Coös County Youth And Out-Of-School Activities - Patterns Of Involvement And Barriers To Participation, Erin H. Sharp

Carsey Publications

This fact sheet draws from surveys administered to a cohort of 416 participants in 7th grade in 2008, again when they were in 8th grade in 2009, and most recently as 10th graders in 2011 to look at patterns of participation in structured activities over time and whether male and female students differ in these patterns of participa¬tion. It also draws from questions added to the 2011 survey of 10th graders to examine Coös County youths’ perceptions about what kinds of barriers have kept them from getting more involved in structured out-of-school activities.

Author Erin Hiley Sharp reports that female …

Antiviral Activity Of Cyclopentene Nitro-Ester And Derivatives, Kirpal S. Bisht, Alberto Van Olphen, Pasha M. Khan, Cynthia Bucher

USF Patents

Disclosed is a method of synthesizing new optically pure heterocyclic compounds using Pd(0) catalyzed intramolecular cyclizations. Analogs of cyclopentanes, like isoxazoline-2-oxide and furan, with similar framework to the cyclopentanes act as anti-HIV and anticancer agents which opens a whole new field for application of these compounds. Starting from a meso-diol, optically pure compounds were prepared without utilizing chiral ligands at any stage of the synthesis. The stereochemical outcome of the product (>99% ee) was influenced by desymmetrization catalyzed by Pseudomonas cepacia lipase and the stereo selective nature of the palladium catalyzed transformations.

Urban Elementary And Middle School Teachers' Perceptions Of Instructional Time, Resources And Facilities And Their Relationship To Student Academic Achievement Reading And Mathematics, Rosalind Renee Martin Mrs.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Federal and state laws rely on multiple indicators to measure and improve student performance. However, inadequate attention has been directed at school climate as a means to improve student academic achievement even through there is a diverse body of research linking school climate to student achievement and academic performance (Kober, 2001; Loukas & Robinson, 2005; Shindler, et al 2004). The specific purpose of this study is to examine elementary and middle school teachers' perceptions of school climate dimensions such as: use of instructional time, access to resources, and adequate facilities, in relationship to students academic achievement in an urban school …

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock Nov 2012

Effects Of Corticosterone And Food Supplementation On Begging Behavior In Nestling Florida Scrub-Jays (Aphelocoma Coerulescens), Emily K. Elderbrock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In birds, altricial young depend upon adults for food and protection during the first few weeks of life. Begging is hypothesized to communicate an honest signal of a nestling's nutritional needs. I investigated two factors that may influence rate and duration of begging: 1) a nestling's corticosterone (CORT) levels, and 2) food availability. I examined the role of CORT in Florida scrub-jay nestlings through manipulation of CORT levels on days 8-11 post-hatch. I studied the role of food availability by indirectly supplementing all nestlings within a brood through their parents. I quantified nestling and adult behaviors using high definition video. …

Writing To Understand Our Lives And Languages: A Case Study Of An Immigrant Women's Writing Group, Jessica D. Swan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Writing groups have empirical support for their ability to give voice to stories, improve language skills, and result in personal and social transformations. However, the research into their effectiveness among English Language Learners (ELLs) is limited. This case study of an immigrant women's writing group in Memphis, Tennessee, examined the effects of participation on the language skills, identities, and communities of the women. Ten (10) women who were all non-native English speakers participated in a writing group held over the course of ten (10) weeks for two (2) hours each week. The structure of the writing group allowed for personal …

An Intelligent Network Of Sensors For Border And Perimeter Security, William E. White Iii Nov 2012

An Intelligent Network Of Sensors For Border And Perimeter Security, William E. White Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Border and perimeter security is a constant concern to many government and private entities. Large, often remote, areas must be constantly monitored for intruders or suspicious activity. This work investigates whether a wireless sensor network of intelligent nodes can provide the infrastructure needed to such applications. First a real time automated algorithm is developed for an existing profiling sensor. Results show that this automation produces reliable results on a limited dataset. To provide a more versatile, easier to deploy solution, a wireless sensor network is designed for deployment in a sensor field test bed located at Meeman-Shelby Forest. The wireless …

Prosody And Kinesics Based Co-Analysis Towards Continuous Gesture Recognition, Pratiksha Subedi Nov 2012

Prosody And Kinesics Based Co-Analysis Towards Continuous Gesture Recognition, Pratiksha Subedi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The aim of this study is to develop a multimodal co-analysis framework for continuous gesture recognition by exploiting prosodic and kinesics manifestation of natural communication. Using this framework, a co-analysis pattern between correlating components is obtained. The co-analysis pattern is clustered using K-means clustering to determine how well the pattern distinguishes the gestures. Features of the proposed approach that differentiate it from the other models are its less susceptibility to idiosyncrasies, its scalability, and simplicity. The experiment was performed on Multimodal Annotated Gesture Corpus (MAGEC) that we created for research on understanding non-verbal communication community, particularly the gestures.

Geologic Mapping Of The Macon And Moscow Se 7.5-Minute Quadrangles With Sedimentological And Petrological Analysis Of The Memphis Sand, Candice Fawn Brock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Detailed geologic mapping of two 7.5-minute quadrangles in Fayette County, Tennesse, and sedimentological analysis of obtained samples of the Eocene Memphis Sand have been performed to assess the locations of Memphis Sand outcrops, whether the facies are stratigraphically continuous in the outcrop region, the depositional characteristics and sediment source of the Memphis Sand, and what can be inferred about direct recharge into the Memphis aquifer. The Memphis Sand is a fluvial sand with mixed a mixed sediment source that can be separated into the upper, middle, and lower informal members. Direct recharge potential for the Memphis aquifer is limited spatially …

Data Acquisition From Cemetery Headstones, Cameron Smith Christiansen Nov 2012

Data Acquisition From Cemetery Headstones, Cameron Smith Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

Data extraction from engraved text is discussed rarely, and nothing in the open literature discusses data extraction from cemetery headstones. Headstone images present unique challenges such as engraved or embossed characters (causing inner-character shadows), low contrast with the background, and significant noise due to inconsistent stone texture and weathering. Current systems for extracting text from outdoor environments (billboards, signs, etc.) make assumptions (i.e. clean and/or consistently-textured background and text) that fail when applied to the domain of engraved text. Additionally, the ability to extract the data found on headstones is of great historical value. This thesis describes a novel and …
