Role Of Cytochrome P4501a1 In Vasoreactivity And Blood Pressure Regulation Mediated By Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Njotu Larry Agbor Dec 2012

Role Of Cytochrome P4501a1 In Vasoreactivity And Blood Pressure Regulation Mediated By Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Njotu Larry Agbor

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor involved in the metabolism of environmental pollutants including halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, for example, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-ρ-dioxin (TCDD). The AHR and its downstream target gene cytochrome P4501A1 (CYP1A1) are also involved in cardiovascular development. AHR knockout (KO) mice are hypotensive, with cardiac hypertrophy. Additionally, CYP1A1 is involved in the production of potent vasodilator metabolites from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) metabolism. Thus, we hypothesize that the AHR and its downstream target gene, CYP1A1, both contribute to normal vascular reactivity of blood vessels and to blood pressure (BP) regulation. We generated mice with …

In addition, this paper answers the question of how tracking affects students’ self- concept and self-esteem. Lastly, it examines changes in teacher attitude with respect to each track level and the impact of ability grouping on classroom structure …

The Church Of Craiglockhart: Wilfred Owen And Siegfried Sassoon‘S Critique And Use Of Religion In Their World War I Poetry, Brian Karsten Dec 2012

The Church Of Craiglockhart: Wilfred Owen And Siegfried Sassoon‘S Critique And Use Of Religion In Their World War I Poetry, Brian Karsten

Masters Theses

Throughout history, faith and religious principles have been used as motivation for war. Accordingly, political leaders, religious leaders, and writers all used religion-themed propaganda to encourage enlistment in World War I. Two soldier poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, after meeting in the asylum of Craiglockhart, together recognized the injustice represented in using faith to promote warfare. Subsequently, they wrote poetry which criticized the religious and political hierarchy, countered the theology used in propaganda, and attempted to reveal the atrocities in battle. Although Sassoon‘s poetry remained satirical of the use of religion, Owen recognized its power and used religion and …

Mountain Monitor-3rd Quarter 2012, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

The major metropolitan areas of the Intermountain West finally put the housing bust behind them in the third quarter of 2012 and in most places made solid progress. House prices rose in all 10 major metropolitan markets in the months from June to September for the first time since the recession began. Likewise, output growth accelerated and the unemployment rate continued to fall. Unfortunately none of this prevented the region’s already feeble jobs recovery from slowing.

The Utah Model: Lessons For Regional Planning, Brenda C. Scheer Dec 2012

The Utah Model: Lessons For Regional Planning, Brenda C. Scheer

Brookings Mountain West Publications

Utah has become an unlikely leader in regional planning through a voluntary partnership of key leaders, agencies, local government, and the general public. Given that regional planning efforts around the nation have generally evoked strong reactions from residents concerned about losing local control, the success of Envision Utah—the organization that emerged as a key driver of regional planning in Utah—in building a consensus around regional growth management holds lessons for other regions.

Envision Utah adopted several strategies that have distinguished Utah’s regional planning efforts from other regions and given rise to what can be called the “Utah model” of collaborative …

E-Learning In Multi-Cultural Environments: An Analysis Of Online Cabin Crew Training, Jose Felix De Brito Neto

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Throughout the first decade of this century, the airline industry struggled with many challenges stemming from unstable oil prices and natural disasters. Attention was given to people as tools for competitive advantage. The airline industry focused on Human Resource Management and, as a result, e-learning gained increasing attention as it imparted knowledge on an asynchronous and global basis with substantially reduced costs. However, while focusing on learning technologies, organizations failed to acknowledge learners needs and cultural backgrounds by creating neutral e-learning environments, which resulted in ineffective training and reduced performance improvement. This thesis aimed to study the perceptions of a …

Television And Fanfiction Online: Finding Identity, Meaning, And Community, Erin B. Waggoner

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on fanfiction culture online, particularly how the stories relate to television fandoms and a need to participate or reinterpret a text on an individual and a global level to find meaning in the encoded messages. The study follows theoretical groundwork from Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding and Walter R. Fisher’s narrative paradigm. Philosophical considerations are given to communitarian ethics and how humans innately need community to successfully fulfill the need to communicate with others. Through ethnographic research, the study discovers how and why fanfiction is being used to uncover and discover identity, meaning, and community by exploring a community …

Using Interpersonal Communication And Social Penetration As A Means Of Strengthening Mentorships In High Schools, Jonathan Max Dashner

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Mentoring is an educational process wherein a more experienced person takes time and invests it in a less experienced person in guiding that person in areas of professional life, academic life, and personal life. In today’s high schools, students need teachers to guide them through both their academic lives and also their tumultuous personal lives. Through the Phenomenological Tradition, teachers can mentor students by sharing their stories and listening to the stories of their mentee students. By utilizing social penetration, teacher mentors, through the use of interpersonal communication skills, learn more about their students’ personal lives while divulging more of …

