Turkish Journal of Biology

Alocasia macrorrhizos (L.) (Araceae), a coarse and erect plant that is widely cultivated to be eaten as a vegetable throughout Bangladesh, has been reported to possess a number of medicinal properties. The antihyperglycemic, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects of the methanol extract of A. macrorrhizos rhizomes were investigated. The extract was given at a single dose (250 and 500 mg/kg) in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice. The extract at 500 mg/kg produced a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the blood glucose level (55.49%) at 8 h of treatment when compared with the control and was comparable with the reference drug, metformin. The extract was also subjected to antioxidant potentiality and brine shrimp lethality bioassays. The IC_{50} value of the extract was 693.0 \mug/mL and the LC_{50} was 188.14 \mug/mL.

Effect Of Cell-Conditioned Media On Biomass Production Of Leishmania Parasites, Melahat Bagirova, Rabi̇a Çakir Koç, Adi̇l Allahverdi̇yev, Meli̇ke Ersöz Jan 2012

Effect Of Cell-Conditioned Media On Biomass Production Of Leishmania Parasites, Melahat Bagirova, Rabi̇a Çakir Koç, Adi̇l Allahverdi̇yev, Meli̇ke Ersöz

Turkish Journal of Biology

A large amount of parasite biomass production necessitates a higher volume of culture media, and this further increases the overall cost. For this reason, novel and alternative culture supplementary materials have been continuously investigated. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the effect of cell-conditioned media, collected as waste material during routine cell culture, on the growth and development of Leishmania parasites in vitro. In this study, for the first time, we show that cell-conditioned medium obtained from MCF-7 culture increased the growth of Leishmania parasites in vitro. These results show that the metabolites that are present in …

Twenty-seven aqueous extracts obtained from 21 plants used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections as folk remedies in Turkey were investigated for their relative total phenolic contents and antioxidant, antibacterial, antimycobacterial, and antifungal activities. Antibacterial and antifungal activities against dermatophytes and yeast-like fungi were determined using the microdilution method. Antibacterial activity of all extracts was more pronounced against gram-positive bacteria than against gram-negative bacteria. These extracts also exhibited higher antifungal activity against Candida krusei than ketaconazole. Six extracts displayed antidermatophytic activity against Epidermophyton floccosum, while only 3 extracts were highly active against Trichophyton rubrum. The extracts showed strong activity …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Shrinkage, Creep, And Abrasion On Self-Consolidating Concrete And High Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Use In Transportation Related Infrastructure, Brian Timothy Tucker Jan 2012

Investigation Of The Effects Of Shrinkage, Creep, And Abrasion On Self-Consolidating Concrete And High Volume Fly Ash Concrete For Use In Transportation Related Infrastructure, Brian Timothy Tucker

Masters Theses

"Concrete specimens were fabricated for shrinkage, creep, and abrasion resistance testing. Variations of self-consolidating concrete (SCC), high volume fly ash concrete (HVFA), and conventional concrete were studied. The results were compared to previous similar testing programs and used to determine the adequacy of the materials for use in practice. These two concrete variations offer significant benefits when used as replacements to conventional concrete. Because of the respective properties of both types of concrete, both economic and environmental benefits are achieved with the use of both. The lower labor costs of SCC and the lower material cost of HVFA lead to …

Statistical And Predictive Modeling Of Automated Meter Reading System Outages, Prasad Prabhakar Shinde Jan 2012

Statistical And Predictive Modeling Of Automated Meter Reading System Outages, Prasad Prabhakar Shinde

Masters Theses

"An Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system is a metering technology that enables power utility companies to receive customers' energy usage data centrally over a communication network. The installed automated meters also provide a daily log of outage events for each customer. A utility company can greatly benefit by using this information for outage management and to improve reliability. However, outage data is frequently corrupted and the outage flags registered by the customers' meters do not necessarily reflect true outages. This thesis focuses on developing methods to analyze outage data and building a model to identify good data versus spurious indications. …

Sapphire Fiber Numerical Aperture Measurement And Sensor Fabrication, Xia Fang Jan 2012

Sapphire Fiber Numerical Aperture Measurement And Sensor Fabrication, Xia Fang

Masters Theses

"A sapphire fiber is made of single crystal aluminum oxide with hexagonal crystal structure. It is attractive for high temperature application for its chemical resistance and high melting point of 2053⁰C. It is good for infrared transmission with a small attenuation of 0.13dB per meter at the wavelength of 2.94µm, and it can also deliver very high optical energy. However, a typical sapphire fiber has a rough surface and a nonperfect crystalline structure. Also, a sapphire fiber cannot be grown in a core-clad structure. The un-cladded waveguide imposes a number of undesirable characteristics on sensing applications, e.g., unpredictable light loss …

Evaluation Of The Reagan And Lamotte Sandstones In Southwestern Missouri For Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Todd Jeffrey Miller Jan 2012

Evaluation Of The Reagan And Lamotte Sandstones In Southwestern Missouri For Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Todd Jeffrey Miller

Masters Theses

"Carbon dioxide sequestration has been proposed as a way to reduce anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Several characteristics are required in order for a geologic formation to be suitable for sequestration. There must be an impermeable confining layer to restrain CO₂ migration toward the surface, the porosity and permeability must be high enough to allow for long term injection and substantial storage capacity, and the formation must be strong enough for long term injection to occur without inducing fractures. In this work, The Reagan and Lamotte Sandstones near Springfield, Missouri were evaluated for the potential for carbon dioxide sequestration. The Derby-Doe …

The Importance Of The Political In Immigration Federalism, Pratheepan Gulasekaram, S. Karthick Ramakrishnan Jan 2012

The Importance Of The Political In Immigration Federalism, Pratheepan Gulasekaram, S. Karthick Ramakrishnan

Publications

This Article provides a systematic, empirical investigation of the genesis of state and local immigration regulations, discrediting the popular notion that they are caused by uneven demographic pressures across the country. It also proffers a novel theory to explain the proliferation of these policies and queries the implications of this new model for federalism analysis. The story we tell in this paper is both political and legal; understanding immigration politics uncovers vital truths about the recent rise of subnational involvement in a policy arena that courts and commentators have traditionally ascribed to the federal government. Thus, this article connects the …

"The Life Of The Flesh Is In The Blood": State Storage And Usage Of Baby's Blood Sample, Jaclyn S. D'Arminio

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note highlights the ethical, legal, and policy challenges surrounding Newborn Screening (NBS) programs, particularly the storage and use of newborn bloodspots. It argues that while these programs provide crucial health benefits, the lack of informed consent regarding the retention and use of bloodspots raises significant privacy concerns. The central argument is that balancing public health benefits with individual privacy rights requires robust informed consent frameworks to maintain trust and ensure scientific progress.

New York Convention And The American Federal System, The Symposium, Christopher R. Drahozal Jan 2012

New York Convention And The American Federal System, The Symposium, Christopher R. Drahozal

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Whether state law can play a broader role in international arbitration matters in the United States depends on the extent to which the New York Convention and Chapter Two of the FAA (which implements the Convention) preempt state arbitration law. This article undertakes a preliminary analysis of that broad topic by examining several legal questions central to determining the preemptive effect of the New York Convention: (1) What effect, if any, does the federal-state clause (Article XI) have on U.S. obligations under the Convention? (2) To what extent does Chapter Two of the FAA apply in state court? and (3) …
