Fieldbus networks are all-digital, two-way, multi-drop communication systems that are used to connect field devices such as sensors and actuators, and controllers. These fieldbus network systems are also called networked control systems (NCS). Although, there are different varieties of fieldbus networks such as Foundation Field Bus, DeviceNet, and Profibus available in the automation industries, Controller Area Network (CAN) is more widely accepted in automotive applications. The growing popularity of, and demand for, fieldbus networks can be attributed to several advantages they have, such as: reduction in capital costs, interoperability, and greater system functionality. However, as the complexity of modern fieldbus …

Securing Natural Justice In Arbitration Proceedings, Austin Ignatius Pulle

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The legitimacy and integrity of any system that adjudicates the rights and duties ofpersons would be evaluated by reference to the standards required by the principles of natural justice. Arbitration is becoming more popular as a system of dispute resolution because of the exponential increase of cross-border transactions that are a feature of globalization. Now arbitrations take place in countries that lack a well-developed arbitration culture. Courts in some of these countries have yet to develop a coherent body of law that clarifies and gives effect to the principles of natural justice. Moreover, important values protected by natural justice principles …

Total Organic Carbon Rejection In Osmotic Distillation, Hali Laraelizabeth Shaw Jan 2012

Total Organic Carbon Rejection In Osmotic Distillation, Hali Laraelizabeth Shaw

Master's Theses

The osmotic distillation (OD) system is a spacecraft wastewater recycling system designed to produce potable water from human urine and humidity condensate. The OD system uses vapor-liquid separation to purify the wastewater across an osmotic distillation membrane, which is microporous and hydrophobic. When treating a mixture of urine and humidity condensate, the OD can produce water with a non-purgeable total organic carbon (NPTOC) concentration of less than 7 ppm; however, it is unclear what mechanism allows the system to achieve such a high total organic carbon (TOC) rejection when compared to other conventional distillation-based water treatment systems.

The hypothesis for …

Constructing And Deconstructing Border Wars, Damien Chadsworth Wendel Jan 2012

Constructing And Deconstructing Border Wars, Damien Chadsworth Wendel

Master's Theses

Discussing a border's location, how it functions, and who is allowed to cross it can quickly give rise to heated arguments that at times escalate to violent disputes. In order to better understand the tension surrounding borders, a mediated-rhetorical critique of National Geographic's television show Border Wars was conducted. Performing this critique enables an understanding of the rhetorical strategies the show employs to construct and reify the Mexico/U.S. border, keep out outlaw discourse from influencing the civic imaginary, and answer the question, "Is there an end in sight?" This thesis will specifically address these questions: What rhetorical strategies does Border …

Providing Public Key Certificate Authorization And Policy With Dns, Matthew Lidestri Jan 2012

Providing Public Key Certificate Authorization And Policy With Dns, Matthew Lidestri

Theses

Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) instills trust in certificates commonly used to secure email, web traffic, VPNs, file transfers, and other forms of network communication. Due to a number of successful attacks against certificate authorities, malicious parties have illegitimately acquired trusted certificates for widely used online services, government agencies, and other important organizations. These incidents, and the potential for future attacks of a similar nature, present notable risk to PKI and global security as a whole. The proposed Certificate Policy Framework (CPF) offers a mechanism for organizations to control which certificates are authorized to authenticate their services. This DNS-based protocol allows …

Cloning And Characterization Of Hypothetical Exported Proteins From Community Associated Staphylococcus Aureus, Haninder Kaur Jan 2012

Cloning And Characterization Of Hypothetical Exported Proteins From Community Associated Staphylococcus Aureus, Haninder Kaur

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a major cause of nosocomial infections, has acquired resistance to beta-lactam and other antibiotics. Recently, community associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) has developed independent of hospital associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). One of the major differences between the hospital and community strains is that the former is multi-resistant to antibiotics while the latter is not as resistant but is significantly more invasive. This increased invasiveness and the ability to cause life-threatening infections, even in immunocompetent individuals, makes CA-MRSA critically important as a public health problem. CA-MRSA is known to cause skin and soft tissue infections; bacteria interact with host …

Holocene Landscape Evolution Of The Ohio River Valley From Knob Creek To Rosewood Bottom, Rego Kathryn De

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rivers and floodplain environments have provided human settlements with resources for thousands of years. By understanding how rivers shape the land around them, we can use landforms to reconstruct ancient fluvial processes and to examine how they have conditioned the way humans interact with their environment. This study investigates the Lower Ohio River during the Holocene. During this period, Midwestern landscapes were adjusting to a variety of processes, including millennial-scale climate change involving the transition from a glacial to an interglacial environment. At the same time, Archaic hunter-gatherers adopted a settlement strategy that favored large river valleys. The cause of …
