A Study Of Forms And Functions Of Directives In Advice Columns From English-Daily / Shaidatul Akma Adi Kasuma, Adi Kasuma Shaidatul Akma

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study investigates the forms and functions of directives in an advice column of a local newspaper. The forms and functions of directives are intricately related to the protection of face. Thus, the (im)politeness and face-saving strategies used in the advice texts are also analysed. The forms and functions of directives are identified based on the theoretical frameworks of Ervin-Tripp’s (1976), Blum-Kulka (1987) and Eken’s (1996). To rationalize the relationship between forms and functions of directives and the protection of face, the theoretical frameworks of (im)politeness adopted are the positive-negative politeness theory (Brown and Levinson, 1978, 1987) and the frame-based …

Examining Graduate Students' Self-Reported Research Outcomes, Affinity-Seeking Behaviors, And Perceptions Of Relational Quality With Advisors From A Lmx Perspective., Stephanie Shimotsu Jan 2012

Examining Graduate Students' Self-Reported Research Outcomes, Affinity-Seeking Behaviors, And Perceptions Of Relational Quality With Advisors From A Lmx Perspective., Stephanie Shimotsu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using LMX theory as an overarching framework in the instructional communication context, this dissertation both investigates graduate students’ affinity-seeking behaviors (i.e., affinity-seeking competence, strategic performance, use of affinity-seeking strategies) and research outcomes (i.e., research productivity, research self-efficacy, affective commitment, career commitment) that are associated with perceived relationship quality with advisors. Three hypotheses were forwarded to address the relationships among graduate students’ affinity-seeking behaviors, research outcomes, and perceptions of relationship quality with advisors. The results of this dissertation provided some degree of support for each hypothesis. Most notably, significant positive relationships were found among graduate student affinity-seeking behaviors and perceptions of …

Hegemonic Peter?: A Critical Analysis Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Family Guy, Justin Danowski Jan 2012

Hegemonic Peter?: A Critical Analysis Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Family Guy, Justin Danowski

Masters Theses

Hegemonic masculinity is a constantly evolving and highly nuanced theory. The original definition was designed to study the oppression males exert over females. Later definitions expanded on the original to include young, effeminate or gay men. In the realm of television, hegemonic masculine forces are perpetuated by not only male characters but marginalized groups as well. This creates gender stereotypes to be accepted and embraced as the norm in a culture. This project takes a critical look at the animated television comedy Family Guy and explains how hegemonic masculinity is portrayed throughout the episode "Family Gay". To accomplish this, the …

A Plaguing Militainment: Ideology, Metaphor, And Interpellation In Thq's "Homefront", Brendan G.A. Hughes

Masters Theses

Roger Stahl's book Militainment, Inc. has set the standard for studying the convergence of military culture and popular entertainment-otherwise known as militainment. This concept is easily discernible for rhetorical critics studying discursive texts in the late twentieth century, particularly after the start of the war on terror. This project examines a militainment text, the first-person shooter videogame Homefront. Produced by design company THQ and developed by Kaos studios, this game foreshadows the future of the United States should Kim Jong-Il's son succeed in unifying the divided peninsula and the American superpower crumble. After reviewing relevant literature and outlining three important …

The Relationship Between Dialectical Self And Hedonic, Eudaimonic, And Social Well-Being, Ayaka Hisanaga Jan 2012

The Relationship Between Dialectical Self And Hedonic, Eudaimonic, And Social Well-Being, Ayaka Hisanaga

Masters Theses

The present study examined the relationship between a dialectical self and three different conceptions of well-being: hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well-being. Dialectical self refers to the ability to recognize contradictions and changes in the self. The study was built upon previous research by Spencer-Rodgers and her colleagues (2004) that found a negative relationship between being dialectical and hedonic well-being (specifically selfesteem and life satisfaction). Although this previous study indicated that the more one perceives oneself as tolerant of contradiction and change, the more one would tend to experience life dissatisfaction and negative feelings (i.e., hedonic well-being), the current study predicted …

The Mismangement Of Marital Disclosures In The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, Randi Cariella Campbell Jan 2012

The Mismangement Of Marital Disclosures In The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, Randi Cariella Campbell

Theses and Dissertations--Communication

Reality television is unique from other television programming because its format is less scripted than typical entertainment television programs, but not as candid as documentary style shows. Aspects of cast members’ private lives are publicly aired as “real.” The consequences for airing one’s private life in the public sphere are unclear. This may be especially important to study when the private disclosures reveal activities that may be unethical, immoral, illegal, or abusive. Petronio’s (date) communication privacy management theory was used to examine the martial disclosures that occurred between Taylor and Russell Armstrong, cast members of the reality television show The …

