An Analytical And Experimental Comparison Of Csp Extensions And Tools, Ling Shi, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Gustavo Carvalho Nov 2012

An Analytical And Experimental Comparison Of Csp Extensions And Tools, Ling Shi, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Gustavo Carvalho

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) has been widely applied to modeling and analyzing concurrent systems. There have been considerable efforts on enhancing CSP by taking data and other system aspects into account. For instance, CSP M combines CSP with a functional programming language whereas CSP# integrates high-level CSP-like process operators with low-level procedure code. Little work has been done to systematically compare these CSP extensions, which may have subtle and substantial differences. In this paper, we compare CSP M and CSP# not only on their syntax, but also operational semantics as well as their supporting tools such as FDR, ProB, and …

Poster Abstract: Towards Crowd-Aware Sensing Platform For Metropolitan Environments, Saumay Pushp, Chulhong Min, Youngki Lee, Chi Harold Liu, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose an in-situ Crowd-aware Sensing Platform, called "CrowdMon", which envisions the cooperation among mobile users in highly crowded urban areas such as metro and square. CrowdMon establishes a spontaneous connection from co-located users in a semantic proximity and enables them to share contextual information such as location, ambient music, and mood of places. To the best of our knowledge, CrowdMon is the first attempt to support crowd-aware services at a platform level. We show interesting use cases of CrowdMon and an initial system design to realize the crowd-based context sharing.

Mining Coherent Anomaly Collections On Web Data, Hanbo Dai, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang Nov 2012

Mining Coherent Anomaly Collections On Web Data, Hanbo Dai, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recent boom of weblogs and social media has attached increasing importance to the identification of suspicious users with unusual behavior, such as spammers or fraudulent reviewers. A typical spamming strategy is to employ multiple dummy accounts to collectively promote a target, be it a URL or a product. Consequently, these suspicious accounts exhibit certain coherent anomalous behavior identifiable as a collection. In this paper, we propose the concept of Coherent Anomaly Collection (CAC) to capture this kind of collections, and put forward an efficient algorithm to simultaneously find the top-K disjoint CACs together with their anomalous behavior patterns. Compared …

Nebraska Public School Administrators’ Perceptions Of Preschool Education, Jacqueline M. Florendo

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research study was to examine Nebraska public school administrators’ perceptions about Pre-K and its impact on student achievement for at-risk children. The research study provided information on factors that influence school administrators’ decisions to provide Pre-K programs. Demographic data was gathered from each participant so common group data, such as rural and non-rural disaggregated data, could be used to better analyze results and identify restrictions to implementation of Pre-K programs in schools and school districts.

An explanatory, sequential, mixed methods study was conducted during the spring and summer of 2012. The study initially gathered data using …

Impact Of Multimedia In Sina Weibo: Popularity And Life Span, Xun Zhao, Feida Zhu, Weining Qian, Aoying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimedia contents such as images and videos are widely used in social network sites nowadays. Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging service, is one of the first microblog platforms to incorporate multimedia content sharing features. This work provides statistical analysis on how multimedia contents are produced, consumed, and propagated in Sina Weibo. Based on 230 million tweets and 1.8 million user profiles in Sina Weibo, we study the impact of multimedia contents on the popularity of both users and tweets as well as tweet life span. Our preliminary study shows that multimedia tweets dominant pure text ones in SinaWeibo. Multimedia contents …

Native and naturalized bioactive plants of the Canadian and American temperate biome are examined for their health and performance enhancement properties. Some of these plants are now being used as natural health products, and many have a long history as traditional foods and/or medicines with indigenous groups. This paper reviews the medicinal/cultural uses and bioactive properties of selected plant families: the Holly family (Aquifoliaceae) as stimulants, the Celery family (Apiaceae) as normoglycemic aids and analgesics, the Ginseng family (Araliaceae) as energy- boosting aids, the Sunflower family (Compositae) as anti-inflammatory aids, and the Legume family (Fabaceae) and Nightshade family (Solanaceae) as …

Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren Nov 2012

Writing A Pedagogy Of Whiteness: A Relational Ethic Of Teaching, Chris Mcrae, John T. Warren

Communication Faculty Publications

Our experiences teaching about whiteness in communication classrooms have resulted in a wide spectrum of responses from students. We are troubled in particular by the overly resistant and compliant student responses to this subject, as we desire to engage with our students in a critically nuanced and potentially transformative dialogue about race and racism. This essay builds from our experiences in the classroom and works to articulate the dilemmas we often face as we teach about whiteness in our courses. These dilemmas mirror similar concerns we face in our own scholarly practices of reflexivity. By troubling our reflexive practices, as …

International Partnerships: A Model For Educational Organizations, Wesley Hickey, Janice A. Achtem, Joyce Nuner Nov 2012

International Partnerships: A Model For Educational Organizations, Wesley Hickey, Janice A. Achtem, Joyce Nuner

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Opportunities exist for faculty and students within educational leadership preparation programs to participate in international initiatives within developing countries. One way to do this is through collaboration with organizations that already have an established presence in the country. Working within these organizations provides opportunities for learning and research for the educational leadership program. If done well, such work also helps host organizations meet their mission and goals. An understanding of effective behaviors in international partnerships may benefit educational leadership programs that develop these types of service opportunities. The behaviors mirror the scholar-practitioner philosophy, of which some prominent educational leadership programs …

Vocabulary And Syntactic Knowledge Factors In 5th Grade Students' Reading Comprehension, Kouider Mokhtari, Dale S. Niederhauser Nov 2012

Vocabulary And Syntactic Knowledge Factors In 5th Grade Students' Reading Comprehension, Kouider Mokhtari, Dale S. Niederhauser

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, we examined 5th grade students’ levels of vocabulary knowledge and syntactic awareness relative to their reading comprehension performance. The aim was to explore the contributions of vocabulary and syntactic awareness as potential sources of reading comprehension difficulty for these readers. Overall, we found that both vocabulary knowledge and syntactic awareness contributed in significant yet unique ways to students’ reading comprehension performance. Students who showed weaknesses in vocabulary and syntax also performed poorly on measures of reading comprehension. Additionally, we found that syntactic awareness explained a small amount of additional variance in reading comprehension beyond what was explained …

What Studios Do, Eliot Bates Nov 2012

What Studios Do, Eliot Bates

Publications and Research

This essay is focused around a seemingly simple question – what do recording studios do? First, a clarification. I am not primarily asking “what are studios” or “what do people do in studios,” two comparatively straightforward questions that are tangentially addressed in academic and trade writing. Rather, I wish to consider some of the ways in which the studio itself shapes the kinds of social and musical performances and interactions that transpire within. I contend that studios must be understood simultaneously as acoustic environments, as meeting places, as container technologies, as a system of constraints on vision, sound and mobility, …

The Role Perceptions Of Deos In Pakistan : Toothless Tigers Or Selfless Servants?, Jan-E-Alam Khaki, Zubeda Bana, Mir Afzal Tajik, Qamar Safdar

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The study of educational leadership and management in Pakistan is relatively a new territory – a road less travelled. This is truer when it comes to the study of District Education Officials’ (DEOs) ways of managing education. These officials actually bridge the government higher functionaries and policies in terms of policy implementation, monitoring and supervision of the schools in their respective districts. These officials theoretically should exercise significant control over the functioning of schools in their jurisdiction. Though on paper they have heavy responsibilities but actually they have limited arena to exercise; their power due largely to complex web of …
