Cdm Potential In Palm Solid Waste Cogeneration As An Alternative Energy In Aceh Province, Mahidin Mahidin, Izarul Machdar, Muhammad Faisal, Muhammad Nizar

Makara Journal of Technology

Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) as a solid waste in Crude Palm Oil (CPO) industry does not utilized yet as an alternative energy source to generate electricity. It is well known that use of solid wate (biomass) as an energy source is part of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme due to direct reduction of Green House Gases (GHGs) emission and provide a direct contribution to sustainable development. Utilization of EFB as a source of energy is very potential to be implemented in Aceh since this province has 25 CPO Mills at the moment which actively produce about 870,000 ton EFB …

Small Scale Experiment: Thermal Performance Comparison Between Fiber-Cement Roof And Photovoltaic Roof In Malang, Indonesia, Nurhamdoko Bonifacius, Sri Nastiti Nugrahani Ekasiwi Nov 2012

Small Scale Experiment: Thermal Performance Comparison Between Fiber-Cement Roof And Photovoltaic Roof In Malang, Indonesia, Nurhamdoko Bonifacius, Sri Nastiti Nugrahani Ekasiwi

Makara Journal of Technology

Irradiation on the surface of photovoltaic module heats up the photovoltaic module itself and the room underneath the roof of integrated photovoltaic building in the tropics area. Room heating reduces thermal condition and photovoltaic module surface heating reduces its performance in generating electricity. This paper discusses an experiment of measuring the surface temperature of photovoltaic modules and fiber-cement roof surface as a comparison. This experiment also measures the impact of rising temperatures in each space underneath. It used small-scale mock-ups exposed to direct sunlight. The result of the experiment shows that photovoltaic roof surface temperature is lower than fiber-cement roof …

Joint Source-Channel Coding For A Quantum Multiple Access Channel, Mark M. Wilde, Ivan Savov Nov 2012

Joint Source-Channel Coding For A Quantum Multiple Access Channel, Mark M. Wilde, Ivan Savov

Faculty Publications

Suppose that two senders each obtain one share of the output of a classical, bivariate, correlated information source. They would like to transmit the correlated source to a receiver using a quantum multiple access channel. In prior work, Cover, El Gamal and Salehi provided a combined source-channel coding strategy for a classical multiple access channel which outperforms the simpler separation strategy where separate codebooks are used for the source coding and the channel coding tasks. In this paper, we prove that a coding strategy similar to the Cover-El Gamal-Salehi strategy and a corresponding quantum simultaneous decoder allow for the reliable …

Role Of The Fermi-Surface Anisotropy In Angle-Dependent Magnetic-Field Oscillations For Identifying The Energy-Gap Anisotropy Of A Yfe 2se 2 Superconductors, Tanmoy Das, Anton B. Vorontsov, Ilya Vekhter, Matthias J. Graf Nov 2012

Role Of The Fermi-Surface Anisotropy In Angle-Dependent Magnetic-Field Oscillations For Identifying The Energy-Gap Anisotropy Of A Yfe 2se 2 Superconductors, Tanmoy Das, Anton B. Vorontsov, Ilya Vekhter, Matthias J. Graf

Faculty Publications

We present a numerical study of the field-angle resolved oscillations of the thermal conductivity and specific heat under a rotated magnetic field in the A yFe 2-xSe 2 [A=K, Rb, Cs, (Tl, K)] superconductors, using realistic two-band Fermi surface parametrization. Our key finding is that even for isotropic pairing on an anisotropic Fermi surface, the thermodynamic quantities exhibit substantial oscillatory behavior in the superconducting state, even much below the upper critical field. Furthermore, in multiband systems the competition of anisotropies between two Fermi surfaces can cause a double sign reversal of oscillations as a function of temperature, irrespective of gap …

Regulation Of Sensory Neurogenesis In The Trigeminal Placode: Notch Pathway Genes, Pax3 Isoforms, And Wnt Ligands, Jason Samuel Adams Nov 2012

Regulation Of Sensory Neurogenesis In The Trigeminal Placode: Notch Pathway Genes, Pax3 Isoforms, And Wnt Ligands, Jason Samuel Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is divided into three chapters, each discussing the study of different regulatory molecules involved in sensory neurogenesis occurring in the trigeminal placode. Chapter one is a spatiotemporal description of Notch pathway genes in chick opV placode by stage-specific expression analysis, showing expression of many Notch pathway genes and effectors in the opV placode. Notch pathway gene expression is primarily confined to the ectoderm with highest expression of these genes at the beginning stages of peak neuronal differentiation. This information preceded studies of the functional roles that Notch signaling has in the opV placode and how it may affect …

