Truths We Must Tell Ourselves To Manage Climate Change, Robert H. Socolow Nov 2012

Truths We Must Tell Ourselves To Manage Climate Change, Robert H. Socolow

Vanderbilt Law Review

In 1958, Charles David Keeling began measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide (C02) in the atmosphere, at a site 11,000 feet above sea level near the top of Mauna Loa on the "big island" of Hawaii. The time series of monthly averages, the "Keeling Curve," is the iconic figure of climate change (see Figure 1). The curve oscillates and rises. The annual oscillations (whose details are seen in the Figure's inset) are the consequences of the seasonal breathing of the northern-hemisphere forests, which remove C02 from the atmosphere during their growing season and return C02 to the atmosphere as their …

Can We Regulate Our Way To Energy Efficiency? Product Standards As Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs Nov 2012

Can We Regulate Our Way To Energy Efficiency? Product Standards As Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs

Vanderbilt Law Review

Alternative energy supplies get most of the attention in the climate change debate, but reducing energy demand should be the dominant strategy for cutting global greenhouse gas emissions. Dozens of technical studies have concluded that improving the efficiency of automobiles, furnaces, motors, consumer electronics, lighting, air conditioners, and other energy-using products is the cheapest and fastest way to achieve dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.' In fact, avoiding catastrophic global heating largely depends on how fast energy efficient technology can be deployed over the next few decades.

Energy efficiency can be promoted through multiple policies, such as energy taxes, a …

Leaf-Level Gas Exchange And Foliar Chemistry Of Common Old-Field Species Responding To Warming And Precipitation Treatments., Vikki L. Rodgers, Susanne S. Hoeppner, Michael J. Daley, Jeffrey S. Dukes

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

We investigated the shifts in plant carbon (C) and water dynamics by measuring rates of photosynthesis, transpiration, and instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) in three common species of “old-field” plants—two C3 forb species (Plantago lanceolata and Taraxacum officinale) and one C3 grass species (Elymus repens)—under 12 experimentally altered temperature and precipitation regimes at the Boston Area Climate Experiment (BACE) in Waltham, Massachusetts. We also measured shifts in foliar C and nitrogen (N) content to determine possible changes in plant C/nutrient balance. We hypothesized that the warming treatment would cause an increase in photosynthesis rates, …

Criminal Law Reform And Thepersistence Of Strict Liability, Darryl K. Brown Nov 2012

Criminal Law Reform And Thepersistence Of Strict Liability, Darryl K. Brown

Duke Law Journal

Two reform movements transformed American criminal law in the quarter century that began in the late 1960s. Their origins and effects were starkly different, and their conflict meant that, on core choices about the basis for criminal liability, one movement had to win and the other had to lose. The first movement was the wave of criminal code reform inspired by the American Law Institute's Model Penal Code (MPC), first published in 1962. The MPC movement sought to increase the role of culpability as a prerequisite for liability by presumptively requiring proof of mens rea for every element of criminal …

Should Moving In Mean Losing Out? Making A Case To Clarify The Legal Effect Of Cohabitation On Alimony, Emily M. May Nov 2012

Should Moving In Mean Losing Out? Making A Case To Clarify The Legal Effect Of Cohabitation On Alimony, Emily M. May

Duke Law Journal

As nonmarital cohabitation has skyrocketed over the last several decades, courts and legislatures have increasingly struggled to decide what legal effect an ex-spouse's cohabitation with a new partner should have on the receipt of alimony payments. In seeking to answer this cohabitation question, states have taken a variety of approaches. Often, however, courts' answers to the cohabitation question are not grounded in the rationale that those courts used to award alimony in the first place and may therefore lead to inconsistent or absurd results. This Note addresses the cohabitation question and argues that states should revisit their current approaches in …

Automatic Generation Of Provably Correct Embedded Systems, Shang-Wei Lin, Yang Liu, Pao-Ann Hsiung, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Nov 2012

Automatic Generation Of Provably Correct Embedded Systems, Shang-Wei Lin, Yang Liu, Pao-Ann Hsiung, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the demand for new and complicated features, embedded systems are becoming more and more difficult to design and verify. Even if the design of a system is verified, how to guarantee the consistency between the design and its implementation remains a big issue. As a solution, we propose a framework that can help a system designer to model his or her embedded system using a high-level modeling language, verify the design of the system, and automatically generate executable software codes whose behavior semantics are consistent with that of the high-level model. We use two case studies to demonstrate the …

More Anti-Chain Based Refinement Checking, Ting Wang, Songzheng Song, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang, Shanping Li Nov 2012

More Anti-Chain Based Refinement Checking, Ting Wang, Songzheng Song, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Refinement checking plays an important role in system verification. It establishes properties of an implementation by showing a refinement relationship between the implementation and a specification. Recently, it has been shown that anti-chain based approaches increase the efficiency of trace refinement checking significantly. In this work, we study the problem of adopting anti-chain for stable failures refinement checking, failures-divergence refinement checking and probabilistic refine checking (i.e., a probabilistic implementation against a non-probabilistic specification). We show that the first two problems can be significantly improved, because the state space of the product model may be reduced dramatically. Though applying anti-chain for …

A Generalized Cluster Centroid Based Classifier For Text Categorization, Guansong Pang, Shengyi Jiang Nov 2012

A Generalized Cluster Centroid Based Classifier For Text Categorization, Guansong Pang, Shengyi Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, a Generalized Cluster Centroid based Classifier (GCCC) and its variants for text categorization are proposed by utilizing a clustering algorithm to integrate two wellknown classifiers, i.e., the K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) classifier and the Rocchio classifier. KNN, a lazy learning method, suffers from inefficiency in online categorization while achieving remarkable effectiveness. Rocchio, which has efficient categorization performance, fails to obtain an expressive categorization model due to its inherent linear separability assumption. Our proposed method mainly focuses on two points: one point is that we use a clustering algorithm to strengthen the expressiveness of the Rocchio model; another one is …
