Transforming Education To Strengthen Health Systems In The Sultanate Of Oman, Gillian White Nov 2012

Transforming Education To Strengthen Health Systems In The Sultanate Of Oman, Gillian White

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Conspicuous gaps demonstrate a collective global failure in the world’s health systems as they struggle to manage complex and expensive demands. The Lancet Commission recently took a global interdisciplinary perspective and systematic approach to consider alliances between education for health professionals and health systems in order to address these problems. They concluded that positive outcomes require new instructional and institutional designs. Findings from the Lancet Commission have implications for the development of health professional education in Oman, particularly with regard to the call for integrative and transformative education for the next generation of health professionals. Education in the Omani health …

Lipoprotein(A) And Syntax Score Association With Severity Of Coronary Artery Atherosclerosis In North India, Fauzia Ashfaq, Pk Goel, Nagraja Sethi, Rishi, Mohammed I. Khan, Mohammed Z. Idris

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: This cross-sectional study investigated the association of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels as an atherosclerosis predictor and their relationship to the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: 360 consecutive patients at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and King George’s Medical University hospitals, Lucknow, North India, with chest pains, CAD symptoms and on lipid-lowering therapy were enrolled between June 2009 and October 2011. Before coronary artery angiography (CAG), a fasting blood sample was assessed for lipid and Lp(a) levels. The synergy between percutaneous coronary intervention with taxus and cardiac surgery (SYNTAX) score was calculated according to the CAG results. …

Comparative Difficulties With Non-Scientific General Vocabulary And Scientific/Medical Terminology In English As A Second Language (Esl) Medical Students, Thomas A. Heming, Shobha Nandagopal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Medical education requires student comprehension of both technical (scientific/medical) and non-technical (general) vocabulary. Our experience with “English as a second language” (ESL) Arab students suggested they often have problems comprehending scientific statements because of weaknesses in their understanding of non-scientific vocabulary. This study aimed to determine whether ESL students have difficulties with general vocabulary that could hinder their understanding of scientific/medical texts. Methods: A survey containing English text was given to ESL students in the premedical years of an English-medium medical school in an Arabic country. The survey consisted of sample questions from the Medical College Admission Test (USA). …

Spinal Neurofibroma Masquerading As A Herniated Disc : A Case Report, Tariq Lamki, Mario Ammirati Nov 2012

Spinal Neurofibroma Masquerading As A Herniated Disc : A Case Report, Tariq Lamki, Mario Ammirati

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

We present the only case in English medical literature of a spinal neurofibroma misdiagnosed as a herniated disc using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This case presented with typical symptoms and radiological findings of a herniated disc. Intraoperatively, an abnormality was noted at the S1 nerve root sleeve. Further exploration revealed a spinal neurofibroma which was completely resected, resulting in an improvement in the patient’s symptoms. Currently, there is heavy reliance on MRI as a highly sensitive and specific tool used in the diagnosis of herniated lumbar discs. Although there have been occasional reports of misdiagnoses using MRI, there are no …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper explores the values and usefulness of information dissemination as it affects food security in Nigeria, particularly in Katsina state. Information has been and would continue to play a vital role in any national development and growth. Agricultural information provision and dissemination is a must for every responsible government because it is only when farmer were informed, that they will be able to take a rational decision and produce enough to feed the state and the nation in general, consequently meeting the goal set by the MDG. Food security has been identified as the inability of a nation to …

‘Some Can’T Be That Simple’: Flannery O’Connor’S Debt To French Symbolism, Evan Howell Nov 2012

‘Some Can’T Be That Simple’: Flannery O’Connor’S Debt To French Symbolism, Evan Howell

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I trace the influence of French Symbolist poetry on the works of Flannery O’Connor. Many of O’Connor’s influences are well-known and documented, including Catholicism, the South, modern fiction, and her battle with lupus. However, I argue that Symbolism, via its influence on Modernist literature, is another major influence. In particular, I focus on several aspects of O’Connor’s writing: the recurrence of the same symbol across multiple works, the central location of symbols in several stories, the use of private symbols of the author’s invention, and use of symbol, rather than language, to convey transcendence. Aided by the …

The Relationship Of Researcher And Participant In Qualitative Inquiry: From “Self And Other” Binaries To The Poststructural Feminist Perspective Of Subjectivity, Kinga Varga-Dobai Nov 2012

The Relationship Of Researcher And Participant In Qualitative Inquiry: From “Self And Other” Binaries To The Poststructural Feminist Perspective Of Subjectivity, Kinga Varga-Dobai

The Qualitative Report

Whether approached from a positivist perspective or a more comprehensive postpositivist theoretical and philosophical grounding, the relationship between researcher and participant entails the strong binary opposition of the I-Thou (Buber, 1971) or Self and Other (Bhabha, 2004) within which I or Self is associated with the researcher and Thou or Other represents the research subject. The goal of this paper is to offer an overview of the various theoretical and ethodological approaches to the researcher-participant relationship in qualitative research. The author will first explore how traditional qualitative and emancipatory feminist research have addressed this issue, then she will investigate how …

