Examining The Effects Of Instructions And Overt Timing On Curriculum-Based Measures Of Reading, Colby Duncan Taylor Nov 2012

Examining The Effects Of Instructions And Overt Timing On Curriculum-Based Measures Of Reading, Colby Duncan Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this research was to examine whether variation in directions and timer visibility affected oral reading fluency on R-CBM probes. A sample of third-grade students (N = 72) was randomly assigned to four experimental directions conditions which emphasized participants doing their best, fastest, most accurate, or most expressive reading. Results from the 4 (experimental directions) X 2 (timer visibility) factorial ANOVAs revealed no significant differences across groups in the number of reading errors made (i.e., miscues), the number of words read correctly per minute, or in how expressively the participants read. Further, experimental conditions were not found to …

Fluid Flow Induced By Asymmetrically Driven Polymer Brushes In Nanoscale Channels, Ibrahim S. Souki Nov 2012

Fluid Flow Induced By Asymmetrically Driven Polymer Brushes In Nanoscale Channels, Ibrahim S. Souki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A Nano ElectroMechanical System (NEMS) is theoretically introduced, through a Dissipative Particle Dynamics simulation model, as a new and novel approach to the issue of nano-pumps. The design features a nanoscale planar slit pore filled with solvent and a grafted polymer brush on the inner face of the lower plane (substrate). The polymer brush is susceptible to the influence of an external driving field, with an intensity modulated by a three phase square wave. The brush couples to the external field directly through fundamental forces, while a secondary coupling transfers momentum to the solvent through hydrodynamic interactions. The result is …

The Effect Of Supplemental Pictorial Freehand Sketches On The Construction Of Cad Models, Maria Nizovtseva Nov 2012

The Effect Of Supplemental Pictorial Freehand Sketches On The Construction Of Cad Models, Maria Nizovtseva

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

This study explored the effect of pictorial freehand sketches on CAD model building for first and second year engineering students. Thirty one students from CGT 163 Graphical Communication and Spatial Analysis course at Purdue University completed the study. Subjects were divided into two groups, one of which was required to use pictorial freehand sketches in the visualization process while the other one was not. Subjects were provided real models of physical objects of different complexity and were asked to model a part that would fit in the original one to form a rectangular prism. Outcomes were then analyzed in terms …

Epid-Based Dose Verification For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Joseph Gardner Nov 2012

Epid-Based Dose Verification For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Joseph Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Dose verification is a critical component of adaptive radiotherapy, as it provides a measurement of treatment delivery success. Based on the measured outcome, the plan may be adapted to account for differences between the planned dose and the delivered dose. Although placement of an EPID behind the patient during treatment allows for exit dosimetry which may be used to reconstruct the delivered patient dose via backprojection of the fluence, there have not been any studies examining the basic assumption of backprojection-based dose verification: that deviations between the expected and delivered exit fluences are totally caused by errors in the delivered …

Positive Versus Negative Agents: The Effects Of Emotions On Learning, Carolyn Mcgregor Forsyth Nov 2012

Positive Versus Negative Agents: The Effects Of Emotions On Learning, Carolyn Mcgregor Forsyth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current study investigates the impact of affect, mood contagion, and linguistic alignment on learning during tutorial conversations between a human student and two artificial pedagogical agents. The study uses an Intelligent Tutoring System known as OperationARIES! to engage students in tutorial conversations with animated agents. In this investigation, 48 college students (N = 48) conversed with pedagogical agents as they displayed 3 different moods (i.e., positive, negative, and neutral) along with a control condition in a within-subjects design. Results indicate that the mood of the agent did not significantly impact student learning even though mood contagion did occur between …

Pharmacokinetics And Brain Uptake In The Rhesus Monkey Of A Fusion Protein Of Arylsulfatase A And A Monoclonal Antibody Against The Human Insulin Receptor, Ruben J. Boado, Jeff Zhiqiang Lu, Eric Ka-Wai Hui, Rachita K. Sumbria, William M. Pardridge Nov 2012

Pardridge

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a lysosomal storage disorder of the brain caused by mutations in the gene encoding the lysosomal sulfatase, arylsulfatase A (ASA). It is not possible to treat the brain in MLD with recombinant ASA, because the enzyme does not cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In the present investigation, a BBB-penetrating IgG-ASA fusion protein is engineered and expressed, where the ASA monomer is fused to the carboxyl terminus of each heavy chain of an engineered monoclonal antibody (MAb) against the human insulin receptor (HIR). The HIRMAb crosses the BBB via receptor-mediated transport on the endogenous BBB insulin receptor, …

Remarks, The Big Picture: Beyond Hot Spots & Crises In Our Interconnected World, Anne-Marie Slaughter Nov 2012

Remarks, The Big Picture: Beyond Hot Spots & Crises In Our Interconnected World, Anne-Marie Slaughter

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

The picture of foreign policy as seen by the United States has changed dramatically over the last few decades. The United States now faces a world far more interconnected and integrated than the foreign policy landscape of the Cold War and its immediate aftermath. Instead of one or two super power centers, the world today is made up of multiple global and regional power centers. This essay, transcribed and adapted from remarks given by Anne-Marie Slaughter on March 15, 2012, at the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, examines the shift to a multi-polar world of foreign …

A Performance Guide To The Multi-Movement Guitar Sonatas Of Fernando Sor And Mauro Giuliani, Rattanai Bampenyou Nov 2012

A Performance Guide To The Multi-Movement Guitar Sonatas Of Fernando Sor And Mauro Giuliani, Rattanai Bampenyou

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to thoroughly analyze and to create a performance guide of the multi-movement guitar sonatas by Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani. The works include Sonatas, Opp. 22 and 25 by Sor, and Sonata, Op. 15 by Giuliani. Although the composers are well known to the guitar community, the number of detailed studies of these work is still limited. The present essay is a result of the desire to study them. It contains a short history of the origin of the six-string guitar, the biographies of Sor and Giuliani, and also a brief review of selected …

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

People living with HIV (PLWH) who have positive tuberculin skin tests (TST) benefit from isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) whereas those testing TST-negative do not. Revised World Health Organization guidelines explicitly state that assessment of TST is not a requirement for initiation of IPT. However, it is not known what proportions of patients will benefit from IPT if implemented without targeting according to TST status. We therefore determined the proportions of PLWH who test TST-positive.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We systematically reviewed the literature published between January 1990 and February 2012 to determine the proportions of patients without active tuberculosis attending HIV …
