgatory XXX and XXXI as a specific influence on Shelley‟s construction of imaginary realms in Acts II and III of the lyrical drama Prometheus Unbound exists. In this study, I will show how Shelley borrows from Dante‟s language in Purgatory XXX and XXXI, especially Dante‟s preoccupation with the cold as a form of punishment, to create the feeling of oppression and then liberation, in Acts II …

Development Of Global-Mindedness, Maria. Hersey Jan 2012

Development Of Global-Mindedness, Maria. Hersey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the development of global-mindedness (GM) in the leadership of primary schools offering international educational programs around the world with an emphasis on the need for school leaders that understand and support the development of a critical, global perspective of education. Reported findings identified the presence of the five dimensions of global-mindedness as well as the relationships between demographic variables such as travel experience, second language ability, and years of teaching experience. The findings also reported positive relationships between the subscales of Hett's (1993) Global-Mindedness Scale and the attributes of international-mindedness as …

Divine Alchemy In Paradise Lost, Andrea J. Rutherford Jan 2012

Divine Alchemy In Paradise Lost, Andrea J. Rutherford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines the themes of alchemy and transformation in Paradise Lost and seventeenth-century thought. Beginning with an overvieiw of the historical roots of alchemy, this study analyzes the ancient, underlying philosophical concepts that marital union produces the birth of the soul and that destruction is necessary for this birth. Alchemical references identified in Paradise Lost include animal lore and direct alchemical images, which demonstrate Milton's knowledge of alchemy and his deliberate use of the alchemical metaphor. These themes support the proposal that Milton, a Christian humanist, uses alchemy as a metaphor described in this study as "divine alchemy," which …

Earth, Water, And Black Bodies, Pauline P. Anderson Jan 2012

Earth, Water, And Black Bodies, Pauline P. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project focuses on the natural elements earth and water as presented in the works of African American author Toni Morrison. The primary texts analyzed are Sula, Song of Solomon, and Beloved. In the first two novels, Morrison alludes to the abuse of black bodies by drawing parallels between the destruction of trees and the negative effects of urbanization. I argue that environmental destruction and urbanization parallels the disenfranchisement and killing of black bodies. Water in Beloved connotes bondage because of its historical link to the Triangular Trade. However, considering Morrison's frequent mention of water and the fugitives' constant need …

Ecstatic Whitman, Ryan. Frabrizio Jan 2012

Ecstatic Whitman, Ryan. Frabrizio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines Walt Whitman's use of the body in his poetry as a location for spiritual experience, and how his use of the body bears strong connection to its use by medieval Persian Sufi poets. The first chapter focuses upon Sufi poetry's role as a shared point of interest between Whitman and his onetime mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson. Their differing philosophies regarding the cultivation of the soul caused them to absorb Sufi ideas into their own bodies of work in separate ways, and contributed to the split that eventually occurred between them. The second chapter focuses upon connections between …

Educational Tobacco Intervention, Kelley E. Rhoads Jan 2012

Educational Tobacco Intervention, Kelley E. Rhoads

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this study was to determine whether an educational tobacco intervention impacted college students' perceptions relative to tobacco, self-efficacy, and perceived stress levels. The Health Belief Model (HBM) provided a theoretical framework to distinguish differences relative to tobacco between groups. Both the control (N=155) and intervention (N=184) group consisted of a convenience sample of students from a 2000-level health course. A pre- and post-test questionnaire was administered to both groups which included questions regarding demographics, tobacco use, HBM, self-efficacy, and perceived stress. Data analysis included frequency counts, confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and two-way ANOVA. Two-way ANOVA results …

Effects Of Language Proficiency And Task Type On Executive Function And Working Memory Performance In Bilingual Adults, Laxmi N. Lalwani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research shows that bilingualism confers substantial cognitive benefits in children and the elderly. Bilingual advantages on nonverbal working memory, updating, shifting and inhibition tasks are widely reported. However, advantages are not always observed in young adults. These disparities may be due to varied proficiency levels and task types (verbal versus nonverbal) administered. This study sought to detect bilingual performance advantages on executive function and working memory tasks (verbal and nonverbal working memory, updating, shifting and inhibition tasks) between groups of 37 high and 37 low proficiency Spanish-English bilingual and 40 English monolingual young adults. ... Young adulthood may represent a …

Fight For Education, Fight For Freedom, Samantha. Messinger Jan 2012

Fight For Education, Fight For Freedom, Samantha. Messinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The three novels examined in this thesis do not deal with the subject of slavery directly; however, I argue that, much like slave narratives, they all depict oppressive master/slave relationships and feature protagonists who fight for freedom through literacy and/or education. This thesis outlines three contemporary novels that take place during or after the Civil Rights Movement, what I call "freedom narratives," that not only signify on, but pay tribute to, the slave and neo-slave narrative tradition. These novels borrow from the tradition, not only in terms of structure, but also in terms of plot, point of view, theme, and …

Gaze To Discover, Tabitha. Pennekamp Jan 2012

Gaze To Discover, Tabitha. Pennekamp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Gaze to discover is the approach a viewer should take as s/he encounters the work within this exhibition. The main idea is that the work should be interactive. Developing this interaction is the objective of each piece. To engage viewers to interact with a piece of art coincides with the ability to acquire their undivided attention. The realization that it is difficult for a viewer to have a tangible interaction with artwork in a gallery setting leads to asking the viewer to interact visually, "to look fixedly" - to gaze (Webster's Dictionary). Gazing at the work will direct the viewer …

