Evaluation Of A Protocol To Diagnose Chronic Kidney Disease Using The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiatives (Kdoqi) Guideline: Evaluation, Classification, And Stratification (Ecs)., Sandra L. Cotton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health problem in West Virginia. Primary care of CKD is suboptimal. Clinical practice guideline (CPG) usage could improve care, but CPG adoption is difficult. The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiatives (KDOQI) outlines CKD prevention and management. The primary goal of this project was to evaluate methods to increase KDOQI CPG adoption to enhance CKD diagnosis and staging in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), the leading cause of kidney disease. Secondary goals included increasing provider knowledge and project satisfaction. Using a quasi-experimental, one group pretest/posttest design, the KDOQI CPG, an overview of CKD care, …

Examining Portfolio-Based Assessment In An Upper-Level Biology Course, Brittany Ziegler Jan 2012

Examining Portfolio-Based Assessment In An Upper-Level Biology Course, Brittany Ziegler

Education STEM

Historically, students have been viewed as empty vessels and passive participants in the learning process but students actually are active forming their own conceptions. One way student learning is impacted is through assessment. Alternative assessment, which contrasts traditional assessment methods, takes into account how students learn by promoting engagement and construction of knowledge. This dissertation explores portfolio-based assessment, a method of alternative assessment, which requires students to compose a purposeful collection of work demonstrating their knowledge in an upper-level biology course. The research objectives include characterizing and contributing to the understanding of portfolio-based assessment in higher education, examining reflection and …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956), a native of West Virginia and graduate of West Virginia University, was an early practitioner of Modern art in America. Lazzell was employed by the government-sponsored Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) in 1934 in Morgantown, West Virginia. During her time with the program, Lazzell completed three wood-block prints and painted Justice, a mural for the Monongalia County Courthouse. This thesis examines Lazzell’s courthouse mural and discusses Lazzell’s selection of three themes, education, religion, and industry, and why they are significant to the Morgantown area. This thesis demonstrates that although the PWAP stipulated that there was to …

Judicial Ideal Points In New Democracies: The Case Of Taiwan, Lucia Dalla Pellegrina, Nuno Garoupa, Shirley Ching-Ping Lin Jan 2012

Judicial Ideal Points In New Democracies: The Case Of Taiwan, Lucia Dalla Pellegrina, Nuno Garoupa, Shirley Ching-Ping Lin

Faculty Scholarship

This paper extends the empirical analysis of the determinants of judicial behavior by estimating the ideal points for the Justices of the Taiwanese Constitutional Court from 1988-2009. Taiwan presents a particularly interesting case because the establishment and development of constitutional review corresponds to the country 's political transition from an authoritarian regime to an emerging democracy. The estimated ideal points allow us to focus on political coalitions in the Judicial Yuan based on presidential appointments. We did not find any strong evidence of such coalitions. Our empirical results indicated that, with the exception of a handful of Justices, most of …

Stare Decisis And Certiroari Arrive To Brazil: A Comparative Law And Economics Approach, Maria Angela Jardim De Santa Cruz Oliveira, Nuno Garoupa Jan 2012

Stare Decisis And Certiroari Arrive To Brazil: A Comparative Law And Economics Approach, Maria Angela Jardim De Santa Cruz Oliveira, Nuno Garoupa

Faculty Scholarship

Two important legal reforms in court procedure have taken place in Brazil recently: simula vinculante (all courts now have to follow the reasoning of the Supreme Court in similar cases) and requisito da repercussao geral (the Supreme Court only hears cases that are of general importance). These two procedural rules respond to a long debate in the Brazilian legal community on how to address court congestion, the heavy workload of the Brazilian Supreme Court, and the role of the higher courts in establishing case law. We discuss the implications of these two important reforms from the comparative perspective (by explaining …

Essays On Trade And Foreign Direct Investment Costs And Migration, Eugene Bempong Nyantakyi Jan 2012

Essays On Trade And Foreign Direct Investment Costs And Migration, Eugene Bempong Nyantakyi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation consists of three essays on trade and investment costs and migration. The first paper documents how timeliness induces U.S. parent firms to adjust their trade activities with affiliates located abroad, and the extent to which these adjustments change according to the time sensitivity of the industry in which the multinational enterprise (MNE) operates. The results show that parent firms operating in manufacturing are sensitive to shipping time. Long shipping lags reduce parent firms' import from (export to) affiliates. At the sectoral level, there exists some heterogeneity in MNE's response to time. When MNEs are ranked on a spectrum …

Foreign Christian Influence In Developing World Domestic Social Policy, William Harrison Jan 2012

Foreign Christian Influence In Developing World Domestic Social Policy, William Harrison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is a debate going on in the United States today about where our culture is headed. In the United States and much of the West, society is becoming more liberal on issues such as gay rights and abortion. In countries of the developing in Africa and Latin America there has also been a debate about these issues. This is in part fueled by Christian groups coming from outside of the countries of the developing world who are attempting to export the Culture Wars of the West to the developing world. This paper theorizes that foreign Christian groups have a …

