An Examination Through An Ecological Lenses Of The Relationships Among Stressors, Protective Factors, And Psychological Outcomes In The Lives Of Urban Adolescents, Megha Tailor
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Many urban youth are exposed to substantial rates of stressors within different levels of their environment which increases their likelihood for experiencing negative mental health outcomes. Some emerging research suggests that traditional individually-based and family-based protective factors have a limited role in protecting urban youth facing community-based stressors. This study examined whether community-based protective factors moderated the relationship between community-based stressors and psychological symptoms in a sample of 384 urban youth recruited from three schools in the Midwest region. Some support for hypothesis I was found. In particular, community-based protective factor (i.e. religion) was found to lessen the impact of …

Gender, Country And Community: Exploring Safety, Trust And Empowerment Among Immigrant Survivors Of Torture., Nancy Bothne
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the community lives of immigrant survivors of torture living in theUnited States. The experiences of survivors in their countries of origin and theUnited Statesare examined by gender. This qualitative study relied on interviews with 16 survivors from multiple countries. The participation of a dissertation advisory group contributed to the study’s integrity, as did collaboration with community partners including a torture survivor advocacy group. The study found that the psychological elements of safety, trust and empowerment are important to both women and men. The lack of empowerment of people to counter claims of their government motivated these participants …

The Metallicity Of The Cm Draconis System, Ryan C. Terrien, Scott W. Fleming, Suvrath Mahadevan, Rohit Deshpande, Gregory A. Feiden
Dartmouth Scholarship
The CM Draconis system comprises two eclipsing mid-M dwarfs of nearly equal mass in a 1.27-day orbit. This well-studied eclipsing binary has often been used for benchmark tests of stellar models, since its components are amongst the lowest mass stars with well-measured masses and radii (~ 1% relative precision). However, as with many other low-mass stars, non-magnetic models have been unable to match the observed radii and effective temperatures for CM Dra at the 5-10% level. To date, the uncertain metallicity of the system has complicated comparison of theoretical isochrones with observations. In this Letter, we use data from the …

Extensive Gingival Enlargement In Siblings : A Case Report, Kumar Pushpanshu, Rachna Kaushik, Rs Athawale, Ravi P.
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Gingival fibromatosis is characterised by varying degrees of fibrotic gingival overgrowth that can be caused by a variety of aetiological factors. Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare genetic disorder, characterised by a slowly progressive, benign enlargement of keratinised gingiva. The condition may be found in an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, the former being more common. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can be one feature of a multisystem syndrome. Accordingly, HGF has been divided into two forms: non-syndromic and syndromic. The gingival enlargement can be localised or generalised, but usually involves both arches. …

Marfan Syndrome : Correct Diagnosis Can Save Lives, Nafisa Samir, Wafa Al-Fannah, Thord Al-Mahrezi, Abdulaziz
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Marfan syndrome is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue that affects many systems of the body. However, the most serious complication in patients with Marfan syndrome is progressive enlargement of the aortic root, which may lead to aortic dissection, rupture, or aortic regurgitation. Prevention of these life threatening complications is very important in the management of this condition. A 39-year-old Omani man presented with progressive shortness of breath and eventually underwent major but successful cardiac surgery. It is very important to recognise Marfan syndrome early as preventive actions are possible if the condition is diagnosed before complications occur.

The Use Of Icts And Audiovisual Resources In Developing Children’S Reading Habits In Nigeria, Uzoamaka Igwesi, J.N. Chimah, V. N. Nwachukwu
The Use Of Icts And Audiovisual Resources In Developing Children’S Reading Habits In Nigeria, Uzoamaka Igwesi, J.N. Chimah, V. N. Nwachukwu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper looks at the use of of Information and Communication Technologies, (ICTs), and audio-visual resources in developing children’s reading culture in Nigeria. It has been observed that most children in Nigeria have very poor reading culture as reading is not associated with pleasure. Developing reading culture in children has been identified as the foundation and the building block for life-long learning. This paper therefore tries to highlight the use of ICTs and audio-visual resources as veritable resources in associating reading with pleasure by encouraging children in learning how to learn, visual literacy, and associating reading with pleasure. The central …
The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
The Artiodactyl Index At The Origins Of Agriculture In The Northern U.S. Southwest, Cerisa R. Reynolds
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
People have long argued about the origins of agriculture in the northern U.S. Southwest. While the roles that maize and other plant foods played in early agricultural (Basketmaker II) communities have been frequently investigated, the utilization of faunal resources during this time has not been as thoroughly studied. This issue will be addressed by presenting the results of zooarchaeological analysis conducted on a sample of faunal remains from the Darkmold site, a Basketmaker II site near Durango, Colorado. Using the Artiodactyl Index, these resuls will be compared to sixteen other Basketmaker II sites and will show that the Durango Basketmakers …
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Did the emergence of social complexity in the Gulf of Georgia, Northwest Coast affect the social learning contexts of technologies? Barbed bone and antler technologies were examined from a Darwinian perspective using Boyd and Richerson's (1985) dual inheritance approach in order to further understand their social learning context. Barbed point attributes were examined for prestige-based indirect (context) bias (Henrich and Henrich 2007), the adoption of cultural traits due to unrelated traits, such as status. The emergence of this form of transmission was expected to emerge with the Developed Northwest Coast pattern (Matson and Coupland 1995). Phylogenetic methods and cluster analyses …
Attentional Biases And Emotional Reactivity: Elucidating Causal Mechanisms And Understanding Individual Differences, Kimberly A. Arditte
Attentional Biases And Emotional Reactivity: Elucidating Causal Mechanisms And Understanding Individual Differences, Kimberly A. Arditte
Open Access Theses
Previous studies have proposed that biased attention for emotional stimuli is related to subsequent emotional responsivity and research has found that the preference, or bias, to attend to specific emotional stimuli is often associated with heightened, or attenuated, emotional reactivity. Yet, it remains unclear whether attention causally contributes to emotional responding. As such, recent research has begun to examine these relations by manipulating attentional biases with the use of attention training tasks. The current investigation looked to add to the extant body of literature by systematically examining the impact of two attention training paradigms (train towards negative stimuli and train …
