Graph Matching Based Decision Support Tools For Mitigating Spread Of Infectious Diseases Like H1n1, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Kedar Sambhoos Nov 2012

Graph Matching Based Decision Support Tools For Mitigating Spread Of Infectious Diseases Like H1n1, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Kedar Sambhoos

Faculty Articles

Diseases like H1N1 can be prevented from becoming a wide spread epidemic through timely detection and containment measures. Similarity of H1N1 symptoms to any common flu and its alarming rate of spread through animals and humans complicate the deployment of such strategies. We use dynamic implementation of graph matching methods to overcome these challenges. Specifically, we formulate a mixed integer programming model (MIP) that analyzes patient symptom data available at hospitals to generate patient graph match scores. Successful matches are then used to update counters that generate alerts to the Public Health Department when the counters surpass the threshold values. …

Surf Bather Drowning Risk And Exposure-Related Factors Identified By An Expert Panel, Damian Morgan, Joan Ozanne-Smith Nov 2012

Surf Bather Drowning Risk And Exposure-Related Factors Identified By An Expert Panel, Damian Morgan, Joan Ozanne-Smith

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

In the absence of an established literature, identifying and quantifying surf bather drowning risk factors requires a clearly defined problem-focused research strategy. To initiate this strategy, nominal group technique (NGT) was used to identify and rank risk and water exposure-related factors based on consensus of an expert panel. The results identified, in order, level of experience (encompassing swimming ability in surf conditions), lack of local knowledge (encompassing awareness of surf hazards, including rip currents), and surf conditions (encompassing prevailing wave height and rip currents) as the three most influential surf bather drowning risk factors. Factors most influential on exposure to …

Measuring Group Synchrony: A Cluster-Phase Method For Analyzing Multivariate Movement Time-Series, Michael J. Richardson, Randi L. Garcia, Till D. Frank, Madison Gergor, Kerry L. Marsh

Psychology: Faculty Publications

A new method for assessing group synchrony is introduced as being potentially useful for objectively determining degree of group cohesiveness or entitativity. The cluster-phase method of Frank and Richardson (2010) was used to analyze movement data from the rocking chair movements of six-member groups who rocked their chairs while seated in a circle facing the center. In some trials group members had no information about others’ movements (their eyes were shut) or they had their eyes open and gazed at a marker in the center of the group. As predicted, the group level synchrony measure was able to distinguish between …

Science And Technology Resources On The Internet: Biodiversity Web Resources, John Creech

Library Scholarship

Biodiversity, a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity," was first used by Walter G. Rosen during a planning meeting for the 1986 National Forum on BioDiversity held in Washington, DC, while the first appearance of the word in the print literature likely occurred with the 1988 publication of the proceedings of this conference (Hawksworth 1995). The term "biodiversity" first appeared in the Biodiversity Web Resources http://www.istl.org/12-fall/internet.html 1 of 15 3/11/14 11:26 AM BIOSIS database in 1988 with four references, but by April of 1994 the count of citations had increased to 888 (Hawksworth 1995).

Over the last decade scientists have …

The Importance Of Host Plant Limitation For Caterpillars Of An Arctiid Moth (Platyprepia Virginalis) Varies Spatially, Richard Karban, Patrick Grof-Tisza, John L. Maron, Marcel Holyoak

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Spatial dynamic theories such as source–sink models frequently describe habitat-specific demographies, yet there are surprisingly few field studies that have examined how and why interacting species vary in their dynamics across multiple habitat types. We studied the spatial pattern of interaction between a chewing herbivore and its primary larval host plant in two habitat types. We found that the interaction between an arctiid caterpillar (Platyprepia virginalis) and its host (Lupinus arboreus) differed in wet vs. upland dry habitats, as did yearly population dynamics for the caterpillar. In upland sites, there was a strong positive relationship between …

Naturalization Of Sequoiadendron Giganteum (Cupressaceae) In Montane Southern California, Rudolf Schmid, Mena Schmid

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

After the August 1974 fire in the upper Hall Canyon area on the southwestern flank of Black Mountain in the northwestern San Jacinto Mountains, Riverside County, California, the United States Forest Service revegetated the burn in the mixed-conifer forest with the Sierra Nevada endemic Sequoiadendron giganteum (Cupressaceae). On 1 May 2009 a GPS census starting at the head of Hall Canyon revealed both in the canyon and upslope beyond it at least 157 individuals in the vicinity of the Black Mountain Trail, plus an outlier 450 m distant near the summit. This species alien to southern California is regenerating prolifically …

Using Macroinvertebrate Community Composition To Distinguish Between Natural And Anthropogenic Sedimentation, Amanda E. Schutt Sep 2012

Using Macroinvertebrate Community Composition To Distinguish Between Natural And Anthropogenic Sedimentation, Amanda E. Schutt

