Water And Nutrient Uptake Of Deciduous And Evergreen Trees In A Dry Seasonal Forest: Interrelationship Between Root Structure And Leaf Phenology, Patrick Z. Ellsworth Dec 2012

Water And Nutrient Uptake Of Deciduous And Evergreen Trees In A Dry Seasonal Forest: Interrelationship Between Root Structure And Leaf Phenology, Patrick Z. Ellsworth

Open Access Dissertations

Dry seasonal ecosystems are defined by a pronounced and consistent dry season, which reduces water availability in the dry season. Plants must adapt to water limitation in the dry season and high water availability during the wet season. In addition, the soil is nutrient-poor with the majority of nutrients concentrated in shallow soil. Considering the temporal drying of these layers, nutrient availability is dependent on the climatic conditions that govern water availability in the shallow soil. In this dissertation I address differences in fine root density, water source use, and nutrient uptake between deciduous and evergreen species in a dry …

Understanding The Effect Of Atmosphere-Wave-Ocean Coupling On Tropical Cyclone Structure, Chia-Ying Lee Dec 2012

Understanding The Effect Of Atmosphere-Wave-Ocean Coupling On Tropical Cyclone Structure, Chia-Ying Lee

Open Access Dissertations

It is well-recognized that tropical cyclone (TC) intensity is strongly modulated by air-sea interactions. However, how and to what extent air-sea interactions affect TC structure remains an open question. The overall goal of this study is to better understand the physical processes of the atmosphere-wave-ocean couplings and their impact on TC structure. Because the boundary layer connects the air-sea interface to TC convection, it is also important to understand how the couplings modulate boundary layer structure. In this study, coupled atmosphere-(wave)-ocean models and observations from two field programs are used in this study: Coupled Boundary Air-Sea Transfer (CBLAST, 2003-04), and …

E-Learning Modules

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are increasingly prevalent in US hospitals. The pediatric hospitalist is often the primary provider of inpatient care for these patients. However, exposure to this patient population during training varies from provider to provider. No published educational curricula are specific to the inpatient care of this population. The purpose of this project is to build a multi-modal educational curriculum for providers with the overall goal of improving inpatient care for this at-risk population.

This curriculum is primarily composed of a series of topic-specific learning modules. Asynchronous learning modules, utilized appropriately, can augment learning by …

Biological Motion And Gender Recognition: Visual Fixation On The Inversion Effect, Andrey P. Borisyuk, Rachel J. Garland, Alysse M. Feldman, Abigail R. Marchese Dec 2012

Biological Motion And Gender Recognition: Visual Fixation On The Inversion Effect, Andrey P. Borisyuk, Rachel J. Garland, Alysse M. Feldman, Abigail R. Marchese

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Gender recognition of point-light animations replicated an inversion effect. Participants identified the gender of thirty-two (half upright and half inverted, half male and half female) moving point-light human figures. Male figures were more accurately recognized in upright animations whereas female figures were more accurately recognized in inverted animations. Eye gaze of both genders was identical in both the upright animations (predominantly waist and shoulders) and inverted animations (predominantly waist but more distributed across body parts).

A Behavioral Analysis Of Counselor Supervision: A Multiple Baseline Design, Deirdre J. Walker Dec 2012

A Behavioral Analysis Of Counselor Supervision: A Multiple Baseline Design, Deirdre J. Walker

Dissertations

This paper consists of a concurrent multiple baseline across participants study that measured the effects of behavior analytic techniques to teach three counselor trainees basic counseling skills. The literature surrounding the development of basic counseling skills is reviewed in addition to the use of single case designs in counseling and counselor supervision. The literature surrounding combining behavior analysis and counseling research methodologies is also examined. Results indicated that a behavior analytic approach to basic skills training was an effective means for increasing targeted basic counseling skills. The supervisory working alliance between the principal investigator and all participants was measured and …

Process Construct In The Virtual R&D Teams, N. Ale Ebrahim, S. Ahmed, S.H. Abdul Rashid, Z. Taha, M. Mohammadjafari Dec 2012

Process Construct In The Virtual R&D Teams, N. Ale Ebrahim, S. Ahmed, S.H. Abdul Rashid, Z. Taha, M. Mohammadjafari

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

literature proves the importance of the process role in the effectiveness of virtual research and development (R&D) teams for new product development (NPD). However, the factors that make process construct in a virtual R&D team are still unclear. The manager of virtual R&D teams for NPD does not know which items of process should be used. To address the gap and answer the question, the study presents a set of factors that make a process construct. The proposed construct modified by finding of the field survey. We empirically examine the relationship between construct, dimensions and its factors by employing the …

Block-Scoped Access Restriction Technique For Html Content In Web Browsers, Timothy Watt Dec 2012

Block-Scoped Access Restriction Technique For Html Content In Web Browsers, Timothy Watt

Theses

Web sites, web browsers, web site authors, web component authors, and end users interact in a complicated environment with many recognized and unrecognized trust relationships. The web browser is the arena in which many important trust relationships interact, thus it bears a considerable burden in protecting the interests and security of web end users as well as web site authors. Existing proposals, draft standards, implemented features, and web application techniques go a long way towards allowing rich and compelling content interactions, but they do not provide for rich, mutually-distrusting content to be safely embedded in a single page. This proposal …

An Information Security Awareness Capability Model (Isacm), Robert Poepjes, Michael Lane Dec 2012

An Information Security Awareness Capability Model (Isacm), Robert Poepjes, Michael Lane

Australian Information Security Management Conference

A lack of information security awareness within some parts of society as well as some organisations continues to exist today. Whilst we have emerged from the threats of late 1990s of viruses such as Code Red and Melissa, through to the phishing emails of the mid 2000’s and the financial damage some such as the Nigerian scam caused, we continue to react poorly to new threats such as demanding money via SMS with a promise of death to those who won’t pay. So is this lack of awareness translating into problems within the workforce? There is often a lack of …

Human-Readable Real-Time Classifications Of Malicious Executables, Anselm Teh, Arran Stewart Dec 2012

Human-Readable Real-Time Classifications Of Malicious Executables, Anselm Teh, Arran Stewart

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Shafiq et al. (2009a) propose a non–signature-based technique for detecting malware which applies data mining techniques to features extracted from executable files. Their technique has a high level of accuracy, a low false positive rate, and a speed on par with commercial anti-virus products. One portion of their technique uses a multi-layer perceptron as a classifier, which provides little insight into the reasons for classification. Our experience is that network security analysts prefer tools which provide human-comprehensible reasons for a classification, rather than operating as “black boxes”. We therefore build on the results of Shafiq et al. by demonstrating a …

Implementing A Secure Academic Grid System - A Malaysian Case, Mohd Samsu Sajat, Suhaidi Hassan, Adi Affandi Ahmad, Ali Yusny Daud, Amran Ahmad Dec 2012

Implementing A Secure Academic Grid System - A Malaysian Case, Mohd Samsu Sajat, Suhaidi Hassan, Adi Affandi Ahmad, Ali Yusny Daud, Amran Ahmad

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Computational grids have become very popular in the recent times due to their capabilities and flexibility in handling large computationally intensive jobs. When it comes to the implementation of practical grid systems, security plays a major role due to the confidentiality of the information handled and the nature of the resources employed. Also due to the complex nature of the grid operations, grid systems face unique security threats compared to other distributed systems. This paper describes how to implement a secure grid system with special emphasis on the steps to be followed in obtaining, implementing and testing PKI certificates.