Mary And Women In Late Imperial Russian Orthodoxy, Vera Shevzov Jan 2012

Mary And Women In Late Imperial Russian Orthodoxy, Vera Shevzov

Religion: Faculty Books

Russian women of the nineteenth century are often thought of in their literary incarnations as the heroines of novels such as Anna Karenina and War and Peace. But their real-life counterparts are now becoming better understood as active contributors to Russia's varied cultural landscape. This collection of essays examines the lives of women across Russia - from wealthy noblewomen in St Petersburg to desperately poor peasants in Siberia - discussing their interaction with the Church and the law, and their rich contribution to music, art, literature and theatre. It shows how women struggled for greater autonomy and, both individually and …

Introduction: Continuity And Change In Russian Culture, Dmitri N. Shalin Jan 2012

Introduction: Continuity And Change In Russian Culture, Dmitri N. Shalin

Russian Culture

This project on Russian culture goes back to the Spring of 1990 when several American and Russian scholars converged at the Russian Research Center at Harvard University and decided to join forces in a study of changes sweeping the Soviet Union. From the start, the participants agreed that they would not try to chase fast breaking news from Russia -- a hopeless task given the pace of recent changes, but rather would focus on the continuity and change in Russian culture, on the long-term social forces that compel the Russian people to reexamine old ways and reevaluate old values.

Does Social Media Usage Translate To Offline Voting And Civic Engagement?, Sara Cureton

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

One of the most important objectives of media is to provide citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions. Based on the theory of technological determinism by scholars such as Marshall McLuhan, the innovations of a society are driven by its technology, so the widely-used medium of social media has been found to have a growing influence in civic matters. This thesis examined how social media usage impacted offline civic engagement. Through an analysis of a sample of 49 political candidates' Facebook and Twitter activity, this study questioned whether social media impacted the outcome of the 2012 General …

Antimicrobial Activity, Cytotoxicity And Phytochemical Analyses Of Rhus Aromatica, Rhus Glabra And Sanguinaria Canadensis Native To South Dakota, Gitanjali Nandakafle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A total of twenty five South Dakota native medicinal plants were screened against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli using a disk diffusion assay. Out of these 25 plants, three plants Rhus aromatica, Rhus glabra and Sanguinaria canadensis demonstrated the highest bacterial inhibition. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of these plant extracts were determined using a bacterial enumeration assay. Alamar Blue in vitro cytotoxicity test showed that all extracts have some toxic effect to porcine intestinal epithelial cell lines. Phytochemical analysis of these plant extracts indicated the presence high concentration of flavonoids and condensed tannins in R. aromatica and that R. glabra contained …

Race, Hegemony, And The Birth Of Rock & Roll, Paul Linden Jan 2012

Race, Hegemony, And The Birth Of Rock & Roll, Paul Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

The Blues Had a Baby and They Named it Rock & Roll

On his Grammy winning album, Hard Again, McKinley Morganfield (a.k.a. “Muddy Waters”) sings his song The Blues Had a Baby and They Named it Rock & Roll.1 What are the racial and social implications of this rebirth? In this study, I will argue that the cultural context during the birth of Rock & Roll was such that Blues music had to be “reborn” in order to enter into the predominantly white mainstream. From the perspective of a Blues musician, Morganfield’s use of the idea of rebirth is a …

Writing The Self: Feminist Experiment And Cultural Identity, Jill Darling Jan 2012

Writing The Self: Feminist Experiment And Cultural Identity, Jill Darling

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation examines how twentieth-century experimental women writers construct non/narrative texts whose text-subjects mediate identity and call for increased possibilities for subject-identification in the world. The use of innovative formal strategies and experiment with narrative, combined with the content of identity critique, make these texts political projects that variously explore gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity in relation to contemporary American culture. In this project I bring discussions of identity into the theorization of formally innovative writing. I work to move away from the kinds of essentializing practices of identity politics--in which subjects are fit into specific identity categories--and toward more …

The More She Longs For Home, The Farther Away It Appears: A Paradox Of Nostalgia In A Fulani Immigrant Girl’S Life, Kaoru Miyazawa Jan 2012

The More She Longs For Home, The Farther Away It Appears: A Paradox Of Nostalgia In A Fulani Immigrant Girl’S Life, Kaoru Miyazawa

Education Faculty Publications

Nostalgia, which is derived from the Greek words nos (returning home) and algia (pain), refers to longing for the loss of the familiar (Kaplan, 1987). The loss of our connection to the familiar is a painful experience as such loss is connected to a fundamental loss, the loss of ourselves. By losing a connection to familiar people, objects, and places that continue to remain the same from the past to the future, we also lose the continuity within ourselves. And this discontinuity of our past, present, and future selves creates anxiety within us (Milligan, 2003). The painful experience that accompanies …

Part I of this cluster introduction addresses how the articles contribute to an understanding of the intersection between race, culture, and colonialism within LatCrit scholarship. Part II addresses the authors' cross-disciplinary approach to their topic and how it fits within existing LatCrit scholarship. Part III discusses how the cluster articles reflect LatCrit's extensive discussion of colonialism, race, culture, and Puerto Rico. This will be followed by a few conclusions.

