General Education In Health Science-Focused Institutions: An Explanatory Mixed Methods Study, Peggy K. Rosario Nov 2012

General Education In Health Science-Focused Institutions: An Explanatory Mixed Methods Study, Peggy K. Rosario

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to describe the structure of general education curricula at baccalaureate colleges of health science in relationship to Bergquist’s Career-Based Model of curriculum. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach, the model was tested by examining whether the curricula were both prescriptive and specific. First, the researcher analyzed how prescriptive the general education curricula at 38 colleges of health science were by evaluating the institutions’ catalogs and websites. In the qualitative phase, the researcher interviewed general education leaders at six of the colleges to confirm the quantitative data and obtain information about how specific the …

Turmoil And Power: A Thematic And Chronological Study Of Dynastic Transition In Late Period Egypt, Jared Brent Krebsbach Nov 2012

Turmoil And Power: A Thematic And Chronological Study Of Dynastic Transition In Late Period Egypt, Jared Brent Krebsbach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Egypt's Late Period (728-341 BC) was a time of frequent political transition where dynasts, many of them foreign, usurped the throne and established new dynasties through a number of different methods. This was a stark contrast to earlier periods in pharaonic Egypt where dynasties were usually long-lived and violent dynastic transition was the exception not the rule. The turbulent political situation in the Late Period affected many different facets of life in Egypt so a complete examination of the historical processes that were taking place at the time will help current scholarship illuminate more about this often enigmatic period. This …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

We have previously reported that MUC4 expression is a poor prognostic factor in various carcinomas. Our previous study also showed that MUC1 expression in gastric cancers, including the early and advanced stages is a poor prognostic factor. In the present study, the expression profiles of MUC4 and MUC1 were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using two anti-MUC4 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), 8G7 and 1G8, and anti-MUC1 MAb DF3 in 104 gastrectomy specimens of early gastric adenocarcinoma with submucosal invasion (pT1b2), including 197 histological subtype lesions. Before the IHC study of the human specimens, we evaluated the specificity of the two MAbs by …

Effects Of Heterogeneity In Small Π-Type Dimers: Homogeneous And Mixed Dimers Of Diacetylene And Cyanogen, Kari L. Copeland, Gregory S. Tschumper Nov 2012

Effects Of Heterogeneity In Small Π-Type Dimers: Homogeneous And Mixed Dimers Of Diacetylene And Cyanogen, Kari L. Copeland, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The homo- and heterogeneous dimers of diacetylene (H-C≡C-C≡C-H) and cyanogen (N≡C-C≡N) were studied using ab initio electronic structure computations to probe the effects of heterogeneity on noncovalent interactions between systems with delocalized π electron networks. Full geometry optimizations and harmonic vibrational frequencies were performed using the robust coupled-cluster with single and double and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) method with the triple-ζ plus 2 sets of polarization functions TZ2P(f,d)++ basis set. Seven basic configurations were examined for each dimer (cross, stacked, parallel-slipped, parallel-tipped, linear, T-shaped and Y-shaped), but only four stationary points were identified on the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of …

Reverberations: Beat Of The Heart, Sarah Zoller Nov 2012

Reverberations: Beat Of The Heart, Sarah Zoller

Theses and Dissertations

Working mainly from my own photographs, I paint friends in the local music scene. Their beauty, expressions, and unique personalities are the focus of my stylized portraits. I attempt to accurately record my subjects by using non-naturalistic colors in a small range of values. These images contain both abstract and figurative elements, and reveal a combination of far away and close-up views. Each painting is designed to capture a single fleeting moment. I provide precious glances into the lives of those people who help mold and nurture Washington, D.C.’s music community. In addition to my paintings, I use the ancient …

Defending The Heart Of Aztlan, Javier Benavidez Nov 2012

Defending The Heart Of Aztlan, Javier Benavidez

Student Publications

Located just south of Downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, the historic community of Barelas is a revered place of culture, tradition, and identity, described as a one-of-a-kind Heart of Aztlan, by authors like Rodolfo Anaya. Throughout its history, the neighborhood has undergone significant periods of development, investment, disinvestment, distress, revitalization, strengthening and uncertainty. Though one of Albuquerques poorest neighborhoods in average income, Baraleños love the neighborhood's many long-time families, vibrant cultural festivities like the Christmas Posadas, and places of the heart. Those places include the Barelas Community Center with its murals, the Barelas Senior Center and its weekly dances, 4th Street …

A Place By The Water: An Analysis Of The Historic Atrisco Plaza Community & Strategies For Maintaining Sense Of Place, James M. Aranda Nov 2012

A Place By The Water: An Analysis Of The Historic Atrisco Plaza Community & Strategies For Maintaining Sense Of Place, James M. Aranda

Student Publications

For my professional project, I will document the historic settlement patterns of the historic Atrisco Plaza community, catalogue and analyze existing settlement patterns and community characteristics and develop practical planning and urban design strategies to assist planners, developers, policy makers, and community members in maintaining Atriscos sense of place and cultural landscape. My long-term vision for the Atrisco area is to develop and implement a community-oriented design regimen that strengthens this historical community's unique sense of place, and create opportunities for public and private investment in this long neglected 'place by the water.' Through the use of historic and contemporary …
