Knowing For: A New Path In Testimonial Justification, John Allan Scott Camacho Nov 2012

Knowing For: A New Path In Testimonial Justification, John Allan Scott Camacho

Theses

John Greco believes that any satisfactory theory of testimonial knowledge should explain its practical nature—how testimonial knowledge pervades across cases in a way that much of our knowledge is dependable. He offers six cases: children know from their mothers, teachers (simple), friends know from each other and citizens (tricky), job interviewers and interrogators know from interviewees (difficult). In §2, I consider Greco’s formulation of these cases into the Reasons and Trust (RT) Dilemma: reductionism is too demanding for simple cases and non-reductionism is too easy in difficult cases. In §3, I begin by reframing Greco’s RT Dilemma. I will argue …

Sex Differences In Normal Fetuses And Infants: A Commentary, David S. Moore Nov 2012

Sex Differences In Normal Fetuses And Infants: A Commentary, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Sex differences in infants warrant attention, not because they clarify the extent to which such differences reflect nature or nurture, but because studying them is likely to illuminate the origins of sex differences later in life and thereby yield manipulations that could influence the development of important competences. It is not yet clear how male and female infants come to differ. Testosterone is influential, but because of the complexity of the developmental systems in which it operates, its effects are not straightforward: Testosterone does different things in different contexts. Simple explanations invoking hormone exposure should not be expected to satisfactorily …

Ngos, Soft Power, And Environmental Politics, Benjamin James Chambers Nov 2012

Ngos, Soft Power, And Environmental Politics, Benjamin James Chambers

Theses

This paper explores the connection between NGOs and the growing international environmental regime. It questions the role these groups have played in building international law, arguing that they use soft power to overcome the interests of states in negotiations. After providing background on the idea of soft power, the paper uses three case studies to demonstrate the argument: the Rio Declaration, the Montreal Protocol, and the Kyoto Protocol. The findings from these studies challenge realism and support a constructivist analysis of international regime-building.

Optical-Based Sensors For Monitoring Corrosion Of Reinforcement Rebar Via An Etched Cladding Bragg Grating, Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, M.R. Abu Hassan, M.H. Abu Bakar, K.D. Dambul Nov 2012

Optical-Based Sensors For Monitoring Corrosion Of Reinforcement Rebar Via An Etched Cladding Bragg Grating, Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, M.R. Abu Hassan, M.H. Abu Bakar, K.D. Dambul

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this paper, we present the development and testing of an optical-based sensor for monitoring the corrosion of reinforcement rebar. The testing was carried out using an 80% etched-cladding Fibre Bragg grating sensor to monitor the production of corrosion waste in a localized region of the rebar. Progression of corrosion can be sensed by observing the reflected wavelength shift of the FBG sensor. With the presence of corrosion, the etched-FBG reflected spectrum was shifted by 1.0 nm. In addition, with an increase in fringe pattern and continuously, step-like drop in power of the Bragg reflected spectrum was also displayed.

Coarsely Crystalline Cryogenic Cave Carbonate – A New Archive To Estimate The Last Glacial Minimum Permafrost Depth In Central Europe, K. Žák, D. K. Richter, M. Filippi, R. Živor, M. Deininger, A. Mangini, D. Scholz

KIP Articles

Cryogenic cave carbonate (CCC) represents a specific type of speleothem whose precipitation is triggered by freezing of mineralized karst water. Coarsely crystalline CCC, which formed during slow freezing of water in cave pools, has been reported from 20 Central European caves located in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. All these caves are situated in an area which was glacier-free during the Weichselian. Whereas the formation of usual types of speleothems in caves of this region usually ceased during the glacials, coarsely crystalline CCC precipitation was restricted to glacial periods. Since this carbonate type represents a novel, useful paleoclimate …

Dialogue Between Israelis And Palestinians: Obsolete Approach Or Still Viable Technique In The Middle East Conflict Transformation Toolkit?, Laurie Millman Nov 2012

Dialogue Between Israelis And Palestinians: Obsolete Approach Or Still Viable Technique In The Middle East Conflict Transformation Toolkit?, Laurie Millman

Capstone Collection

During the last thirty years of the 20th century, there was a proliferation of dialogues between Palestinians and Israelis. Participants in early unofficial dialogues sometimes became negotiators for official dialogues, or articulated positions which were later presented in public Track II negotiations such as the Geneva Accords. Nevertheless, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has not been transformed, and seems more intractable now than in many years. Given the optimism, effort, and analysis which have been invested in dialogue, this paper considers the question of whether dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians represents an obsolete approach or a still valuable technique in the …

American Ways: A Course In Contemporary U.S. Culture For International Students, Christopher D. Fitch Nov 2012

American Ways: A Course In Contemporary U.S. Culture For International Students, Christopher D. Fitch

Capstone Collection

International student populations are increasing in large proportions at universities across the United States. The onset of culture shock and difficulty communicating and relating with their new peers compounds an already difficult situation. Universities and colleges need a method to accommodate these students and help facilitate their transitions into a completely new academic and social environment.

“American Ways: A course on Contemporary American Culture for International Students” is a semester-long university level course designed to give knowledge and understanding of “American” culture to international students attending U.S. higher education institutions. It will cover topics surrounding U.S. culture that …

Toward The Beginning Of Time: Circadian Rhythms In Metabolism Precede Rhythms In Clock Gene Expression In Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, Jiffin K. Paulose, Edmund B. Rucker Iii, Vincent M. Cassone Nov 2012

Toward The Beginning Of Time: Circadian Rhythms In Metabolism Precede Rhythms In Clock Gene Expression In Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, Jiffin K. Paulose, Edmund B. Rucker Iii, Vincent M. Cassone

Biology Faculty Publications

The appearance, progression, and potential role for circadian rhythms during early development have previously focused mainly on the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and peri- and postnatal expression of canonical clock genes. More recently, gene expression studies in embryonic stem cells have shown that some clock genes are expressed in undifferentiated cells; however rhythmicity was only established when cells are directed toward a neural fate. These studies also concluded that a functional clock is not present in ESCs, based solely on their gene expression. The null hypothesis underlying the present study is that embryonic stem cells become rhythmic in both clock gene …

Improving Student Learning: Examining The Teacher Knowing–Doing Gap, Gary S. Nunnally Nov 2012

Improving Student Learning: Examining The Teacher Knowing–Doing Gap, Gary S. Nunnally

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Research literature is full of research-based instructional strategies that highly effective teachers utilize on a consistent and systematic basis. And, it is well known that in multiple fields there exists a gap between what people know and what they actually do, commonly referred to as the knowing-doing gap. This study sought to examine whether this same gap exists in the field of education. In other words, this study sought to describe what high school mathematics, science, English, and social studies teachers know about effective instructional strategies and what they actually do in their classrooms.

The researcher reviewed studies, books, journal …
