Principals' Knowledge Of Special Education Policies And Procedures, Lindsay. Jesteadt Jan 2012

Principals' Knowledge Of Special Education Policies And Procedures, Lindsay. Jesteadt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research has shown that most school leaders lack the knowledge necessary to deal with the many different aspects and issues that special education programs encompass. This lack of knowledge ultimately places special education teachers, programs, and students with disabilities at a clear disadvantage. With The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 and the reauthorization of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) in 2004, schools and school leaders are being held accountable for the learning gains of all students, including students with disabilities. This study sought to assess the knowledge of Florida school principals in the area …

Preliminary Typology Of Aztec Formal Chipped Stone Tools, Timothy J. Guyah Jan 2012

Preliminary Typology Of Aztec Formal Chipped Stone Tools, Timothy J. Guyah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This preliminary typology of Aztec formal chipped stone tools was created taking into account the context in which the lithics were recovered, their morphology, and manufacturing processes. The typology defines six categories of stone tools: ornately decorated bifaces (this includes ceremonial lithic artifacts), projectile points, scrapers, perforators, denticulates, and other. The thesis also includes an analysis of 10 previously unanalyzed Aztec lithic assemblages. When taken together the typology and lithic analysis provide a summary description of the Aztec lithic industry.

Race And Representation In Friday Night Lights, Keisha. Johnson Jan 2012

Race And Representation In Friday Night Lights, Keisha. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis will highlight the significance and representation of race in the film and television show Friday Night Lights. The core claim of my thesis will show that representation of race was different in the film as compared to the television show due to their various settings, one historical (1980s) and the other contemporary (2000s). While both the film and the television show were produced in the 2000s, their use of two different historical periods allows for contrasting representations of race even they both draw from the book Friday Night Lights. The film's representation of race is reflective of its …

Public Speaking As The Last Battlefield, Shaundi C. Newbolt Jan 2012

Public Speaking As The Last Battlefield, Shaundi C. Newbolt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Communication scholars are in disagreement over the presence of online public speaking courses in higher education. Despite limited research on the Online Public Speaking model, it is quickly replacing the traditional public speaking model in American colleges and universities. This study used Burkean Cluster-Agon Analysis to uncover core concepts from four contemporary public speaking textbooks used in various classroom models (traditional, online and hybrid). Concepts were then compared with traditional core concepts of early speech communication to determine if technology has influenced contemporary core concepts. Results determined that contemporary core concepts from three of the four public speaking textbooks reflected …

Relativistic Causal Ordering A Memory Model For Scalable Concurrent Data Structures, Josh Triplett Jan 2012

Relativistic Causal Ordering A Memory Model For Scalable Concurrent Data Structures, Josh Triplett

Dissertations and Theses

High-performance programs and systems require concurrency to take full advantage of available hardware. However, the available concurrent programming models force a difficult choice, between simple models such as mutual exclusion that produce little to no concurrency, or complex models such as Read-Copy Update that can scale to all available resources. Simple concurrent programming models enforce atomicity and causality, and this enforcement limits concurrency. Scalable concurrent programming models expose the weakly ordered hardware memory model, requiring careful and explicit enforcement of causality to preserve correctness, as demonstrated in this dissertation through the manual construction of a scalable hash-table item-move algorithm. Recent …

Supranationalism In The Fight Against Transnational Threats: A Comparative Study Of Asean And Eu Policy Responses To Human Trafficking, Nicholas M. Klynn Jan 2012

Supranationalism In The Fight Against Transnational Threats: A Comparative Study Of Asean And Eu Policy Responses To Human Trafficking, Nicholas M. Klynn

Dissertations and Theses

Transnational security threats are among the most pressing and complicated problems facing both governmental and non-governmental actors in today's world. Human trafficking is one example of contemporary transnational security threat that is relatively less studied compared to other transnational security threats. Because transnational security threats such as human trafficking exist above and outside the boundaries of state control, it may be supposed that a greater degree of supranationalism in the policy responses to them would yield better results in combatting these modern-day ills. Anti-trafficking efforts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union are examined to assess …

Is Canada The New Shangri-La Of Global Securities Class Actions?, Tanya J. Monestier Jan 2012

Is Canada The New Shangri-La Of Global Securities Class Actions?, Tanya J. Monestier