Gender, Disability, And Literature In The Global South, Tulasi. Acharya Jan 2012

Gender, Disability, And Literature In The Global South, Tulasi. Acharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis explores gender, disability and literature in the Global South through an examination of the writings of two physically disabled contemporary women writers from Nepal, BIshnu Kumari Waiwa and Jhamak Ghimire. I show how these renowned contemporary writers challenge stigmas of the disabled body by deconstructiong the "ideology of ability" through their poetry, fiction, and autobiographical narratives. Religious and cultural values disable women's autonomy in general, and create even greater disadvantages for women who are physically disabled. Challenging these cultural stigmas, Waiwa and Ghimire celebrate sexuality and disability as sources of creativity, agency, and identity in narratives that deconstruct …

Heaven's Fertile Soil, Ashley. Santy Jan 2012

Heaven's Fertile Soil, Ashley. Santy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis explores W.P. Kinsella's emphasis on love for land, family, and baseball in discussing relationships between characters in his short story "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa". Chapter I introduces the characters, their role in establishing this as a tale of conservation through agrarianism, and how Kinsella's choice to write a positive story creates unique potential for healing. Chapter II establishes similarities between the father's war experiences and Jackson's exile from baseball, underscoring its mythic importance. Chapter III examines the relationship between the protagonist and his wife, and how their relationship symbolically fosters love for nature through farming, and …

Hope On The Horizon, Valorie. Ebert Jan 2012

Hope On The Horizon, Valorie. Ebert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project considers the future, and the hope for humanity within three dystopian science fiction works : Mordecai Roshwald's Level 7, Cordwainer Smith's "The Dead Lady of Clown Town," and James Tiptree, Jr.,'s "The GIrl Who Was Plugged In". There are many aspects and different manifestations of hope in science fiction, even in authors who show readers the darkest side of human nature and what will become of humans, and by default earth, if an effort is not made to change the world's direction. Though some dystopian stories show horrible possible futures, there is an underlying hope within these stories …

Housing Identity, Stephanie Derisi Jan 2012

Housing Identity, Stephanie Derisi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis represents a study of The Years by Virginia Woolf and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Both novels attempt to redefine the role of women in patriarchal society during the 1930s. The domestic role women had to fill within a masculine household constrained their ability to form an independent "self," apart from fathers and husbands. I argue that these novels articulate the possibility for women to access an independent self by examining the meaning behind domestic objects in and of the house. Lucy Irigaray asserts that women were, and still are, associated with being valued as a desirable "commodity". …

The purpose of this study was to discover how ethnicity, gender, and mentoring influenced the career experiences of Jamaican administrators in Sunshine County Public Schools (SCPS), a pseudonym that was used for a large public school district in Florida. This qualitative, phenomenological study focused on the career experiences of eight Jamaican administrators in SCPS. Seven of the participants were all native-born Jamaicans and one was a first generation Jamaican, born in England to Jamaican parents and raised in Jamaica until the age of 14. The researcher gained this understanding by interviewing participants in-depth about how their Jamaican ethnicity, gender, and …

Humdrum Aha!, Dana Odwazny Pell Jan 2012

Humdrum Aha!, Dana Odwazny Pell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Following the work of Sara Houghton-Walker and Edward Strickland, this thesis theorizes the "mundane sublime" as encountered in romanticist John Clare's poetry. Instead of being oriented upward, as with Longinus's elevatory sublime, Clare's mundane sublime brings the subject downward to earth. While the sublime of the Burkean tradition begins with terror, I claim that the mundane sublime emerges out of love for that which is commonplace. Still revelatory, it may be further characterized by an engagement with ecosystems, eternity, divinity, and nature as a whole. Clare's style scaffolds images resulting in a profusion of detail that arrests the mind and …

Impact Of Fluency Intervention On The Oral Reading And Fluency Comprehension Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Janice M. Russell Jan 2012

Impact Of Fluency Intervention On The Oral Reading And Fluency Comprehension Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Janice M. Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Proficient reading is a necessary skill for a quality life. While educators would like to believe that most students master the art of reading and can understand what they read, national reports indicate that learning to read and becoming a skilled reader is not mastered by all (No Child Left Behind Act, 2001 ; NICHD, 2000a). One component of successful reading is the ability to read a text with appropriate speed, accuracy, and prosody. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (Pinnell et al., 1995) reported that 44% of the nation's fourth grade students were not able to read at an …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the past 25 years, Palm Beach County has acquired more than 31 million acres of public preserves consisting of numerous native habitats that are home to threatened and endangered flora and fauna. Both endemic habitats and plant species benefit from expansion and connectivity through the adoption of native plants in surrounding areas. The next step in conserving these protected, larger areas is to identify ways to connect them in order to reduce their isolation and improve their likelihood of continued ecosystem health. This study aims to perform an analysis using a GIS database of Palm Beach County's Eastern urban …

Constitutional Gaps In Bankruptcy, S. Todd Brown Jan 2012

Constitutional Gaps In Bankruptcy, S. Todd Brown

Journal Articles

Federal bankruptcy law incorporates a broad range of commercial and related matters that are otherwise left to the States under the Constitution, follows an efficiency-centered process model that may implicate due process, and relies upon a judicial structure that appears to be inconsistent with Article III. In spite of the crushing volume of bankruptcy cases and proceedings each year in which the resolution of one or more of these questions may be relevant, the Supreme Court has had few opportunities to tackle them directly. Indeed, after more than two centuries, the Court has provided precious few insights into the limits …

Race And Representation In Friday Night Lights, Keisha. Johnson Jan 2012

Race And Representation In Friday Night Lights, Keisha. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis will highlight the significance and representation of race in the film and television show Friday Night Lights. The core claim of my thesis will show that representation of race was different in the film as compared to the television show due to their various settings, one historical (1980s) and the other contemporary (2000s). While both the film and the television show were produced in the 2000s, their use of two different historical periods allows for contrasting representations of race even they both draw from the book Friday Night Lights. The film's representation of race is reflective of its …