Theses and Dissertations

Excess fine sediment from human activity is a major pollutant to streams across the U.S.; however, distinguishing human-induced sedimentation from natural fine sediment is complex. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently implemented a protocol for the quantitative field assessment of human-induced sedimentation using measurements of stream geomorphology. Macroinvertebrate community composition, streambed sediment stability, and sediment composition were studied at 49 sites in the James River watershed in central Virginia. Sediment composition was found to be a stronger driver of community composition than sediment stability. Although I was not able to show that macroinvertebrate metrics were related to sediment stability independently …

Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson Sep 2012

Reinterpreting Bateman Gradients: Multiple Mating And Selection In Both Sexes Of A Songbird Species, N.M. Gerlach, J.W Mcglothlin, P.G Parker, E.D Ketterson

Biology Department Faculty Works

Bateman’s principle, which states that male reproductive success should increase with multiple mating, whereas female reproductive success should not, has long been used to explain sex differences in behavior. The statistical relationship between mating success and reproductive success, or Bateman gradient, has been proposed as a way to quantify sex differences in sexual selection. We used a long-term data set on the distribution of paternity in the socially monogamous dark-eyed junco to examine the effect of multiple mating on lifetime reproductive success and to determine the relative contributions of within-pair and extra-pair mating. Both sexes exhibited a strong positive Bateman …

Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas Aug 2012

Regional Variation In Mandibular Morphology In The Prehistoric Japanese Populations Of The JōMon And Okhotsk, Rogelio A. Arenas

Anthropology

Examination of 11 metric mandibular traits was conducted on data collected from several Jōmon and Okhotsk sites for the purpose of analyzing potential impacts of dietary differences on mandibular morphology for these groups. Based on the dietary history of the populations and their respective regions, Middle Jōmon (5,000 - 3,000 BP) sites would share comparable robusticities across all regions based on social and economic continuity as a stable climate resulted in abundant dietary resources which fostered a growth in population in the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido. As the climate cooled in the Late/Final Jōmon (4,000 - 2,000 BP), …

A Two-Hundred Year History Of Ornithology, Avian Biology, Bird Watching, And Birding In Kansas (1810–2010), Thomas G. Shane

Zea E-Books Collection

The first two centuries of bird study in Kansas essentially can be split into 50 year intervals since Zebulon Pike’s 1810 publication, an account of his explorations. The first 50 years were records of explorers crossing Kansas collecting bird specimens; many were Army doctors. The second half of the 19th Century was a continuation of explorers and those affiliated with museums obtaining bird specimens and the establishment of colleges and universities with faculty members also collecting birds and making observations. The first half of the 20th Century was a period of college faculties primarily composed of vertebrate zoologists who had …

The Role Of Individual Behavior Type In Mediating Indirect Interactions, Blaine D. Griffen, Benjamin J. Toscano, John Gatto Aug 2012

The Role Of Individual Behavior Type In Mediating Indirect Interactions, Blaine D. Griffen, Benjamin J. Toscano, John Gatto

Faculty Publications

Trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMII) play an important role in structuring natural communities, and numerous studies have experimentally demonstrated their presence in a variety of systems. However, these studies have largely examined the presence or absence of traits that are responsible for these interactions, without considering natural variation between individuals in the extent to which these traits are manifested. We used a well-documented TMII to investigate the importance of individual behavior type for determining the strength of the TMII. The toadfish Opsanus tau has an indirect positive influence on bivalve survival because the mud crab Panopeus herbstii, a consumer of bivalves, …

Invasion Of Centaurea Nigrescens, Tyrol Knapweed, In North America, Rebecca Ann Grella Aug 2012

Invasion Of Centaurea Nigrescens, Tyrol Knapweed, In North America, Rebecca Ann Grella

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Centaurea nigrescens is a native plant in Europe that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. This dissertation focuses on the introduction and spread of C. nigrescens across North America using herbaria records and genetic differences between native and non-native populations to construct likely invasion routes. Herbarium records and the results of a Minimum Cost Arborescence model coupled with chloroplast DNA analysis support the hypothesis that there was an initial introduction of C. nigrescens near Worcester, Massachusetts in 1830. Significant haplotype differences between the populations from the northeastern and the northwestern US support the hypothesis that there was a …

Role Of The Leguminous Shrub Amorpha Canescens (Leadplant) In The Nebraska Sandhills Grasslands: Water Relations And Patterns Of Water Uptake, Adam Yarina

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study investigated the ecophysiological role of Amorpha canescens, a leguminous shrub native to the Nebraska Sandhills. Although A. canescens is an important ecological player in the Sandhills, its impacts on the surrounding plant community are poorly understood. To remedy this, two sites were selected for study at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory near Whitman, Nebraska – one with A. canescens (G-L) and one without A. canescens (G-NL). Both sites contained five representative herbaceous species: two C3 grasses (Hesperostipa comata and Koeleria macrantha), two C4 grasses (Andropogon hallii and Calamovilfa longifolia), and one forb …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rice sheath blight (ShB) is one of the most prevalent diseases in rice. The significance of this disease is increasing due to more intensive production practices globally. Rhizoctonia solani Kühn AG 1 - IA [teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris (A.B. Frank) Donk] is considered the primary ShB pathogen of rice. However, Rhizoctonia oryzae-sativae, Rhizoctonia oryzae, and R. solani AG 2 and AG 11, have also been isolated from sheath blight-like lesions on rice.Up to now, there is little information on genetic diversity and patterns of molecular evolution of the fungus, and there is no study on the structure of the R. solani …