Journal Articles

There has been significant academic buzz about Silver v. Imax, an Ontario case certifying a global class of shareholders alleging statutory and common law misrepresentation in connection with a secondary market distribution of shares. Although global class actions on a more limited scale have been certified in Canada prior to Imax, it can now be said that global classes have “officially” arrived in Canada. Many predict that the Imax decision means that Ontario will become the new center for the resolution of global securities disputes. This is particularly so after the United States largely relinquished this role in Morrison v. …

The 2011 annual meeting of the Children's Tumor Foundation, the annual gathering of the neurofibromatosis (NF) research and clinical communities, was attended by 330 participants who discussed integration of new signaling pathways into NF research, the appreciation for NF mutations in sporadic cancers, and an expanding pre-clinical and clinical agenda. NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis collectively affect approximately 100,000 persons in US, and result from mutations in different genes. Benign tumors of NF1 (neurofibroma and optic pathway glioma) and NF2 (schwannoma, ependymoma, and meningioma) and schwannomatosis (schwannoma) can cause significant morbidity, and there are no proven drug treatments for any form …

Designing Wise Communities That Engage In Creative Problem Solving: An Analysis Of An Online Design Model, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Ludmila Layne, Casey Frechette

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Addressing the conference theme of “design thinking,” this paper discusses an instructional design model, WisCom (Wisdom Communities) that we developed to build a wise learning community online, to solve open-ended, ill-structured problems such as solving a health crisis or an environmental disaster, which requires the exchange of multiple perspectives, inter-disciplinary thinking, creative problem solving, and social construction of knowledge. Based on socio-constructivist, sociocultural theories of learning and mediated cognition (Vygotsky, 1978), distributed cognition (Hutchins, 1995; Pea, 1993), group cognition (Stahl, 2006), research on how people learn (Bransford, Vye, Bateman, Brophy, & Roselli, 2004), and distance education design principles (Moore & …

Forced Options : Faculty Identity Development And Institutional Culture, Eileen Kogl Camfield Jan 2012

Forced Options : Faculty Identity Development And Institutional Culture, Eileen Kogl Camfield

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many faculty enter the professoriate with high ideals. They have identity conceptions of themselves as potential change-agents, expanding human knowledge and contributing to the greater good. Over time, for many, this idealism fades and is replaced with job dissatisfaction and bitterness. This study uses intersectionality as a theoretical frame to explore faculty identity development by examining the ways academic socialization into a competitive, hierarchical system privileges certain aspects of an individual's identity while imperiling others. In presenting data based on hour-long qualitative interviews with six mid-career university faculty members in the social sciences or humanities, the specific mechanisms that trigger …

Transitional Care-Apn Guided Care Coordination, Karen P. Shields Jan 2012

Transitional Care-Apn Guided Care Coordination, Karen P. Shields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is an epidemic with estimated direct and indirect costs to the United States for 2008 of 34.8 billion (AHA, 2008). CHF is the only cardiovascular disease whose incidence is increasing (Williams, 2009). The most significant factor contributing to the increased incidence of CHF is the increased elderly population. Based on the 44-year follow-up of the NHLBI’s Framingham Heart Study, eighty percent of men and 70 percent of women under age 65 who have CHF will die within eight years (Williams, 2009). As the population ages, the total number of Americans with chronic conditions will rise rapidly. …

The Effects Of A Walking Exercise Program On Glucose Control In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Judy R. Dasilva Jan 2012

The Effects Of A Walking Exercise Program On Glucose Control In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Judy R. Dasilva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Individuals with type 2 diabetes are often unaware that physical activity can improve glucose utilization and thereby decrease blood sugar. The author investigated a 16 week walking intervention on Type 2 diabetics and the impact this exercise has on HbA1c levels, weight loss and exercise levels. Two men and seven women (n = 9 ) participated in the program. Results indicated significance increase in physical activity levels (t = 11.08 p = .001) and increased weight loss ( t = 12.5 p = .001) but no significance difference for HbA1c ( t = 1.4 p=1.08). Implications include the benefits of …

