Collective Bargaining In Canada, Michael Farrell Nov 2012

Collective Bargaining In Canada, Michael Farrell

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

In Canada collective bargaining is shaped by a tight statutory structure used to regulate almost every aspect

of of the union-manangement relationship. Such legislation closely regulates the formation of the collective

bargaining relationship, governs the conduct and timing of the bargaining process, places restrictions on economic

conflict, and may, in some cases, mandate certain terms of the collective agreement. The legislation confers broad

administrative powers on labour relations boards or tribunals, which play a major role in the application of the

legislation (Carter 1995). Labour tribunals regulate both management and union activity and may restrain some

forms of employer interference …

New Models For A "Flat" World, James Lyons Nov 2012

New Models For A "Flat" World, James Lyons

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The theories about our time, the next decade, and “the future” are many. Most of them have some

relevance to what we collectively need to do to insure our own future and that of the nation. I’m sure all of

you are aware of Thomas Friedman’s book The World is Flat, but in case you haven’t had the opportunity

to read it, Friedman’s thesis is that the quantum leaps in technology in the recent past have led us into an

age in which we and our institutions and students are in a competition with others all around the world. He …

New Paradigms For Instruction: Impact On Collective Bargaining, Intellectual Property Rights, James Castagnera Nov 2012

New Paradigms For Instruction: Impact On Collective Bargaining, Intellectual Property Rights, James Castagnera

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

“The concept of intellectual property is almost dead thanks to the Internet” (Khanna, 2004). That grim statement can not be ignored. The Internet has changed our world enormously, opening new doors of communication and access to knowledge. Such privilege does not come without responsibility, as the degree to which it can be taken advantage of is enormous. The idea of intellectual property is to treat knowledge like private property, using copyrights, trademarks and patents to enforce the notion.

Developing Business Acumen In Chinese Business School Graduates, Rajaram Veliyath, Bonnie Stivers, Joe Hair, Teresa Joyce, Marko Sarstedt Nov 2012

Developing Business Acumen In Chinese Business School Graduates, Rajaram Veliyath, Bonnie Stivers, Joe Hair, Teresa Joyce, Marko Sarstedt

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

This study assessed the importance of knowledge, skills, abilities (i.e., KSAs) and competencies for managerial success in China’s market economy. Business students at a major Chinese university were surveyed over a five year period, initially in 2001 and later in 2006, five years after China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Using Partial Least Squares (PLS), the explained variances in business acumen and social motivation skills were higher after China’s WTO entry. The results were reversed for communication skills. The results confirmed the predictive relevance of entrepreneurial behavior and adaptability in the model. Overall, the results suggest an enhanced …

Have China & India Achieved Their Potential In Attracting Foreign Direct Investment?, Kaliappa Kalirajan, Raymond Prasad, Peter Drysdale

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Since the last two decades, China and India have attracted the attention of multinational enterprises around the world. Apart from accounting for almost a third of the world population, both economies’ share in the world economy has grown substantially. Taken together they are expected to contribute around 1.8 percent of the 4.5 percent global growth expected in 2011. Currently, China hails as the second largest economy in the world replacing Japan (in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms), while India is the fourth largest economy, replacing Germany (IMF, 2011). Furthermore, based on the current economic growth trajectory (in PPP terms), China …

Digital Stone Exhibition: The Intersection Of Art & Technology, Robert Michael Smith Nov 2012

Digital Stone Exhibition: The Intersection Of Art & Technology, Robert Michael Smith

Nor’easter Conference

"Digital Stone" as a concept is based on the fusion of CAD technologies with traditional stone carving.

Digital Stone Exhibition featured four digital sculptors: Bruce Beasley, Jon Isherwood, Robert Michael Smith and Kenneth Snelson, who designed five sculptures each utilizing CAD technologies. All sculptures in this exhibition were designed and developed first in virtual space of software programs. Physical models were printed by rapid prototype machines which became a metaphorical "hand" of the computer to produce an actual sculpture from the virtual sculpture. The RP models were sent to China to be enlarged in granite at Dingli Stone Carving Company …

Nursing ETDs

This descriptive study assessed stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services in a convenience sample (N = 211) of Air Force nursing personnel, including 111 officers, 98 enlisted, and 2 of unknown grade, to answer the following research questions: (1) What are the perceived levels of stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services for Air Force nursing personnel? and (2) Does military grade affect perceived levels of stigma and barriers to accessing mental health services for officer and enlisted Air Force nursing personnel? Research Brief: "Risk And Resilience In Military Families Experiencing Deployment: The Role Of The Family Attachment Network", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief details the military families attachment network model to demonstrate how family relationships are impacted during deployment and reintegration. The model shows that returning veterans face concerns with intimate relationships, which often result in poor communication, intimacy problems, domestic violence and other issues. The authors of this article address specific needs within attachment relationships among military families. These families would benefit from increased federal funding for research that examines adult attachment styles and parent-child attachment relationships in military families. Further research should also include the experiences of single parents who are deployed.

Learning Within A Computer-Assisted Instructional Environment: Effects On Multiplication Math Fact Mastery And Self-Efficacy In Elementary-Age Students, Loraine Jones Hanson Nov 2012

Learning Within A Computer-Assisted Instructional Environment: Effects On Multiplication Math Fact Mastery And Self-Efficacy In Elementary-Age Students, Loraine Jones Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of basic multiplication mastery (0-12) and self-efficacy outcomes for elementary age students attempting to master multiplication facts in a Computer-Assisted Instructional (CAI) environment. Timez Attack (TA), a modern Internet based 3-D multiplication video game, was the computer program used in this study. Four third- and four fourth-grade classes of students at a public charter school received either 12 20-minute Teacher-Led Instructional (TLI), or TA multiplication practice sessions. Pre- and post Math Attitude Survey (MAS), timed multiplication tests, observations, and informal interviews were used to assess and compare TA and …