The Geopolitical Context Of Chamorro Cultural Preservation In Guam, U.S.A., Maria-Elena D. Diaz Jan 2012

The Geopolitical Context Of Chamorro Cultural Preservation In Guam, U.S.A., Maria-Elena D. Diaz

Ethnic Studies Review

An unincorporated Pacific Island territory of the United States, Guam has been under American rule since 1 898. While proudly "Chamorro," the descendants of indigenous islanders have been American citizens since 1 950. U.S. foreign policy, Americanization of island institutions, immigration flows from Asia and Micronesia, and economic uncertainty present challenges to the perpetuation of Chamorro culture-a syncretic blend of indigenous, Spanish, and American influences that has endured through centuries of foreign domination. As a gateway from the East to the United States and a frequent destination for Micronesian immigrants from the Compacts of Free Association, Guam regularly receives immigrants …

Transformational Leadership In China: The Role Of Trust And Harmony, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau Jan 2012

Transformational Leadership In China: The Role Of Trust And Harmony, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Management Faculty Research

Transformational leadership attracted a significant amount of scholarly attention in the past few decades. This study is designed to develop an effective transformational leadership model that works in the Chinese context. A model is proposed to clarify the mediating effects of trust and harmony on the relationship between transformational leadership and its effectiveness. The model provides a new perspective on leadership in the Chinese context that is ignored in the Western leadership literature. It also offers a clearer understanding of how best transformational leadership practice combines with traditional Chinese wisdom to do a better job in accounting for the leader-follower …

"I Could Kill You Quite Easily, Bella, Simply By Accident": Violence And Romance In Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" Saga, Samantha Amber Oakley Jan 2012

"I Could Kill You Quite Easily, Bella, Simply By Accident": Violence And Romance In Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" Saga, Samantha Amber Oakley

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis argues that Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga is an exemplification of rape culture due to its valorization of romantic relationships that are psychologically abusive, violent, and ultimately destructive. In my analysis, I use a postmodern feminist framework to examine the four main books in the series: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Specifically, focusing on how the female protagonist, Bella Swan, is portrayed, I interrogate the interactions with her two love interests, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black. I found that the romantic developments between Bella, Edward, and Jacob are depicted as violent and dangerous affairs that echo non-physically …

Theorizing History: Separate Spheres, The Public/Private Binary And A New Analytic For Family Law History, Danaya C. Wright Jan 2012

Theorizing History: Separate Spheres, The Public/Private Binary And A New Analytic For Family Law History, Danaya C. Wright

UF Law Faculty Publications

There is an extensive scholarship on separate spheres, the public/private binary, and family history that reveals a nuanced understanding of the interconnections and constructedness of these metaphors and rubrics traditionally used in family law history. In exploring the current understandings and limitations of these subjects as analytics for doing my own history of English family law, I turn to Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo’s critique that we limit our subjects and reinforce power differentials when we use a lens of difference in our scholarship. I first explore the lessons learned about the enduring nature of separate spheres and the power imbalances of …

Borders That Matter : Trans Identity Management, Reese C. Kelly Jan 2012

Borders That Matter : Trans Identity Management, Reese C. Kelly

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation presents the responses, strategies, and meaning-making processes that forty trans (transgender) people engaged in when confronted with or when preparing for the possibility of encountering two different types of identity checkpoints, or what I regard as "borders": situations where sexed bodies and presentations of self would be matched against identity documents or records, and the use or attempted use of sex-segregated facilities. The project addresses the questions: In what ways do trans people prepare for and respond to identity inspections in border crossing scenarios? What strategies do they employ in order to successfully border cross? What effect does …

"Only A Girl Like This Can Know What's Happened To You" : Traumatic Subjects In Contemporary American Narratives, Allison Virginia Craig

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project is primarily concerned with the difficulty of representing traumatic experience and the problem of seeing violence and exploitation as natural and inevitable functions of social life. It argues that texts attempting to expose exploitive hierarchies and structural injustices often risk having their stories subsumed and commodified by the profuseness and proliferation of countervailing messages about individual choice and personal freedom. This struggle is highlighted through historicizing five contemporary American narratives--Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm, the films Boys Don't Cry and Monster, Toni Morrison's Beloved, and Linda Hogan's Solar Storms--with and against critical concerns and popular texts. Furthermore, by employing …