Effects Of A Crisis Intervention Team (Cit) Training Program Upon Police Officers Before And After Crisis Intervention Team Training: An Evidenced Based Program Evaluation Project In Miami Dade County Florida, Horace Ellis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Throughout communities across the United States, police officers frequently come in contact with individuals who are experiencing an active state of mental health crisis and do not have the necessary skills to safely and effectively intervene. The deinstitutionalization of patients in American psychiatric hospitals began in the 1970s (Burris, 2004). This policy was meant to be a way to help re-integrate those chronically ill patients back into the community (Burris, 2004). The theory of deinstitutionalization consists of component processes: the release of persons residing in psychiatric hospitals to families and alternative living facilities in the community, the diversion of potential …

Dnp Role In Specialty Care: Starting An Autonomous Psychiatric Practice In Miami Using Electronic Health Record (Ehr) Technology, George V. Cioffi Jan 2012

Dnp Role In Specialty Care: Starting An Autonomous Psychiatric Practice In Miami Using Electronic Health Record (Ehr) Technology, George V. Cioffi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in the state of Florida face multiple barriers to practicing autonomously. The Nurse Practice Act in Florida requires a collaborative agreement with a Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or a Dentist in order for the APN to be able to practice. Collaborative agreements, often called protocols, require a fee to be paid to the collaborating physician. This increases the fixed costs of the practice and is a financial burden that is not experienced by similar practices in other states. The project explores challenges of starting an autonomous APN psychiatric practice in South Florida using Electronic …

Qualitative Inquiry Into Church-Based Assets For Hiv/Aids Prevention And Control: A Forum Focus Group Discussion Approach, Godwin N. Aja, Naomi N. Modeste, Susanne B. Montgomery

The Qualitative Report

Assets church members believed they needed to engage in effective HIV/AIDS prevention and control activities. We used the three-step forum focus group discussion (FFGD) methodology to elicit responses from 32 church leaders and lay members, representing five denominations in Aba, Nigeria. Concrete resources, health expertise, finances, institutional support, capacity building, and spiritual support connected to the collective interest of members were indicated as useful for church members to engage in HIV/AIDS prevention and control activities. Adequate planning and delivery of cost-effective, appropriate and sustainable health promotion programs require an understanding of perceived church-based assets.

An Exemplar For Teaching And Learning Qualitative Research, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Nancy L. Leech, John R. Slate, Marcella Stark, Bipin Sharma, Rebecca Frels, Kristin Harris, Julie P. Combs Jan 2012

An Exemplar For Teaching And Learning Qualitative Research, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Nancy L. Leech, John R. Slate, Marcella Stark, Bipin Sharma, Rebecca Frels, Kristin Harris, Julie P. Combs

The Qualitative Report

In this article, we outline a course wherein the instructors teach students how to conduct rigorous qualitative research. We discuss the four major distinct, but overlapping, phases of the course: conceptual/theoretical, technical, applied, and emergent scholar. Students write several qualitative reports, called qualitative notebooks, which involve data that they collect (via three different types of interviews), analyze (using nine qualitative analysis techniques via qualitative software), and interpret. Each notebook is edited by the instructors to help them improve the quality of subsequent notebook reports. Finally, we advocate asking students who have previously taken this course to team-teach future courses. We …

Conversing Life: An Autoethnographic Construction, Christopher N. Hoelson, Rod Burton Jan 2012

Conversing Life: An Autoethnographic Construction, Christopher N. Hoelson, Rod Burton

The Qualitative Report

This autoethnography is a constructed account of a co-exploration into the nature and effects of a longitudinal dyadic conversation process from a relational constructionist perspective. The conversations, between me as participant autoethnographer and a co-participant, aimed at maximising personal learning for both. Through co-created contexts of mutual engagement and respectful presence, we were able to focus our learning on the spontaneous process and content of the conversations. The qualitative data were sampled purposively from diary entries summarizing the conversations which spanned a period of five years. The data were analysed into themes and together, with selected illustrative examples of significant …

Building Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Networks: Reflections On Qualitative Research Group (Qrg) At The University Of Manitoba, Kerstin Stieber Roger, Gayle Halas Jan 2012

Building Interdisciplinary Qualitative Research Networks: Reflections On Qualitative Research Group (Qrg) At The University Of Manitoba, Kerstin Stieber Roger, Gayle Halas

The Qualitative Report

As qualitative research methodologies continue to evolve and develop, both students and experienced researchers are showing greater interest in learning about and developing new approaches. To meet this need, faculty at the University of Manitoba created the Qualitative Research Group (QRG), a community of practice that utilizes experiential learning in the context of social relationships to nurture social interaction, create opportunities to share knowledge, support knowledge creation, and build collaborations among all disciplines. While many other qualitative research networks such as the QRG may exist, little has been published on their early development or the activities that contribute to the …