The Use Of Indicators For Unobservable Product Qualities: Inferences Based On Consumer Sorting, Matthew G. Nagler, Fredi Kronenberg, Edward J. Kennelly, Bei Jiang, Chunhui Ma Nov 2012

The Use Of Indicators For Unobservable Product Qualities: Inferences Based On Consumer Sorting, Matthew G. Nagler, Fredi Kronenberg, Edward J. Kennelly, Bei Jiang, Chunhui Ma

Publications and Research

We propose a method for measuring the conjectural errors that inexpert consumers make relative to experts in using observable product characteristics as surrogate indicators of a valued unobservable characteristic. Observations on the unobservable characteristic, available to the researcher but not consumers, are used to divide the data into high- and low-quality subsamples. Separate hedonic estimation on the subsamples enables measurement of the relative valuations and conjectures of experts and non-experts with respect to indicators under the assumption that consumers sort across quality grades based on their appraisal expertise. The method is demonstrated using a small sample of SKU-level data on …

Objections To Taxing Resale Of Residential Property Under A Vat, Wei Cui Nov 2012

Objections To Taxing Resale Of Residential Property Under A Vat, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

The “pre-collection” of tax on imputed consumption generated by owner-occupied housing plays a crucial role in both consumption tax theory and real-world tax regimes. However, even under current VAT systems with the widest tax bases, the taxation of imputed housing consumption is incomplete because pre-existing housing stock is typically not taxed when the VAT is introduced, and because housing value may appreciate after initial sale. In response, some have recommended taxing residential re-sale to capture previously untaxed consumption value. This paper argues that because the incidence of any properly-designed tax on resale will fall only on economic rent and existing …

Observation Of Center Disaster Damage On Pariaman And Wasior Using Differential Sar Interferometry (Dinsar), Dodi Sudiana, Mia Rizkinia

Makara Journal of Technology

This study focuses on disaster observations in Pariaman (West Sumatera) and Wasior (Papua) using remote sensing techniques (differential SAR interferometry). Differential interferometry (DInSAR) method was performed on two PALSAR data sets with different acquisition months, i.e. about a month after and before disaster, respectively. The center damage of Pariaman earthquake and Wasior flood can be determined by deriving Land Subsidence using DInSAR method.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Research is subsisting and necessary part of modern university, therefore the significance of publication in the growth and development of the library profession cannot be overestimated. This study focused on the effects of self-concept, knowledge sharing and utilization on research productivity of librarians in public university in South-West Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted; a total of one hundred and seven-four (174) respondents were selected for the study and 134 copies of the questionnaires were returned and virtually used for the study. The result showed that the level of publication of librarians is moderately high. There was relative effects of …

Renewing The Deweyan Response To Russellian Criticism, John M. Novak Nov 2012

Renewing The Deweyan Response To Russellian Criticism, John M. Novak

Education and Culture

Bertrand Russell was an interesting and, at times, delightfully insightful thinker who lived a colourful life and fought for many important causes. Certainly he was, and still is, an inspiring figure for some philosophers, humanists, social activists, and educators. Unfortunately, on several occasions, he demonstrated only a limited understanding of the depth, complexity, and subtlety of John Dewey's pragmatic project for philosophy, education, and society. Doubly unfortunate, the Russellian critique of John Dewey articulated by Michael Rockier carries on this misinformed tradition. Thus, I contend, the Russellian criticisms offered by Rockier are at best superficial, at worst seriously misleading.

Reflection-In-Action And Reflection-On-Action, Hugh Munby

Education and Culture

Since the publication of Schon's (1983) book on the character and development of professional knowledge, our research has been directed at applying his theoretical position to the problem of how teachers acquire the knowledge of practice that allows them to teach as they do. Briefly, we have attempted to understand what lies behind the apparently simple notion that teachers learn to teach by teaching, by examining how teachers interact with their experiences in order to learn from them. This paper does not dwell on the results of our qualitative case studies of 13 participating teachers; these are reported elsewhere (Russell, …