In Search Of A Dream America: Place-Connectedness In East European Immigrant Life Writing, Irina V. Rodimtseva Jan 2012

In Search Of A Dream America: Place-Connectedness In East European Immigrant Life Writing, Irina V. Rodimtseva

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Theorists of place acknowledge human need for attachment to place, but this bond is often stated as a given, without an explication of its origin or attributes. Implementing the concept of place-connectedness formulated by Lawrence Buell, I analyze the process of bonding with new places described in immigrant life writing, focusing on twentieth-century texts by authors from Russia, the Soviet Union, and Communist bloc countries. Examining the sources through which American imagery was available to East Europeans during the 1900s, I confirm a link between the concepts of the American Dream and of place-connectedness and contend that for immigrants, establishing …

Silent Spring At 50, Roger Meiners, Pierre Desrochers, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

This introduction from the book Silent Spring at 50 describes the various contributors’ insights into Rachel Carson’s landmark work. The authors come from a variety of disciplines, including conservation biology, English, law, and economics, and offer critical assessments of Silent Spring and its legacy. The first part has three chapters that put the book into the context of its time, examining it in light of Carson’s previous books on the sea (Wallace Kaufman); the larger tradition of authors warning against human hubris in environmental matters (Pierre Desrochers & Hiroko Shimizu); and the contest between “environmental religion” and “economic religion” that …

Developing A Dna Fingerprint For Midwest Six-Rowed Malting Barley, Magan Friskop Lewis Jan 2012

Developing A Dna Fingerprint For Midwest Six-Rowed Malting Barley, Magan Friskop Lewis

Plant Sciences

The requirements for brewing beer from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) malt are specific and unique for each brewer. Anheuser-Busch InBev and Miller Coors Brewing Company (MillerCoors) are two major brewers in the United States that target different malt quality profiles for six-rowed barley malt. Two closely related cultivars developed by the University of Minnesota, Robust and Stander, differ greatly in agronomic and malt quality performance. Robust malt fits the requirements of MillerCoors and Stander malt has many of the parameters desired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. The close relationship between these two cultivars increases the chance of recognizing chromosome regions with the …

Developing A Discipleship Ministry For Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In The West Central Korean Conference, Jae Sun Kim Jan 2012

Developing A Discipleship Ministry For Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In The West Central Korean Conference, Jae Sun Kim

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Purpose. The purpose of this Ministry Focus Project document was to develop a theoretical and practical framework for implementing a discipleship ministry in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the West Central Korean Conference in South Korea and ultimately to cultivate a consciousness of discipleship among Adventists. The worldwide Seventh-day Adventist denomination is growing, but it seems that Adventist churches are failing in the area of discipleship. Making disciples needs to be an important part of our Adventist culture. A discipleship curriculum would help the pastors and members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Korea to become mature, committed, reproducing witnesses …

A Collaborative Sermon Preparation Team At The Seventh-Day Adventist Community Church Of Vancouver, Wa, Roger Walter Jan 2012

A Collaborative Sermon Preparation Team At The Seventh-Day Adventist Community Church Of Vancouver, Wa, Roger Walter

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Research (Rainer, 2001) indicates that people come back to church because of the sermon. Additionally, it is argued (Anderson, 2006) that the church and culture have changed. People today have higher expectations of the quality of what happens. Therefore, the expectation is much higher for the quality of a sermon. Yet, the sermon development process is still traditionally a private and closed system involving the pastor alone. This underutilizes a resource of creative people who could assist the pastor with research, writing, creativity, reflection and evaluation of the manuscript and graphics.

Method. In this study I sought to lay …

Heteronormative Recovery In The Bell Jar, Gretchen Therese Junglas

English

In Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood struggles to form a true identity. She emulates many women as a way to see how various identities work for her. One of these identities is that of a lesbian. During the novel’s 1953 setting, lesbianism was not a socially acceptable lifestyle. Esther struggles with own internalized homophobia as well as the control of her doctors. She undergoes treatment during her hospitalization that is suggestive of sexual conversion therapy at the time, including the use of electricity as a tool of discipline. Doctors lead her toward an identity that is not …

Protology And Eschatology In The Writings Of John C. Polkinghorne: A Study Of Contrastive Roles Of Scripture, H. Nicholas De Lima Jan 2012

Protology And Eschatology In The Writings Of John C. Polkinghorne: A Study Of Contrastive Roles Of Scripture, H. Nicholas De Lima

Master's Theses

Problem The focus of this thesis is to address the problem of the contrastive roles of Scripture in protology and eschatology in the writings of John C. Polkinghorne. On the one hand, Polkinghorne rejects a univocal understanding of Gen 1-2, by invoking symbolic/analogical language for Gen 1-2, so that he can accept scientific protology. On the other hand, Polkinghorne introduces an apparent, relative univocity of biblical language in order to obtain his eschatology, contrary to the claims of pure scientific eschatology. This seems to suggest a dimension of internal methodological and theological incoherence in his system. Methodology This thesis provides …