Using Realist Synthesis To Develop An Evidence Base From An Identified Data Set On Enablers And Barriers For Alcohol And Drug Program Implementation, Barbara Hunter, Lynda Berends, Sarah Maclean Jan 2012

Using Realist Synthesis To Develop An Evidence Base From An Identified Data Set On Enablers And Barriers For Alcohol And Drug Program Implementation, Barbara Hunter, Lynda Berends, Sarah Maclean

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this paper is to show how “realist synthesis” methodology (Pawson, 2002) was adapted to review a large sample of community based projects addressing alcohol and drug use problems. Our study drew on a highly varied sample of 127 projects receiving funding from a national non-government organisation in Australia between 2002 and 2008. Open and pattern coding led to the identification of 10 barrier and nine enabler mechanisms influencing project implementation across the sample. Eight case studies (four demonstrating successful implementation; four demonstrating less than successful implementation) were used for depth exploration of these mechanisms. High level theories …

Conducting Qualitative Data Analysis: Reading Line-By-Line, But Analyzing By Meaningful Qualitative Units, Ronald J. Chenail Jan 2012

Conducting Qualitative Data Analysis: Reading Line-By-Line, But Analyzing By Meaningful Qualitative Units, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

In the first of a series of “how-to” essays on conducting qualitative data analysis, Ron Chenail points out the challenges of determining units to analyze qualitatively when dealing with text. He acknowledges that although we may read a document word-by-word or line-by-line, we need to adjust our focus when processing the text for purposes of conducting qualitative data analysis so we concentrate on meaningful, undivided entities or wholes as our units of analysis.

Manufacturing Change, Una Ruddock Jan 2012

Manufacturing Change, Una Ruddock

The Qualitative Report

This is a highly accessible presentation of organisational research, which demonstrates how ethnography can elicit a holistic understanding of across section of employees and thereby reveal a workplace culture. It suggests that change efforts fail if culture is ignored and offers a detailed account of how critical incidents translate into tools for change. The data analysis reveals the weakness in working relationships and how blame functions to prevent change. The Ideal Plant project emerges, which validates transformation tools to create cooperative workplace interactions and collaborative problem solving. The past and future, metaphorically represented as two different places, are connected by …

Member Checking: Can Benefits Be Gained Similar To Group Therapy?, Melissa Harper, Patricia Cole Jan 2012

Member Checking: Can Benefits Be Gained Similar To Group Therapy?, Melissa Harper, Patricia Cole

The Qualitative Report

Member checking continues to be an important quality control process in qualitative research as during the course of conducting a study, participants receive the opportunity to review their statements for accuracy and, in so doing; they may acquire a therapeutic benefit. The authors of this article suggest that this benefit is similar to some of the components of group therapy, especially in normalizing the phenomenon being experienced. Even if the participants never meet, they can feel a sense of relief that their feelings are validated and that they are not alone.

Bullying In Schools, Chantal M. Gagnon Jan 2012

Bullying In Schools, Chantal M. Gagnon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Peer aggression and bullying are significant problems for children in American schools. While a large body of research has been conducted in this area, none to date has examined the combined roles of temperament (behavioral activation system, or BAS, and behavioral inhibition system, or BIS), and empathy in predicting participation in bullying interactions. Previous research has found that low empathy facilitates aggressive behavior, while high empathy inhibits it, and has linked poor emotion regulation to conduct disorders. Thus, if these factors can predict behaviors towards peers, they may also predict (independently and in combination) involvement in bullying, specifically the roles …

Software Framework For Prognostic Health Monitoring Of Ocean-Based Power Generation, Mark. Bowren Jan 2012

Software Framework For Prognostic Health Monitoring Of Ocean-Based Power Generation, Mark. Bowren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

On August 5, 2010 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has designated the Center for Ocean Energy Technology (COET) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) as a national center for ocean energy research and development of prototypes for open-ocean power generation. Maintenance on ocean-based machinery can be very costly. To avoid unnecessary maintenance it is necessary to monitor the condition of each machine in order to predict problems. This kind of prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires a condition-based maintenance (CBM) system that supports diagnostic and prognostic analysis of large amounts of data. Research in this field led to the creation of …