Communication Of Recycling Through Labeling And Packaging, Serena Mistry Dec 2012

Communication Of Recycling Through Labeling And Packaging, Serena Mistry

Graphic Communication

Recycling has become a more prevalent practice in the last few decades. However, the labeling system on today’s packaging is not always clear in indicating whether something is recyclable. Recently, there has been a great deal of attention directed at a new system, known as the How2Recycle label, an innovative labeling system expected to launch in the next few years. As the population continues to grow at unprecedented levels and more strain is placed on the global environment, recycling becomes more crucial. In the United States, the lack of a standard system for recycling on labeling and packaging deters people …

The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson Dec 2012

The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson

Theses

It is difficult, if not impossible to find another code-switching condition that allows for the production of "simultaneous" language use in communication like that which is found in bimodal bilingualism. In 2002, Bauer, Hall, and Kruth conducted a study that examined code-switching in a play context for a German/English bilingual child. Emmorey, Borinstein, and Thomson in 2005 investigated bimodal bilingualism in adults. However there has not been a study like these for hearing children using ASL/English who have Deaf parents. By applying Bauer, Hall, and Kruth's study as a template for research into code-switching and adapting some of the processes …

Genetic Admixture And Tooth Size In An Enslaved Population From Newton Plantation, Barbados, Susannah Munson

Theses

This study examined the amount of European genetic admixture in the enslaved African population from Newton Plantation, Barbados. Newton Plantation was a British sugar plantation from the 17th to 19th centuries. Approximately 150 individuals were recovered from an unmarked slave cemetery during archaeological investigations in the 1970s and 1990s. Using maximum mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth measurements of the available teeth from the individuals in the cemetery, Newton was compared to nineteen comparative samples of African, European, African American and European American populations that date from the time of British colonization to the 20th century. Previous European admixture estimations in the …

Studies On Spreading Depolarization In Healthy And Metabolically Compromised Brain Tissues, Isamu Aiba

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Spreading depolarization (SD) is a slowly propagating wave of depolarization of neurons and glia. Since its original discovery in 1944, SD has been observed in various experimental settings, both in vitro and in vivo. SD has recently been detected in brains of human patients with various injuries, and a contribution of SD to deleterious consequences of acute brain injury is increasingly accepted. iv The present dissertation work focus mainly on the characterization of SD and cellular events associated with it. Main interests of these studies are on underlying mechanisms that convert non-injurious factors into mediators of acute neuronal injury. One …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Histamine H3 Receptor Modulation Of Glutamate Release And Long-Term Potentiation In The Rat Dentate Gyrus, Rafael Koerich Varaschin Dec 2012

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Histamine H3 Receptor Modulation Of Glutamate Release And Long-Term Potentiation In The Rat Dentate Gyrus, Rafael Koerich Varaschin

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder exhibit long lasting behavioral impairments, such as learning disabilities, problems in executive functioning and memory deficits. Currently, there are no rationally designed, clinically available pharmacological tools to circumvent prenatal alcohol-induced cognitive deficits. Recently, using a rat model of voluntary drinking during pregnancy, Savage and collaborators (2010) showed that the inverse agonist of histamine H3 receptors reverses fetal ethanol-induced deficits in learning and memory, without further increasing cognition in control rats. These differential effects and the notion that H3 receptors reside in presynaptic nerve terminals to inhibit neurotransmitter release, led to the hypothesis that fetal …

The Unstructured Grid Incompressible Navier-Stokes Algorithm For Convective Heat Transfer Based On Artificial Compressibility, Jessica Elaine Kress

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The development of an explicit unstructured grid finite-volume scheme for solving the full incompressible Navier-Stokes equations along with the energy equation in a strongly coupled manner is presented. The Boussinesq approximation is utilized to account for thermal buoyancy. The method of artificial compressibilty is used to solve the resulting equations in a time marching fashion. Roe's approximate Riemann solver is used for the construction of the numerical flux. An eigensystem is derived for the flux Jacobian matrix, which is used in the evaluation of the numerical flux and the characteristic variable boundary conditions. The resulting algorithm is validated by simulating …

The Effect Of Pause Duration On Intelligibility Of Non-Native Spontaneous Oral Discourse, Ryan Frederick Lege Dec 2012

The Effect Of Pause Duration On Intelligibility Of Non-Native Spontaneous Oral Discourse, Ryan Frederick Lege

Theses and Dissertations

Pausing is a natural part of human speech. Pausing is used to segment speech, negotiate meaning, and allow for breathing. In oral speech, pausing, along with other suprasegmental features, plays a critical role in creating meaning as comprehensible speech is seen as a goal for language learners around the world. In order to be comprehensible, language learners need to learn to pause correctly in their speaking. Though this notion is widely accepted by applied linguists and many language teachers, the effect of pausing on intelligibility of spontaneous oral discourse has not been established by empirical data. This study isolates pause …
