¿Smart Is The New Sexy?

The Icelandic Sagas As A Subject For Undergraduate Study, John P. Sexton Jan 2012

The Icelandic Sagas As A Subject For Undergraduate Study, John P. Sexton

English Faculty Publications

While medieval studies has dramatically expanded its scope and the texts taught as part of its subject over the past few decades, the study of Icelandic saga literature is still a fringe discipline, particularly in North American academe. Rarer still is undergraduate exposure to the sagas, despite their appeal as texts and the rich possibilities they offer to students trained in Anglo-Saxon literature (or at least Beowulf) and familiar with Norse myth and legend through Tolkien or Marvel comics. The insular nature of the culture from which the literature springs is a contributing factor, of course—there is the undeniable …

A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge Jan 2012

A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge

College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty Publications

Historians of musical theatre have been ambivalent when assessing the historical significance of Gilbert and Sullivan upon the development of the American musical. Historical narratives typically jump from The Black Crook to Friml, with only passing reference to G&S (and Offenbach, and Strauss). Gilbert and Sullivan (encouraged by D’Oyly Carte), however, anticipated not only most of the formal elements, but also many of the creative/production processes of the American musical genre. The shows that we associate with the “Golden Era” of the American musical theatre contain many components that G&S devised three score years earlier. Historians should acknowledge the importance …

Family Structure And Risk Factors: An Investigation Into Emotional And Behavioural Outcomes For Nine-Year-Olds., Zara Lafferty

Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between family structure and risk factors for children’s emotional and behavioural outcomes at 9 years of age. Family structure in this study is defined as; married, separated, divorced, widowed and never married families. Three risk factors were identified from the literature; economic deprivation, maternal depression and life events. This study is a cross sectional quantitative analysis of the ‘Growing Up in Ireland’s’ child cohort (9 year olds) dataset. This is nationally representative sample of 9 year old children living in Ireland; the sample was collected through a two-stage, stratified random sampling approach. Of the 8,568 …

Controlled Delivery Of Tgf-Ss1 From Plga Nanoparticles, Pratik K. Vaidya

ETD Archive

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) typically manifest as localized wall weakening and dilation of the infrarenal aorta, which grows gradually, and ultimately leads to fatal rupture. It is caused due to overexpression of proteolytic enzymes (matrix metalloproteases or MMPs) resulting into disruption of tissue structure, especially elastic matrix, which cannot be regenerated by adult vascular cells. On account of post-operative complications associated with their surgical repair, there is a critical need for developing non-surgical strategies for slowing and even regressing AAA growth. Recent studies in our laboratory have demonstrated that 1 ng/mL of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) enhances regenerative repair by …

The Storm After The Storm: A Comparative Framing Analysis Of Governmental And News Reporting On Hurricane Katrina, Evan T. Zuverink Jan 2012

The Storm After The Storm: A Comparative Framing Analysis Of Governmental And News Reporting On Hurricane Katrina, Evan T. Zuverink

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Hurricane Katrina is widely regarded as the greatest natural disaster to ever befall the United States. Following the storm’s devastation of the Gulf Coast region, a media firestorm unleashed, seeking to ascribe responsibility to governmental actors for the “failed” response effort. Through a comparative framing analysis, this study sought to investigate how major news outlets, the White House, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency framed the response efforts that followed Hurricane Katrina.

Containing The Beat: An Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of The Beat Generation During The 1950s, Anna Lou Jessmer Jan 2012

Containing The Beat: An Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of The Beat Generation During The 1950s, Anna Lou Jessmer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The early Cold War era was a period marked by a fear of Communist subversion and a distrust of the other. It was during this time that the Beat Generation emerged in literature and society as a minority opinion group—failing to conform to mainstream norms and living outside the margins of acceptable American culture. In response to the Beat Generation and their dissenting viewpoints, the media framed the Beats in a mostly negative manner. This negative framing was fueled by a desire to delegitimize the Beats as well as any other dissenting groups that posed a threat to American ideology. …

Conservative Media And Political Socialization: Immigration, Gay Marriage, And Abortion As Presented By Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, And Cnn, Jeff Mckay Jan 2012

Conservative Media And Political Socialization: Immigration, Gay Marriage, And Abortion As Presented By Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, And Cnn, Jeff Mckay

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study addresses the political socialization of politically conservative individuals and how political ideologies seem to coalesce among individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds. The main issue that this study aims to tackle is the impact of conservative media on the political socialization of conservative individuals and how media as an agent of socialization might influence them to support ideas that are not to their benefit economically. For instance, conservative individuals from various backgrounds wholeheartedly support the same free market principles. However, the negative effect that capitalism has had on the liberty of middle and lower class citizens of the United …

