Linguistics Improvements And Correlates In A Japanese Study Abroad Program, Geoffrey Scott Biesinger
Linguistics Improvements And Correlates In A Japanese Study Abroad Program, Geoffrey Scott Biesinger
Theses and Dissertations
Study abroad (SA) is typically thought to provide an excellent opportunity for second language acquisition, particularly through exposure to and application of the target language within the target culture. However, actual language gains vary greatly among SA participants and some may gain very little (Freed, 1995a). The purpose of the current study is to determine some specific linguistic gains made by 28 second language learners of Japanese studying for two semesters in Japan, and to determine possible correlates with these gains. Specifically, it addresses whether or not these SA students improve their grammatical proficiency, lexical proficiency, narrative ability, fluency, and …

Towards On-Line Voltage Stability Assessment Using Synchrophasors, Himanshu S. Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Towards On-Line Voltage Stability Assessment Using Synchrophasors, Himanshu S. Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Advances in technology has made possible the online monitoring and assessment of voltage stability. Synchrophasors measure voltage and current phasors with accurate time stamping with respect to Global Positioning System (GPS) clock reference. a novel voltage stability prediction algorithm using synchrophasors is proposed. Synchrophasor data is used to perform a fast state estimation of the system. This is a departure from conventional SCADA-Based state estimation. the traditional method of VQ analysis for voltage stability is put to use in this algorithm to estimate the voltage stability margin. Since the data refresh rate is faster with synchrophasor data than SCADA-Based data, …

Microgrids - A Review Of Modeling, Control, Protection, Simulation And Future Potential, Shyam Naren Bhaskara, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Results of a literature survey done on microgrids from conception to installation is presented. the purpose is to evaluate the current status, major obstacles and existing research efforts directed toward establishing functional microgrids within utility systems. This review paper covers technical issues associated with frequency control and re-synchronization associated with typical distributed energy sources. Also evaluated are regulatory and policy issues associated with ownership, maintenance, availability, coordinated equipment control, obligation to provide adequate power quality, etc. associated with operating an islanded microgrid within a utility company's service territory. Actual microgrids in operation today are described. Benchmark test systems for steady …

Symbolic Model-Checking Of Stateful Timed Csp Using Bdd And Digitization, Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stateful Timed CSP has been recently proposed to model (and verify) hierarchical real-time systems. It is an expressive modeling language which combines data structure/operations, complicated control flows (modeled using compositional process operators adopted from Timed CSP), and real-time requirements like deadline and within. It has been shown that Stateful Timed CSP is equivalent to closed timed automata with silent transitions, which implies that the timing constraints of Stateful Timed CSP can be captured using explicit tick events, through digitization. In order to tackle the state space explosion problem, we develop a BDD-based symbolic model checking approach to verify Stateful Timed …

Characterization Of The Red Bluff Landslide, Greater Cascade Landslide Complex, Columbia River Gorge, Washington, James Robert Randall
Characterization Of The Red Bluff Landslide, Greater Cascade Landslide Complex, Columbia River Gorge, Washington, James Robert Randall
Dissertations and Theses
Located in the Columbia River Gorge, The Red Bluff Landslide (18.8 km2) is one of four large landslides that make up the Cascade Landslide Complex. In its current form, the Red Bluff Landslide is a post-Missoula Flood feature made up of two components: an active upper lobe (8.6 km2) that is translational, creeping to the south at 25 cm/yr and spreading laterally to the east at 6 cm/yr over a semi-fixed portion (10.2 km2) of the Red Bluff Landslide area that has been "smoothed" by Missoula Floods. The upper active lobe is the landslide debris accumulated since Missoula Flood time …

Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In The Philippines = 菲律宾土地改革与农村重建, Isagani R. Serrano
Agrarian Reform And Rural Reconstruction In The Philippines = 菲律宾土地改革与农村重建, Isagani R. Serrano
South South Forum 南南論壇
Agrarian reform is at the heart of rural reconstruction and both are essential to achieving sustainable development. It includes not only land redistribution but also empowerment of peasants as key actors in building the rural economy. Land is not only an asset to be owned and accessed but also as a natural resource with multiple uses for both economic development and protection of ecosystems. Land ownership has hitherto been a centerpiece question in Philippine development, indeed, in nation building. Land monopoly on one side and landlessness on the other have defined to a large extent the history and political economy …
Principles For Accountable Leadership — The Aa1000 Series, Daniel Waistell
Principles For Accountable Leadership — The Aa1000 Series, Daniel Waistell
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Author Daniel Waistell, Standards Manager of London-based AccountAbility, has provided the most recent benchmarks of identifying stakeholders for businesses to pursue greater sustainability in their respective operations. These standards are often coupled with world protocol reporting guidelines, including Global Reporting Initiative headquartered in Amsterdam (a United Nations-based program voluntarily used by the majority of Fortune 1000 companies as well as myriad small and medium enterprises). Waistell demonstrates the need for more transparency in business operations and reporting activities to achieve greater accountability for a wider array of non-traditional stakeholders.
Workplace Bullying And Ethical Leadership, David Yamada
Workplace Bullying And Ethical Leadership, David Yamada
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
In order to increase business productivity, benefit packages and other financial incentives might not be adequate. Rather, the focus upon common respect for — and decent treatment of — all workers is discussed, with primary emphasis given to the endemic workplace problem of worker harassment. Simple courtesies, genuine team and individual service acknowledgement, and the dismantling of a counterproductive, hierarchical worker system, often lead to increased productivity, congenial relationships, and a happier and healthier worker.

Capitalism Revisited: The Interplay Of Motivation, Inspiration And Risk, Duncan Goose
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Business leaders who have effectively communicated their values by undertaking substantial philanthropic endeavors made fiscally possible through their own business successes, labors and investments, appear to all share a common thread. Influential social, environmental, work and religious backgrounds are studied and “epiphanal” experiences explored.

Dynamic Leadership: Toolbox For The Values-Based Entrepreneur, Chun Guo, Sinéad G. Ruane, Alexandra Galli-Debicella, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Charles C. Manz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Four entrepreneurship models are proposed which lend guidance in the development of a business, from birth to exit, each examining ways to maintain the business founder’s initial vision and to continue to infuse values and ethical decision-making at each stage of development.
The Making Of A “Philanthropreneur” (Interview With Trevor Field And Mark Melman, Playpumps International)
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
“Be mindful of taking care of yourself without excesses.” In the case of Playpumps® International, an NGO based in Johannesburg, South Africa, coupling a not-for-profit with a for-profit company produced the needed incentive to bear truth to the idiom that one person, one simple idea can really change the world. Trevor Field and his partner, Mark Melman, former executives in the outdoor advertising industry, have done just that. With the invention of the PlayPump® water system, government agencies, NGOs and for-profit business have converged to address the disturbing reality that over one billion people lack access to clean water. According …

The Energy Sector In Mediterranean And Mena Countries, Marcella Nicolini, Simona Porcheri
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper describes the energy sector in the Mediterranean and MENA (Middle East and North Africa) countries. It first analyses the production of energy by fossil and renewable sources and discusses the increasing demand in the area and its consequences. It describes the policy frameworks to promote renewable energy as well as fossil-fuel subsidies, which are still abundant in the MENA area. It presents some avenues for integration across the Mediterranean and finally it discusses the implications of the Arab spring on energy production in the next future.

Walmart's Sustainability Journey: Defining Sustainable Products (B), David G. Hyatt, Andrew Spicer
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
In “Defining Sustainable Products (A),” we examine Walmart’s search for a systemic solution to define a sustainable product precisely. In this case, Matt Kistler, who succeeded Andy Ruben as the company sustainability leader in 2007, knows that the company is lagging behind on its espoused goal of selling sustainable products. The case asks students step into Kistler’s shoes as he leads Walmart’s sustainability office through a systematic review of the different models and frameworks available for measuring the sustainability of products presently in use. Eventually, the students face a decision about what Walmart should do to make systemic progress with …

Walmart's Sustainability Journey: Lee Scott's Founding Vision, Andrew Spicer, Laura Lambdin
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
The first case—“Lee Scott’s Founding Vision”—takes the perspective from the apex of the organization as Walmart’s CEO, Lee Scott, develops and articulates his vision of what Walmart hopes to achieve by pursuing an aggressive sustainability strategy. This case explores the pressures that led Scott to announce the company’s ambitious sustainability goals: achieving zero waste, 100% renewable energy, and selling sustainable products. It also explores the choices made when defining and communicating the scope of the strategy, particularly through an in-depth analysis of his announcement of Walmart’s new goals in his October 2005, “Twenty-First Century Leadership” speech.
