Javalite - An Operational Semantics For Modeling Java Programs, Saint Oming'o Wesonga Nov 2012

Javalite - An Operational Semantics For Modeling Java Programs, Saint Oming'o Wesonga

Theses and Dissertations

Java is currently a widely used programming language. However, there is no formal definition of Java's semantics. Consequently, Java code does not have a universal meaning. This work discusses recent attempts to formalize Java and presents a new formalism of Java called Javalite. In contrast to common approaches to formalization, Javalite is purely syntactic in its definition. Syntactic operational semantics use the structure of the language to define its behavior. Javalite models most Java features with notable exceptions being threads, reflection, and interfaces. This work presents an executable semi-formal model of Javalite in PLT Redex. Being executable means that Javalite …

The Boomerang Effect: Asia's Casino Industry Growth Can "Fly Back" To Benefit Las Vegas, Jonathan Galaviz Nov 2012

The Boomerang Effect: Asia's Casino Industry Growth Can "Fly Back" To Benefit Las Vegas, Jonathan Galaviz

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Boomerangs are an interesting invention. These remarkable devices can be thrown into the sky, for long distances, and then they do something amazing: they fly back to the thrower. Metaphorically speaking, the Las Vegas-based casino resort industry has thrown its "boomerang" to places like Singapore, Macau, and many other casino markets throughout the world over the last decade, with great success. Of course, many question whether this "boomerang" will indeed fly back to the thrower in the form of economic benefits. In this paper, I will lay out some key strategic concepts that argue that Las Vegas is indeed benefitting …

Administrative Mandamus As A Prerequisite To Inverse Condemnation: "Healing" California's Confused Takings Law , Sharon L. Browne

Pepperdine Law Review

This article addresses and reviews the distinctions in purpose and scope between actions for inverse condemnation and petitions for administrative writs, traces the blending of these two very different instruments by the California courts, and shows how this policy has subverted constitutional rights in California.

Migrant Hispanic Families Of Young Children: An Analysis Of Parent Needs And Family Support, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Vivian I. Correa, Cheryl L. Beverly Nov 2012

Migrant Hispanic Families Of Young Children: An Analysis Of Parent Needs And Family Support, Linda S. Behar-Horenstein, Vivian I. Correa, Cheryl L. Beverly

Education and Culture

The population served by early interventionists has changed to include more migrant families. Although there has been much research concerning Caucasian families, less is known about culturally and linguistically diverse families. Forming partnerships with families can be aided by understanding how to identify families' needs and support networks. The purpose of this study was to assess the group differences between Hispanic migrant families of young children with and without disabilities (ages birth - 5) regarding their perceptions of needs and use of support systems. The findings indicate that there is little difference between migrant families of young children with and …

Cultural Obstacles On The Road To Rural Educational Renewal, Paul Theobald, Ann Alsmeyer Nov 2012

Cultural Obstacles On The Road To Rural Educational Renewal, Paul Theobald, Ann Alsmeyer

Education and Culture

While many rural communities consider themselves a part of something other than an agriculturally-oriented economy, most are nevertheless deeply affected by agricultural policy and practice. Other long-standing rural occupa-tions, such as logging, mining, and fishing, share with agriculture the finite nature of the resource base involved. Historically, this circumstance led to the development of resource stewardship in rural communities and to the resulting evolution of cultural practices tending to sustain the extractive nature of these occupations. In this regard, all of these types of communities are similar. They are similar, too, in that during this century, all have witnessed the …

Reclaiming ‗The New Public Spaces‘ Outdoor Advertising & The Resistance Of The Albanian Consumer Movements, Ana Kekezi, Drita Kruja Nov 2012

Reclaiming ‗The New Public Spaces‘ Outdoor Advertising & The Resistance Of The Albanian Consumer Movements, Ana Kekezi, Drita Kruja

UBT International Conference

This study investigated and contributed empirically and theoretically the Albanian consumer resistance movements toward the invading of the public spaces by advertising. The outdoor advertising, even in emerging countries as Albania, is inescapable and has grabbed the consumer and his incapability on avoiding it. The methodological considerations that directed this research was the interpretive paradigm using within-methods triangulation. The impacts of free trade effects on consumer culture and proper spaces in developing countries has resulted as a significant one, through the process of commercial usurpation of public spaces. The study aimed to contribute in the theorical literature on the consumer …

Monetary Valuation Of Voluntary Contributions: The Case Of Lower Austria, Réka Heim, Andrea Hoeltl Nov 2012

Monetary Valuation Of Voluntary Contributions: The Case Of Lower Austria, Réka Heim, Andrea Hoeltl

UBT International Conference

The circumstances of voluntary engagement have largely remained unexamined due to the vague and challenging description of their content. Voluntary engagement tends to increase in European nations characterized by civil societies with material prosperity and high life satisfaction such as in Norway, Sweden and in Austria. This paper studies voluntary contributions in Lower Austria by tracking a cumulative data file from STATISTICS AUSTRIA in terms which purpose is twofold: first, in order to estimate the quantitative dimension of voluntary contributions, data from an additional section of the Austrian Micro Census is considered, and second employment and unemployment data from the …

Effects Of Regional Trade Agreements On International Agricultural Trade, Biljana Ciglovska, Jeton Shaqiri Nov 2012

Effects Of Regional Trade Agreements On International Agricultural Trade, Biljana Ciglovska, Jeton Shaqiri

UBT International Conference

Determining the effects of the trade liberalization is a complex problem of the modern theory of international trade. For that purpose we need to determine whether the maximum benefits from the trade for one country and the world in general, could be achieved when the foreign trade liberalization is implemented on non-discriminatory base (in terms of globalization) or when the foreign trade liberalization is implemented on discriminatory base id est., within the regional economic integration by introduction of safeguard measures towards third countries (regionalism). Regionalization supporters affirm that the regional agreements promote more liberal trade and through the application of …

Public Building Maintenance And Rehabilitation, Florian Nepravishta, Andrea Maliqari, Ariana Nepravishta

UBT International Conference

The public buildings such as high schools, kindergartens, nurseries, universities, dormitories and buildings in their service used by the general public are valuable assets, normally built with substantial investment in a long period of time. These assets are not always managed with the care that they require. As a result, depreciation and destruction in time reducing the ability of these buildings to fulfil their functions by reducing the time of use, durability. General usage costs will also be higher because of the buildings require costly renovations or replacements of materials frequently than might be necessary if they are maintained regularly. …

Longitudinal Functional Models With Structured Penalties, Madan G. Kundu, Jaroslaw Harezlak, Timothy W. Randolph Nov 2012

Longitudinal Functional Models With Structured Penalties, Madan G. Kundu, Jaroslaw Harezlak, Timothy W. Randolph

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Collection of functional data is becoming increasingly common including longitudinal observations in many studies. For example, we use magnetic resonance (MR) spectra collected over a period of time from late stage HIV patients. MR spectroscopy (MRS) produces a spectrum which is a mixture of metabolite spectra, instrument noise and baseline profile. Analysis of such data typically proceeds in two separate steps: feature extraction and regression modeling. In contrast, a recently-proposed approach, called partially empirical eigenvectors for regression (PEER) (Randolph, Harezlak and Feng, 2012), for functional linear models incorporates a priori knowledge via a scientifically-informed penalty operator in the regression function …