Insurrectionary Womanliness: Gender And The (Boxing) Ring, Melanie J. Mcnaughton Jan 2012

Insurrectionary Womanliness: Gender And The (Boxing) Ring, Melanie J. Mcnaughton

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Integrating sociological theory on sport with Judith Butler’s concept of insurrectionary speech, the author explores why and how womanliness is produced and problematized. In particular, this article investigates how participating in combat sport violates conventional womanliness by foregrounding physical capability and aggression. Using her identity as a female fighter as a starting point to engage the cultural construction of womanliness, the author connects a critical/cultural look at gender and sport with autoethnography.

Merce Cunningham: The Accidental Icon, Jennifer Harris Jan 2012

Merce Cunningham: The Accidental Icon, Jennifer Harris

Honors Thesis Collection

In the summer of 1953, one could hardly call Merce Cunningham’s group of dancers “a company” in the formal sense of the term. At the time it was only one of many protean artistic experiments taking shape at Black Mountain College, a hotbed of intellectual activity where artists’ ideas circulated freely across the disciplines of music, dance, and the visual arts. Black Mountain fostered a collaborative setting for some of the most important creative minds of the second half of the twentieth century, yet during that summer their place in the American artistic pantheon was far from guaranteed. My thesis …

The Queer Sounds Of Justice: Contemporary Queer Musicking And Transformative Justice In The United States, S. M. Gray Jan 2012

The Queer Sounds Of Justice: Contemporary Queer Musicking And Transformative Justice In The United States, S. M. Gray

Honors Thesis Collection

This paper explores connections between social justice and music through the work of LGBT and queer musicians. Using a combination of personal interviews and research, each chapter highlights contemporary queer musicians and links their musicking with past music scenes, sociohistorical moments, and musicians. Beginning with the growing visibility of the LGBT population in the 1960s, I gradually move forward chronologically through the twentieth century to present-day, grounding the music scene of the era within the context of coinciding LGBT and queer politics, gender and sexuality academia, and feminist and queer theory. I simultaneously link each music scene to the present-day, …

This essay considers Finnegans Wake through the lens of Arcimboldo's art. Drawing on surrealism, French theory, and close readings of parts of Joyce's most difficult book, it shows the work to be visually richer and stranger than we imagined.

Meeting In The Middle: Making Use Of Popular Culture In The Classroom, Michelle Ronayne, Joanne Shayne, Johnny Nguyen Jan 2012

Meeting In The Middle: Making Use Of Popular Culture In The Classroom, Michelle Ronayne, Joanne Shayne, Johnny Nguyen

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to explore the current landscape of the 21st century Introductory Psychology classroom. The authors—graduate students and current teachers of psychology—are well aware of the need to move away from traditional, top-down approaches to teaching. Personal experience has convinced them that the standard lecture format does not engage all 21st century students. A belief in the need to actively engage students in introductory psychology courses is the basis for the present paper. Through the use of technology and active-learning classroom activities, teachers might succeed in meeting students of psychology “where they are,” thus improving the …

Time In Television Narrative: Exploring Temporality In 21st Century Programming, Melissa R. Ames Jan 2012

Time In Television Narrative: Exploring Temporality In 21st Century Programming, Melissa R. Ames

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This collection analyzes twenty-first-century American television programs that rely upon temporal and narrative experimentation. These shows play with time, slowing it down to unfold the narrative through time retardation and compression. They disrupt the chronological flow of time itself, using flashbacks and insisting that viewers be able to situate themselves in both the present and the past narrative threads. Although temporal play has existed on the small screen prior to the new millennium, never before has narrative time been so freely adapted in mainstream television. The essayists offer explanations for not only the frequency of time play in contemporary programming, …

Whither The "Year Of China"?, Denise Ho, Jared Flanery Jan 2012

Whither The "Year Of China"?, Denise Ho, Jared Flanery

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

To conclude my Chinese history lecture course at the University of Kentucky, I introduce my undergraduates to the concept of “soft power” and suggest that Confucius Institutes are emblematic of China’s cultural diplomacy, which aims to project a peaceful image abroad. Confucius Institutes are centers for teaching Chinese language and culture overseas; they are organized by an office known as Hanban in the Ministry of Education, though their funding comes directly from the Chinese government’s treasury. There are now over 350 Confucius Institutes in the world, and two of these are in the state of Kentucky.