Chromosomal Patterns In Populations Of The Black Fly Simulium Fibrinflatum Twinn (Diptera: Simuliidae), Kyle Parks

All Theses

Cryptic species are an important component of biodiversity, although most cryptic species have yet to be discovered. Cytogenetic studies of polytene chromosomes offer a unique level of resolution for detecting cryptic species in the family Simuliidae. Simulium fibrinflatum is a black fly morphospecies that is suspected to contain cryptic species because of its broad geographic range and variable pupal gill structure. Populations of Simulium fibrinflatum from the Saugahatchee River, AL; Anthony Shoals, GA; LaHave River, Nova Scotia; Westfield River, MA; Chauga River, SC; and Enoree River, SC, were sampled and cytogenetically analyzed to test for the presence of cryptic species. …

Ecology And Phylogeny Of The Biting-Midge Genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), Dustin Swanson

All Dissertations

Flies of the genus Culicoides are small, biting midges in the family Ceratopogonidae. These flies are of medical, veterinary, and economic importance because their blood-feeding behavior can cause stress to hosts and transmit disease agents. Despite the importance of these flies, little is known about their biology, especially the ecology of the immature stages and the phylogenetic relationships among taxa. The objectives of my study were to address these two areas of Culicoides biology.
Larval Culicoides were collected from aquatic habitats in four ecoregions of South Carolina, USA. Eleven ecological variables were recorded for each sample. Larvae were identified by …

Canopy Effects On Tropical Leaf Litter Arthropods, Theodore Peter Sumnicht Jul 2012

Canopy Effects On Tropical Leaf Litter Arthropods, Theodore Peter Sumnicht

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in canopy structure, which are likely to occur at faster rates due to climate change, affect leaf litter structure and the ecology of litter-dwelling organisms. One such change is the increased abundance of lianas in tropical forest canopies. Here, I quantify effects of these changes on tropical leaf litter arthropod communities by surveying patches of Panamanian forest where lianas have been removed, and experimentally isolating two aspects of the litter environment affected by canopy structure: incident light and litter depth. Increased litter produced by liana cutting resulted in increases in ant species richness and arthropod abundance. Structural complexity was …

Soil Geomorphology Of The Eastern Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research Site, Debra Bryan-Ricketts Jul 2012

Soil Geomorphology Of The Eastern Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research Site, Debra Bryan-Ricketts

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Soils in the arid to semi-arid piedmont landscapes of central New Mexico were examined in order to evaluate surficial processes and landscape evolution in the central Rio Grande Rift. These soils were found to contain key information regarding pedologic and geomorphic responses to climate change, rifting and base level drop. A rare association of sepiolite and palygorskite occurs in old soils formed in eolian fines. Pedologic and mineralogical data indicate that palygorskite formed by transformation of dust-borne, aluminum-rich minerals, and that sepiolite subsequently formed by transformation of palygorskite. The association of these two minerals, and geomorphic observations, confirm the existence …

Eco Evidence Database: A Distributed Modelling Resource For Systematic Literature Analysis In Environmental Science And Management, J. Angus Webb, Siobhan C. De Little, Kimberly A. Miller, Michael J. Stewardson

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Balancing the needs of the environment with human uses of natural ecosystems relies on understanding causal relationships between environmental stressors and ecological responses. Causal relationships are difficult to demonstrate in natural environments due to environmental heterogeneity, lack of replication, and confounding influences. Published scientific literature is a currently under-used source of evidence for such analyses. We describe the Eco Evidence Database – a web database application for storing and sharing the atomized findings of research studies from the literature. This ‘evidence’ can then be used in synthesis studies to test cause-effect hypotheses. The database provides a permanent, machine-independent repository for …

Dynamics Of Genetic Structure Of Population With Age Structure During Optimal Harvest With Constant Quota, Oksana Zhdanova, Efim Frisman Jul 2012

Dynamics Of Genetic Structure Of Population With Age Structure During Optimal Harvest With Constant Quota, Oksana Zhdanova, Efim Frisman

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Ecological and genetic consequences of optimal equilibrium harvest with constant quota in uniform and two-aged populations have been considered in this work. It has been shown analytically that maximum of equilibrium harvest income is unreachable when both age groups are harvested simultaneously. The optimal strategy of harvest is the catch of fixed portion from single age group. In addition, optimal harvest may result not only in a change in the dynamic mode of the system, but also in a considerable change in the genetic composition of the population.