Transcription And Analysis Of Qualitative Data In A Study Of Women Who Sexually Offended Against Children, Elizabeth Anne Mcnulty Nov 2012

Transcription And Analysis Of Qualitative Data In A Study Of Women Who Sexually Offended Against Children, Elizabeth Anne Mcnulty

The Qualitative Report

Research on sexual violence is often conducted within the qualitative paradigm. However, many writers have described the lack of specific detail provided with regard to decisions and processes involved in transcribing and analyzing this type of data. In this article, I will provide a description and discussion of the organization, categorization, and analysis of in-depth interviews in a recent study of women who sexually abused children. The study revealed common experiences of sexual and other abuse in the women’s childhood and adult relationships. These experiences created vulnerabilities that appeared to play a significant role in the women’s offenses. Although abused …

Reactive Rayleigh–Taylor Turbulent Mixing: A One-Dimensional-Turbulence Study, E.D. Gonzalez-Juez, A.R. Kerstein, D.O. Lignell Nov 2012

Reactive Rayleigh–Taylor Turbulent Mixing: A One-Dimensional-Turbulence Study, E.D. Gonzalez-Juez, A.R. Kerstein, D.O. Lignell

Faculty Publications

We study the problem of reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence in the Boussinesq framework using one-dimensional-turbulence (ODT) simulations. In this problem a reaction zone between overlying heavy/cold reactants and underlying light/hot products moves against gravity. First, we show that ODT results for global quantities in non-reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence are within those from direct numerical simulations (DNS). This comparison give us confidence in using ODT to study unexplored flow regimes in the reactive case. Then, we show how ODT predicts an early stage of reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence that behaves similarly to the non-reactive case, as observed in previous DNS. More importantly, ODT indicates …

Possession Of Child Pornography: Should You Be Convicted When The Computer Cache Does The Saving For You?, Giannina Marin Nov 2012

Possession Of Child Pornography: Should You Be Convicted When The Computer Cache Does The Saving For You?, Giannina Marin

Florida Law Review

This Note examines the concept of electronic possession in the field of child pornography, with the aim of reconciling the basic intuition behind possession with the reality of electronic data. Part II briefly discusses the case and statutory history that placed child pornography outside the bounds of the First Amendment and led to constitutionally valid prohibitions on the possession of child pornography. Part III sets forth the various ways in which individuals can access electronic child pornography, with a focus on the user’s level of interaction. Part IV discusses factors that the courts have considered in defining what constitutes possession …

Clicking Away Confidentiality: Workplace Waiver Of Attorney-Client Privilege, Adam C. Losey Nov 2012

Clicking Away Confidentiality: Workplace Waiver Of Attorney-Client Privilege, Adam C. Losey

Florida Law Review

In workplace waiver cases, a schism is quietly developing. Some courts are discreetly (and perhaps inadvertently) abandoning the traditionally accepted narrow interpretation of attorney-client privilege in favor of a broad protective approach on public policy grounds. Others continue to adhere to traditional doctrine. A clash between these two schools of thought may be inevitable. The universal application of a rebuttable presumption that an employee has waived attorney-client privilege could avert a direct collision between these two schools of thought and establish a semblance of predictability in workplace waiver cases.

Part II points out the growing and unspoken abandonment of traditional …

Student Speech Rights In The Digital Age, Mary-Rose Papandrea Nov 2012

Student Speech Rights In The Digital Age, Mary-Rose Papandrea

Florida Law Review

For several decades courts have struggled to determine when, if ever, public schools should have the power to restrict student expression that does not occur on school grounds during school hours. In the last several years, courts have struggled with this same question in a new context—the digital media. The dramatic increase in the number of student speech cases involving the Internet, mobile phones, and video cameras begs for a closer examination of the scope of school officials’ authority to censor the expression of minors as well as the scope of juvenile speech rights generally. This Article takes a close …

The Perspective Of A Junior Circuit Judge On Judicial Modesty, William H. Pryor Jr. Nov 2012

The Perspective Of A Junior Circuit Judge On Judicial Modesty, William H. Pryor Jr.

Florida Law Review

My topic today is judicial modesty, which some critics of the federal judiciary might say is an oxymoron. After all, these critics, in recent years, have dubbed it “the imperial judiciary,” “the most dangerous branch,” and “our judicial oligarchy.” Modesty is not a typical charge against the federal courts. After I provide an overview of judicial modesty based on what the Chief Justice and Judge Posner have said about it, I will address two aspects of my work that provide opportunities to display judicial modesty. First, I will address an aspect of the adjudicative work of the courts of appeals: …
